Using step-by-step instructions, clearly written scripts, and expert tips to ease the way, author Larry Ullman discusses PHP and MySQL separately before going on to cover security, sessions and cookies, and using additional Web tools, with several sections devoted to creating sample applications. A companion Web site includes source code and demonstrations of techniques used in the volume. If you're already at home with HTML, you'll find this volume the perfect launching pad to creating dynamic sites with PHP and MySQL.

    A decent into book

This book manages to impart the essentials pretty clearly but don't expect to learn many of the details you will need to write real code.

The best book to learn from

I must admit, that when I first started using Larry's books (I purchased them all), I was very intimidated. With patience and GUIDANCE from Larry, I am finding that working with MySQL and PHP is written very well. It provides detailed explanations and visuals. Larry is the type of teacher that a student should love to hate. He makes you want to learn and research your efforts. PHP and MySQL is the book to purchase if you want to expand your knowledge of dynamic websites.

One of the best INTRO books I've seen

I am by no means a computer Guru. I have previously written a couple of simple HTML pages in the past. This book enabled me to begin working with PHP and MySQL. The book is well layed out and the examples are very clear. The book employs a learn by doing approach. I enjoyed the book so much that I recommended it to the IT professor at San Francisco State University (if only all college textbooks were this clear and affordable)! If you've never worked with PHP or MySQL before, get this book. If you plan to set up a php/MySQL server from scratch, you may need extra help beyond this book. Otherwise, this book is great!
