Although numerous herbal books are available for both the consumer and the healthcare practitioner, this is the one that every medical library, pharmacist, physician, and healthcare student must have because of its accuracy, objectiveness, and comprehensiveness. The physicians contributing to the text have grouped data about herbs into 15 categories, giving scientific information for almost 1000 herbal products and dietary supplements used in the United States and Canada. In addition to providing the facts available in other herbals (e.g., PDR for Herbal Medicines, Complete German Commission E Monographs), this book grades the effectiveness and safety of the products. There is also hard-to-find information on lab tests, diseases, known and possible interactions with foods (e.g., grapefruit juice), and what many brand-name products contain. The entire text is supported by 8,204 references. Libraries will also need access to the web site, www.NaturalDatabase.com, which is updated daily and easy to navigate; some of the references have links to Medline records. The only flaw is that Boolean searching is not available. Although this book is geared to health practitioners, the consumer who wants up-to-date, accurate data will also find it useful.
