From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble ReviewCan you believe it's been 10 years since the first edition of Oracle: The Complete Reference? In that decade, Oracle database administrators and developers worldwide have come to recognize Kevin Loney's book as the most authoritative, thorough Oracle resource out there. With Oracle 8i: The Complete Reference (and some help from new co-author and ex-Oracle bigwig George Koch), he's made this anniversary edition even more useful than ever.
Nearly 1400 pages strong (with a somewhat lighter, fully-searchable version on CD-ROM), this new edition contains comprehensive new coverage of web development with Oracle 8i — and especially Oracle's beefed-up Java support. There are detailed chapters on multi-platform and web-enabled database development with JDBC and SQLJ; on Java stored procedures; and on Enterprise JavaBeans. Loney also takes a close look at the architectural issues associated with web development — and also provides a new, quick-access "Hitchhiker's Guide" to WebDB.
You'll find exhaustive coverage of database administration: backup/restore, security, recoverability, availability, and more. There are thorough introductions to SQL, PL/SQL, and SQL*PLUS; and to Oracle's key tools for developers, such as the data dictionary and optimizer. Of course, Loney and Koch recognize there's more to performance than automated tools, so they present three full chapters on designing for performance — including Ten Commandments of Humane Design.
The book has been thoroughly updated for Oracle8i,but since many folks are still using Oracle 8.0 or even 7.x, much of that coverage remains. (Worry not: you can move amongst Oracle shops without your book becoming irrelevant!)
