I bought this book on the strength of the lead author's previous book on DTS. I have to say I'm somewhat disappointed. SSIS has become a teriffically more complicated albeit more powerful tool than DTS. Unfortunately, the way Wrox has chosen to deal with this complexity is by 'throwing more authors' at the subject. There are some great individual sections but on the whole this doesn't make up for the book's short-comings. There are key pieces of information that are flat out 'missing' (like the ProtectionLevel property of a package). For myself, I buy a book like this to find out as quickly as possible 'how to use the product'. I'm not especially interested in 'Software Development Life Cycles: A Brief History' - one of several sections in this book that should have been cut.

I found the content to be well-founded for professionals looking to get into SQL 2005 Integration Services (SSIS) for the first time. There was a fair amount of mention of previous SQL 2000 DTS, which was, in large, unnecessary. However, the Wrox Press methods of explaining and then demonstrating were as solid as ever. You'll find the mini-projects to be helpful, whether you are reading through or actually performing them. All things considered, this is a strong reference in my library.
