"The future executive faces a business world overloaded with
information and a need to separate the important from the trivial in
problems involving uncertainty. Statistical concepts help the manager
develop skills in summarizing information, interpreting data, formulating
decision problems in quantitative terms, explaining complex matters by
employing simple and useful models, and using quantitative results
effectively."

"[Individuals are] expected to have a strong grasp of
fundamental techniques of data analysis built upon a background of basic
methodological knowledge. Beyond the strictly statistical foundation, the
masters level biostatistician must have a solid understanding of
epidemiological concepts and methods, including study designs important to
the epidemiologist, and an ability to explain statistical methods and
interpret analytical results to the non-statistician. Program resources at
UIC include an Infectious Disease Laboratory and an Instructional Computer
Laboratory that serves as a remote terminal room to the UIC Computer Center
with a variety of terminals, microcomputers, and a
printer."

both theoretical and applied statistics, as well as in probability theory.
Major strengths include robust statistics, multivariate analysis, decision
theory, sequential inference, stochastic processes, and probability limit
theory. Especially noteworthy is current applied and cross-disciplinary
research in educational statistics, economics, environmental and
epidemiological statistics, ranking data, and statistical analysis of
social networks. The Department enjoys a high level of grant and contract
support from the National Science Foundation, the National Security, the
Environmental Protection Agency (through the National Institute of
Statistical Sciences), the Law School Admission Council and the Educational
Testing Service."

"The essence of the Quantitative Division of the Psychology
Department is a highly integrated and flexible program of research and
instruction . . . we seek to teach experimental design . . . so that the
data collected are closely tied to substantive questions giving rise to
experimentation. Toward this end, students are encouraged to develop their
own substantive interests through course work in other areas, while
applying methodology learned in our program to substantive
issues."
