"The department offers programs of study leading to the degrees of Master of Science (with or without a thesis) and Doctor of Philosophy. All graduate students are required to take courses in each of the three basic areas of statistical inference, probability and stochastic processes, and linear models and design. The Ph.D. program also includes course work in advanced inference and probability and in other selected areas, according to the student's needs and goals. The Ph.D. degree prepares the student for university teaching and research, as well as consulting and research roles in industry and government, and usually requires four to five years of study."
