"The Department of Experimental Statistics is the principal
source of statistical education, research, and service at Louisiana State
University. The department is unique in its strong orientation toward the
application of statistics. Faculty provide expert statistical support for
the University community. Faculty also routinely serve on graduate
committees in other departments and collaborate on interdisciplinary
research projects, in addition to directing graduate students in statistics
and conducting independent research programs. The department has
approximately 30 master's-level graduate students, who interact closely
with the faculty."

"The Department of Biometry and Genetics offers a graduate
program leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees
in biometry. The major objective of the program is to provide a formal
mechanism for training biometricians who will be able to work as
statisticians in the general biomedical field, acting as consultants and
performing original research in biostatistical methodology. The program
provides a balance between theory and application, including computer
usage, and offers a broad range of alternatives to accommodate individual
goals."

"Biostatistics and epidemiology are complementary
disciplines for the understanding of risk factors for disease in human
populations. Epidemiology provides scientific design for the collection of
data appropriate to a problem; biostatistics offers techniques to determine
in a mathematical way whether the observations are of importance. Both are
central to all research in the medical sciences. While these two
disciplines are housed in the same department, individual programs are
offered in biostatistics and epidemiology."
