"Biostatistics and epidemiology are complementary disciplines for the understanding of risk factors for disease in human populations. Epidemiology provides scientific design for the collection of data appropriate to a problem; biostatistics offers techniques to determine in a mathematical way whether the observations are of importance. Both are central to all research in the medical sciences. While these two disciplines are housed in the same department, individual programs are offered in biostatistics and epidemiology."
