of the field, but also how to apply statistical methods to a variety of
subject areas such as business administration, computer science, economics,
engineering, psychology, and the biological, physical, and social sciences
. . . Not only will students receive a thorough understanding of the theory
and application of statistical methods, but they will receive hands-on
experience in the analysis of real-life data."

"Oakland's graduate programs (M.S. and Ph.D.) and graduate
certificate program in applied statistics emphasizes the applications of
statistical methods in industry. The M.S. and Ph.D. programs are designed
to produce applied statisticians who are capable of creating applications
of high level mathematics and statistics to solve industrial problems and
meet the new challenges of U.S. industry. A limited number of OU-Ford Coop
scholarships may be available every year. These coops are expected to work
120 days in a year on-site at Ford Motor Company and gain the real world
experience in applying statistical tools in industrial problems. Award of
these scholarships is very competitive and the final selection is made in
consultation with Ford Motor Company. The graduate certificate program,
consisting of 20 credits is targeted towards practicing engineers and other
personnel to provide them the basic working knowledge of modern statistical
methods. Some of these credits can be counted towards an M.S. degree if one
later decides to obtain one."

"Graduate study in Biostatistics prepares students for
careers in the application of statistics and mathematical methods to the
design and analysis of health research and biomedical studies and to the
planning and evaluation of health services programs. Career opportunities
are usually found in governmental agencies, in private industries, in
medical research institutions, and in universities. A doctoral degree in
Biostatistics also prepares students for teaching positions in a university
setting. Demand for Biostatistics graduates remains high, partly because of
a continued emphasis on research and evaluation with regard to programs in
medical care, drug therapy, health maintenance, and environmental
control."
