"The requirements for a major in mathematics reflect the
department's basic concern for flexibility. The major has a common core of
five courses -- four terms of calculus and linear algebra and one in
foundations. Students complete their major by choosing six or more
additional upper division courses from a wide variety of offerings,
enabling them to get a broad mathematical background."
