"The M.S. program in Statistics has two tracks: the
statistics track and the stochastic modeling track. It provides students
with the foundations in theory and practice required for careers in
quantitative analysis and stochastic modeling. The Ph.D. programs (Ph.D. in
Applied Mathematics or Ph.D. in Mathematics with a concentration in
statistics/probability) provide comprehensive and balanced training in
statistical/stochastic methods and statistical/probabilistic theory. The
goal of the doctoral program is to train creative, fully independent
investigators who can initiate research in both applied and theoretical
statistics/probability. Students in the program have direct high-speed
access to a variety of computers and workstations on
campus."

"As a discipline, management science is concerned with the
development of conceptual frameworks and quantitative techniques that can
be applied to the structuring and solving of problems that arise in complex
organizational systems. Management science is based on the belief that
important aspects of reality can be effectively and usefully modeled and
analyzed in terms of functional relations among variables. The Department
of Management Science is responsible for all courses in quantitative
business analysis and operations management."

"Our M.S. program in statistics is designed to provide
students with a solid foundation in the fundamentals of statistical theory
and its applications, preparing them for careers as statisticians in
industry or business. Our Ph.D. program expands upon the theoretical and
applied foundations acquired at the masters level by providing more
rigorous training in theory, methods and applications of statistics. With
its strength in traditional as well as newer emerging areas, the Ph.D.
program prepares students for careers as statisticians or biostatisticians
in a university, industrial, or governmental setting. A special feature of
this program has been the availability of a fair number of student
internships at local pharmaceutical companies, which frequently evolve into
careers in biostatistical areas."

"The Statistics Department at the Wharton School has sixteen
faculty and about the same number of PhD students, with four new students
admitted each year. Our department is unusual in that it is housed within
the Wharton School, one of the nation's leading business schools, wheras
most statistics departments are housed within schools of arts and sciences.
Students in our department may focus their studies on traditional topics
within statistics or they may link their studies with other business
disciplines, such as finance, operations management, or
marketing."

"The Applied Statistics program seeks to provide theoretical
foundations and practical applications of topics in statistics. The
requirement for a student to earn the degree of Master of Science in
Applied Statistics is to complete 30 credits as outlined below, and to pass
the written Comprehensive Examination. Since the program also recognizes
the interplay of statistics and computer science, it should be noted that
some of the electives available to students may be chosen from the Computer
Science program as well. Applicants for the program must hold a bachelor's
degree and must have completed undergraduate course work in mathematics
through multivariate calculus and linear algebra."
