"The M.S. program in Statistics has two tracks: the statistics track and the stochastic modeling track. It provides students with the foundations in theory and practice required for careers in quantitative analysis and stochastic modeling. The Ph.D. programs (Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics or Ph.D. in Mathematics with a concentration in statistics/probability) provide comprehensive and balanced training in statistical/stochastic methods and statistical/probabilistic theory. The goal of the doctoral program is to train creative, fully independent investigators who can initiate research in both applied and theoretical statistics/probability. Students in the program have direct high-speed access to a variety of computers and workstations on campus."

"Our M.S. program in statistics is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the fundamentals of statistical theory and its applications, preparing them for careers as statisticians in industry or business. Our Ph.D. program expands upon the theoretical and applied foundations acquired at the masters level by providing more rigorous training in theory, methods and applications of statistics. With its strength in traditional as well as newer emerging areas, the Ph.D. program prepares students for careers as statisticians or biostatisticians in a university, industrial, or governmental setting. A special feature of this program has been the availability of a fair number of student internships at local pharmaceutical companies, which frequently evolve into careers in biostatistical areas."

The requirement for a student to earn the degree of Master of Science in Applied Statistics is to complete 30 credits as outlined below, and to pass the written Comprehensive Examination. Since the program also recognizes the interplay of statistics and computer science, it should be noted that some of the electives available to students may be chosen from the Computer Science program as well. Applicants for the program must hold a bachelor's degree and must have completed undergraduate course work in mathematics through multivariate calculus and linear algebra."
