Advanced Internet Requests Process

DRAFT - Not for Public Distribution

Send Comments to Brian Yandell, Editor, Amstat Online

This process serves tasks and requests that require substantial design work from ASA staff, particularly those on the IS team. The intent is for all to learn and understand the size and costs of each task, and to monitor the planning, development, and refinement of ASA products. For example, a request for interactive report web pages requires substantial time commitments, even though the task may appear simple from the outset. The aim is to work as a team, composed of ASA staff and members, to accomplish each task.

Idea

  • Prepare visual mock-up with focus on content & functionality (no mechanics)
  • Review and approval by ASA sponsoring unit (e.g. COCGB, an ASA section, ASA Committee on Committees, etc., or even an administrative team from ASA staff)
  • Working group with three members (idea person + two web-knowledgeable persons) appointed by ASA sponsoring unit working with the Amstat Online (AO) Editor and appropriate Associate Editor (AE).
  • Establish a Forum for discussions by the sponsoring unit on an ASA Bulletin Board.

Development

  • Copies of idea to IS Manager, AO Editor, appropriate AO AE, ASA Director of Programs, WebMaster and ASA Director of Operations.
  • IS development plan, time line and cost estimates established.
  • Approval of plan and cost estimates by ASA sponsoring unit, and by any other appropriate ASA administrative segment as needed.
  • System prototyped on development server and reviewed by working group.
  • Conference call(s) (maximum of three for most applications) to make minor modifications and determine if/what major modifications are needed.
  • Those participating in the conference call are the working group, and ASA staff and AO editorial representatives as appropriate.
  • Revisit cost estimates and time lines based on outcome of conference call, obtaining approvals if necessary.
  • Report to ASA sponsoring unit, copy to AO Editor and ASA Director of Programs after each call.

Complete Task

  • Obtain final approval of the product from the ASA sponsoring unit.
  • Obtain final approval of the AO Editorial Board (AOEB)
  • Move product to production server and test functionality.
  • Put appropriate links and notifications on web pages.
  • Construct a news release for AO.
