I will be teaching a course in Spring 2001 on "Statistical Genomics" as Stat 692 (tue/thu 11-12:15). My hope is to have a rich mixture of students from biological and quantitative sciences, much as I had for the reading course in Fall 1998. Prerequisites include at least one year of statistics (e.g. Stat 571-572) and one semester of genetics (e.g. Gen 466), or consent of instructor. Students will bring their skills and experience, and stretch beyond their level by working in teams on collaborative projects. There will be a mix of theory, computation, and practical experience with both simulated and real data.

The focus of this course is on statistical inference and data analysis for quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and gene expression microarrays. I will draw on recent literature and research experience with controlled experiments in plant and animal studies. Emphasis will be on understanding concepts, features and limitations of existing methods. Students interested in theory can delve there, while others interested in practical use or implementation can focus on those aspects. Material will include both "classical" and Bayesian approaches to these problems.

Depending on student interest, and on overlap with other courses, I might include some pedigree analysis issues appropriate to outbred and natural populations (e.g. humans and other large mammals). However, that could easily be another whole course.

Reading for this course will come from the following:

    Required

  1. ZB Zeng (2000) Unpublished Course Notes on QTLs.
  2. Recent and key articles, both published and in preprint form.

    Recommended

  3. M Lynch and B Walsh (1997) Fundamentals of Quantitative Genetics. Sinauer Associates.
