Paper Reviews and Class Participation

An important skill for computer architecture researchers is the ability to read and comprehend research papers in the field. To develop this skill and facilitate high-quality discussion during lecture, each lecture at least one paper will be assigned that students are expected to read and write a review for before attending class. Reviews are due by 9am the morning of the lecture for which the paper is assigned. You are encouraged to discuss the papers in groups, but you must submit your own review electronically to the dropboxes on Canvas. Late reviews will not be accepted and the time is based on when the email is submitted in Canvas.

It is possible that the review schedule (on the Course Schedule) will change somewhat, and, if so, I will send email a few days in advance.

Review Format

The ASCII body of the submission (text file; NOT HTML or PDF) should be 20 to 40 lines (maximum 3200 characters) with:

  • a short paragraph summarizing the problem attacked or goal of the paper,
  • a short paragraph summarizing the paper's methods (if any) and results, and
  • a short paragraph giving your opinion of what is good and bad about the paper.

Reviews will be graded on a scale of Excellent (10 points), Satisfactory (7 points), and Unsatisfactory (3 points). Reviews that are too long will automatically receive an Unsatisfactory grade. Reviews will be graded by sampling rather than grading each review turned in. The purpose here is to get students to read (and discuss) papers before they are discussed in class.
