ROC OFFICIAL SEES NO US PRESSURE OVER CROSS-STRAIT TIES

    Taipei,  Aug.  24  (CNA)  Mainland  Affairs  Council  (MAC)  Vice
Chairman  Lin  Chong-pin on Tuesday refused to confirm whether the US
government has dispatched a delegation to Taiwan.
    But  he  said  that if such a delegation were to visit Taipei, it
would  not  be for the purpose of putting pressure on Taiwan over the
development of cross-Taiwan Strait relations.
    It  is  understood  that  a US official delegation has arrived in
Taipei  to discuss security issues, but its level is though to be not
as high as reported by some local newspapers.
    Since President Lee Teng-hui redefined Taiwan-mainland China ties
as  a  "special  state-to-state  relationship" on July 9, Beijing has
been  pressing  Lee  to  retract his statement, and the international
community has been following the situation closely.
    According  to  Lin,  the  reactions  to  Lee's statement from the
international  community  have now become more favorable than before,
and  the  US  government  has  reiterated  its  policy  of  seeking a
resolution of cross-strait issues through peaceful means.

POPE APPOINTS NEW CHARGE D'AFFAIRES TO ROC

    Rome,  Aug.  24 (CNA) Pope John Paul II announced Thursday that
Adolofo  Tito  Yllana has been appointed Holy See's Charge d'affaires
a.i.  to the Republic of China.
    Rev.  Monsignor  Joseph  Chennoth,  the  outgoing Holy See Charge
d'affaires  to  the  ROC  has  been  named  Ambassador to the Central
African Republic and Chad.
    Holy  See  Deputy  Secretary  Giovanni  Battista informed the ROC
Ambassador  to  the  Holy  See,  Raymond Tai  of Yllana' appointment.
    The  appointment  of  Yllana  by  the  Pope was not unexpected as
Yllana  had been sent to Taiwan by the Vatican in July to perform the
duties as the counselor to the Embassy of the Holy See.
