Solaris Notes

This is a collection of reminders about things to take care of on Solaris system. If they are here it is likely that it is something I keep on forgetting and need to dig up again.

High Availability Commands

Sun introduced high availablity with automatic fail-over, hot-swappable hardware of all kinds. The only problem is... how to you hot swap the hardware? You need to tell the kernel to stop using the hardware. You need to power it off to hot swap it. You need to power-on and diagnose the new hardware. Then you need to tell the OS that it is there and so it can start using it.

With all this going on, solaris introduced a slew of commands to let you take care of this wealth. It also makes administering the box just a wee bit more complex than it used to be when you add new hardware in. All these tools allow you to add/remove and/or configure/unconfigure hardware, adjust settings in DBs, etc.

The other issue with high availability is that you want to be able to have the system always do the same thing, and to restart things that die and to monitor them. IBM has been doing this for decades with VM and the various 370 OS's, so Sun needed to do a better job of taking care of their system as a system instead of a bunch of sorta-related things:
