In mid-summer 2006 I visited Prague in the Czech Republic. I am staying for an all too short 10 days. The tenses in here may be confusing because I am writing it from Prague. Some already happened, I am still doing things, etc.
I was fortunate to book a flight from my home airport of MSN (Madison WI) to my destination of PRG (Prague Rusnye). The alternatives were to ride the Alco bus to/from Chicago, which is a 6 hour time loss each way. Chicago, O-Hare is also a mess, and I think it is best to avoid travelling through there if you want a good trip.
My flight was from MSN to DTW (Detroit, US) to AMS (Amsterdam, NL) to PRG (Prague, CZ). The timing worked well, mostly. I departed MSN at 1024, arrived DTW 1224 (time zone switch). There was a three hour stop-over in DTW. This worked well. The DTW airport has improved considerably since the last time I visited. It was a nice place to hang out, eat, look at technology and other random items.
The flight from DTW departed at 1645, and arrived AMS 0555. The AMS airport is quite nice, although it was almost completely closed down when I arrived. The advantage of this is that there were no ATC delays, or delays at the airport itself.
The flight from AMS departed 1:30 later, and arrived PRG at 0845. Again, these early morning flights worked well, no delays, and the passenger count was low so getting through passport and customes was fast.
The only disadvantage of this flight timing is that I wasn't able to sleep on the aircraft, and arrived at PRG at 0100 bolo-time, with a full day ahead of me! Ouch! I was zombie-fied for several hours. If I had slept on the flight, I think it would have worked out better.
