Getting here
The Bangor Airport (BGR) is 1.5 hours north of Camden, while the
Portland Jetport (PWM) is about 2 hours to the south. Lately, flying
into Bangor has tended to be a bit cheaper. There are no busses or taxis
that can get you to Camden from any of the airports (as far as we know),
and there is no public transportation in Camden,
so it will be necessary to rent a car. You can take the lovely Coastal
Route 1 for a scenic drive from either city, or for a possibly quicker
trip from Portland during tourist season, I95 north to Augusta and then
east on 17. (Don't worry about tourists if you're coming from Bangor.)
If you're up for a more extensive tour of New England, other airports
you might consider are Boston's Logan Airport (BOS) or Manchester, New
Hampshire (MHT). Boston is about a three and a half hour drive to Camden,
but the plane tickets will be cheaper. If you'd like to try and land as close
to Camden as possible, you can try the tiny airport in Rockland (RKD). It's a
little more expensive and requires two connections, but you get to land in a
field!
Hotels
A selection of rooms and cottages are reserved at Glenmoor by the Sea
(mention the Leather/Engle wedding when making your reservation). These rooms will be guaranteed until April 15th.
Other hotels nearby are the Country Inn
and the Samoset Resort. And of course there are many
lovely bed and breakfasts in and around
Camden.
Tips
It will be tourist season in Maine. We strongly recommend making reservations early!
Some favorite web sites for finding flight deals (they do rental cars
too) are Orbitz, Expedia, and if
you're a teacher or student, Student Universe sometimes has a deal.
For the Midwestern 18-25 crowd, we highly recommend coordinating
groups for car rentals and hotels to keep costs manageable. There are
only so many flights into Bangor (especially from the Midwest) on a
given day, so you'll probably all be arriving at one of two general
times, making car coordination easier. Glenmoor by the Sea will be a
your best bet for a hotel deal (it's right on the ocean too!),
and they have both rooms and cottages.
