UWM provides dial-in
internet service. All UWM students can use free internet
service.
The network connection support at UWM is simulated with the
Slirp program, and is NOT a true SLIP/PPP network connection. You do
not receive your own IP number when you connect, but rather share the
Alpha's network connection. While this connection allows basic Web
browser functions such as "telnet" and “ftp”, other
programs that require IP numbers or specific "ports" may not
work.
This includes many Internet Phone programs, some chat
programs/functions, some "plugins" for streaming
audio/video, and others as well. To use these types of programs, you
would need to purchase a "real" network connection from a
commercial Internet service provider
To setup
the UWM Slirp program ,
You can download
Disk1.exe
(1.3M)
Disk2.exe
(1.2M)
You can check out a WinSlirp CD-ROM from
Golda Meir Library,
East Wing Entrance,
First Floor Reserve Desk
Or you can obtain a copy of Slirp
from the I&MT Help Desk.
Be sure to bring two blank, formatted, high density 3.5 inch disks
with you

Note
Slirp sometimes does not peacefully coexist with another Internet
Service Provider’s dial-up networking software when both are
installed concurrently on the same computer. This especially
holds true for AOL. If you run into conflicts while trying to
use Slirp and another ISP’s software on the same computer, you may
have to uninstall Slirp or the other ISP’s software as well as undo
the dial-up networking settings, then reinstall the software for
either Slirp or the ISP, depending on which one you want to use.
* UWM internet service supports
a modem speed up to 33.6k bps.
even though you have a 56k or higher modem , it will still
connect to 33.6k speed.
