Instructions:
1.OK, it all started with the Superflat show at the Walker Art Center last fall. I saw a piece mural piece of Karen Carpenter and race car driver Ayrton Senna by Niro Sugiyama, similar to this piece from Sugiyama's website:
I emulated Sugiyamas style with the help of Macromedia Flash. Started with my image (hair.jpg):
  • Import it into Flash ( File -> Import -> hair.jpg)
  • "flatten" the image with Trace Bitmap (Modify -> Trace Bitmap).
  • Took some tweeking to get the Trace Bitmap settings right. Result:
2. Saved the result by exporting the flat image as a JPG file (File -> Export Image)
3. After I had my initial image, I knew i wanted something to be blurred. I took an image from Vector Lounge, opened it in Photoshop and motion blurred(Filter->Blur->Motion Blur...) it.
The colors(reds) from the blurred image determined the color scheme for the piece.
4. Selective Logo Placment.
5. Used brushes i found on Surfstation (Thanks!) for my mountains and clouds and stuff behind my head.
6. Added a grid here and there.
7. Decided it really need a 3D element. Took a picture of a sign from my Chicago trip, rotated it and added lines and curves in Illustrator.
8. Only thing remaining was the text. Used the following fonts: Brooklyn Kid, Garamond, Lemuria and Verdana.
9. After messing around with layers and thier transparcencies I had my finished product.
