What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We have a great game and you have great ideas - Early access is a platform that allows us to put those things together so you can help Stranded Deep grow to it's full potential.

...As those ideas come together and evolve, there may be some hiccups, but we'll always be doing our best to make sure that Stranded Deep is a playable, enjoyable game. Early Access is getting a bad reputation lately and we'd like to help turn that around. This is a game made by gamers - Beam Team - not a faceless corporation. We care about the game and the people who play it.

See our roadmap below for more details on the great things to come!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We don't want to work on Stranded Deep forever. If all goes well, we're hoping to have it completed by the end of 2015.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We're using Early Access to add more content and balance game mechanics through community input. We would like to think of the full release as the conclusion to this process.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“This is Early Access and this is an early build.

All core mechanics for crafting, building and interacting are in place and functional. Players will be able to manage their character's vital system and accumulate resources. Every current object and item in the game has a purpose and functionality that we will no doubt have to balance as development continues.

The world is infinitely procedurally-generated and full of different biomes. Areas will not be incomplete or locked off; Instead, the biomes and world generation will evolve as development progresses.

There is no "end-game" yet, so players will not be able to "beat" the game or be rescued.

Optimization is an ongoing process. We've made many optimizations along the way and have incorporated comprehensive graphics options, but there's always more to do. We are confident in a stable performant build but this is never a guarantee.

We are very passionate developers and have put our heart and soul into Stranded Deep. We prefer not to give estimates of percentages or timelines for our development but we can be confident in saying that we're not releasing bug-ridden shovel-ware.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will remain the same during Early Access. After Early Access has finished, the final price will reflect the additional content added during development - but it won't be a big change.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will be releasing a public board that lists our progress, concepts and issues so players can see what's being addressed at the time and also that their feedback is being received and used positively.

We always read our feedback and take everyone's opinion seriously. Receiving player feedback is important so we can use it to improve and evolve. We will see it.”

UPDATE 0.16! DYNAMIC ISLAND BILLBOARDS AND MORE!

Hey everyone,

The latest stable build 0.16 has just been released!

This update features the new Dynamic Island Billboard system mentioned in the last update.

The new billboarding system is a very important system to check off and had some unique challenges along the way. A lot of the time in large open world games, the terrain or landmass itself does a good enough job of approximating areas in the distance. Trees and objects that fade in are hidden by mountains and/or aren’t very noticeable. With the smaller island design in Stranded Deep, islands are generally low-lying terrain with trees and objects sticking out from them like porcupines. It’s pretty noticeable if trees, or anything, pops in suddenly. The old pre-made island billboards weren’t cutting it either. A simple approach was to try and capture the bounds of the terrain to take a ‘snapshot’ of the island, but that was a no-go. Even though our island generator generates small central island landmasses, the potential landmass for an island is almost as large as the ‘zone’ itself. At that large size a single billboard’s resolution had to be unrealistically high for it to have enough precision to make out rendered objects. We experimented with a lot of other ideas, including splitting the island into ‘chunks’ for billboarding, but in the end we weren’t happy with the quality or level of compromise with traditional and other methods. In the end we created a lightweight proxy system, universal for all the islands. When leaving an island, a low detail representation is created. This representation is only updated when necessary based on distance and angle calculations. The end result is a lightweight and adequately accurate billboarding system with nice visual transitions for any island that gets loaded in. Initial ‘undiscovered’ islands will still pop in at first for now, but a new system to cover this scenario is coming in the next update.

Now that large game objects are visible from long distances, you will need to be conscious of your island designs when creating custom maps in the map editor. There’s a lot of custom islands where players are building islands out of large rocks, filling in areas with large amounts of trees, etc. The new billboarding system is very lightweight, but even so this will significantly decrease performance. Try to focus on smarter island designs - using the terrain to fill the gaps and occlude things instead of individual objects. In the future we’ll be putting in object and land-mass caps for the map editor to keep everything in check.

The next update will feature a new mechanic for island ‘discovery’ and also the new progressive loading - where loading in a new zone will be spread across multiple frames to lower the performance hit. It’s currently working experimentally and looks very promising. The new billboarding system was first priority as it masks the loading and positioning of objects over multiple frames with this new system.

We’ve also seen some reports of users with high-end NVIDIA cards getting very bad performance, so we’re looking into that as well.

Have fun :)

BUG FIXES
- Fixed “jetty” Building bug where very large or long constructions would billboard due to distance checks from player’s position.
- Fixed black artefacts popping on Terrain from third-party shadow system.
- Fixed Billboard lighting not updating every game hour.
- Fixed Sea Forts generating in incorrect positions.

CHANGES
- Significantly reduced overhead for individual Billboard initialization on new objects.

- Improved Volumetric Cloud performance in certain scenarios.
Volumetric Clouds now have an experimental option in the graphics settings. Turning on the Volumetric Cloud Occlusion option will enable the new temporal re-projection occlusion. Previously, the clouds couldn’t make use of traditional Z testing (where objects in front stop objects behind from being calculated unnecessarily) due to the how they are rendered. With the new option enabled, clouds that are occluded by other game objects are not calculated unnecessarily. A good example of this would be inside Shipwrecks and Sea Forts where no clouds are visible. There are pros and cons to this method as a mask needs to be rendered to calculate the occlusion, increasing draw calls. Without a mask the entire cloud volume on screen is calculated, increasing GPU load. Whether this option will increase performance for you will depend on your CPU vs GPU specs. It will increase performance for some systems and not for others.

- Adjusted Volumetric Cloud settings.
Previous ‘High’ setting was too performance hungry for very little visual benefit.

NEW CONTENT

- Added new Dynamic Island Billboard system!
Island billboards are now generated completely dynamically. Now when travelling in the world you will be able to see truer representations of the islands you’ve discovered, which not only helps with immersion but should help navigation. At this stage, there are no more generic island billboards visible for undiscovered islands. A new mechanic covering this is coming soon.

- Added new Draw Distance setting!
A Draw Distance graphics option has been implemented. This is only implemented for larger game models. The smaller-scale detail follower (grass, debris, etc) hasn’t been incorporated into the new draw distance settings yet.

- Added new LOD’s.
We’ve created a lot of lower level LOD’s for various items including Shipwrecks and Sea Forts. This should help with performance, now that a lot of objects are visible from longer distances.

DEV NOTES
- Removed third-party shadow system and reverted to Unity’s built-in Shadows.
- Patched to Unity 5.4.0p4

This game is basically an elaborate scam, riding on the bandwagon of open world survival games. After twenty minutes you've experienced everything it has to offer, and the cosmetic "updates" it receives are few and far in between. No meaningful development has taken place in well over a year. There is NOTHING to do except run around, pick stuff up and craft one of the dozen items that have no real meaning or impact on the sorry excuse for gameplay.

And for all of the apologists who'll inevitably swarm me with the one and only argument they've got (OMG COME ON IT'S EARLY ACCES DUDE!!!11) I have exactly two words: Screw. You. Releasing an early access game is a commitment and a responsibility, not an excuse to take people's money and give them a stagnant tech demo that offers about as much interactivity, content, variety and replay value as 3DMark.

It's deader than disco and everyone except the fanboys knows it. The devs best of all.

This is a cool game, for a decent price, that could really benefit from other things, but is otherwise good.
You are Robinson Crusoe. You are stranded. And yet, you are also in big trouble. There has been no great disaster. No evil corporation is making you survive. It's just a plain old plane crash. And you start with just your wits and your will. And you make of it what you will and what you want. Do you want to focus on food? Shelter? Water? Hey, whatever keeps you going.
Some people do level a real criticism, that this game has a very short life each time you start a new game. And that is true in a few senses. You can't play with friends, so there is no wonder of cooperation. There is now no end goal, no map of shipping lanes, or larger islands, or signal flares (for actual signaling rather than for shark fighting.) But the semi-random nature of the game means that you can either try again in the same place, or start over in a new place. There are new things to discover each time. There are amazing places to explore each time. And while you lack the end goal that gives you the determination to survive in a real scenario, there is something relaxing about searching for food and water on a tropical island, with nothing to do except to keep yourself fed and happy. Oh wait, there is one thing that makes it less relaxing and gives the game tension and purpose...
Sharks. Dear Lord, the sharks. Jesus Tap-dancing H. Christ the sharks. Seriously, this game makes you want to drag every shark out of the water and punch it to death before it succumbs to hypoxia. This game makes you want to test the gender of sharks by taking every coconut you drink and shoving it up their cloaca. These game designers either go to sleep with the schadenfreude of every player's struggles against and terror of sharks, or they have USS Indianapolis survivor's level hatred of the things and want to share it with the world. I play this game and feel like each time I find a shark on one island, it seriously follows me from island to island... hunting... stalking... waiting... ignoring all the other fish. I have gone on huge, multi-island runs just to try and lose the sharks on my tail. That is fun in its own way, but seriously, I am running out of gods to pray to to keep the blood-thirsty demons of the deep away.
In short, this game is worth the quarter of the price of a AAA game to play. Buy it. Play it. Punch a shark for me.

I bought this game last year played it for about 30 minutes and never touched it again. For reasons unknown l decided to try it out again and found my experience this time around much better, the crafting has a menu now and it is less buggy overall. If co op ever comes out it will make my dreams come true. For a single player survival game is it fairly fun (l really liked stranded 2 so l'm biased) and this feels like a better graphic version of stranded 2.

You guys really aren't saving the reputation of early access at all. In fact quite the opposite.

So after many updates I am rewriting my review its went from good to bad and now back to good. Yes, there are a few bugs here and there but great news is the actual game play is great. I recommend for people who liked the movie cast away and for those who enjoy thrilling island and ocean life. This game is beautiful and exciting!

My first two hours of Stranded Deep was amazing...the world was immersive and beautiful, I already lost myself in the virtual sunsets. But I've read recent reviews of this game...and it is stated to be boring and lack of content, but I think this game deserves to pull the "Still in Early-Access" excuse. The content and visual effects are splendid and above-average in the Early-Access stage, and it is still being updated constantly.

I've also read about this game long before I got it, and I even watched many videos...it seems the hype is gone now though. This game might die, or it could be extremely successful. The content so far, in this stage of development, is spectacular, and I really think *more people should try this game*.

*TL;DR:*

Though the hype for Stranded Deep is mostly gone, the game is still constantly updating and new content is being released on a monthly basis, this game is totally worth a shot (c'mon, it's only $15).

8/10 BEAUTIFUL GAME!!
But cant really run on a non-gaming computer (a.k.a a potato computer)
not really much to it yet (cause its early accses)
personally I would wait until the game is fully relised (If ur not sure about paying the money!)
and if you like playing with a buddy I would also recommend waiting till its full release verson (Cause they 'might' add multiplayer)
AND IF YOU DONT LIKE SHARKS DONT PLAY THIS GAME!!! ;)
I would recommend this game if you like a PG verson of The Forest!
Overall a great game for the light hearted adventure gamers out there and in my opinon kinda worth the money!!

Killed a shark, boar and speared the crap out of a seagull!
Made a smoker and water extractors (forogt the name)
Crafted a Barbie Doll house which is called Shelter.. fits my head only.
Explored lots with my custom built raft, crafted a boat motor and left my home island since Ive hoareded every single item in the game x3.
Took off with my jet raft and felt completed, felt like ive done everything so sadly giving up.

This game is dead, uninteresting, tedious (even for a crafting game), and sails on the "early access" excuse in order to drown out legitimate complaints about lack of development. After 75 mins of play, I said "&%$# this".

Overall, i like the feeling of this games. Honestly, after a few years of dealing with it i've got to say.....thank GOD there are no zombies or mutants in this game. I wouldn't mind, eventually, some AI's like natives but not all "agressive" ones.

I love the graphics and i love, even more, the fact that my I7 (office) machine can get away with playing it (on a decent graphics setting) with just a 1GB video card and it doesn't drag....nice.:)

There are some things i would change but i'm going to keep that to myself because, usually, other people are thinking what i am thinking and voice it before me, hence allowing me to avoid any fire if there's something i may not like. I have come to learn that "some" individuals (in this group) can't take constructive criticism without flipping out so i just leave it alone now unless it's so bad that it's impossible to let it go.

Actually, this game has a lot of promise. I've been waiting for a deset island survival game. I would like more control of the time (like in 7 days to die) but that's just a suggestion.

I eagerly await the new update to where the fishing traps come back to the game :)
