What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Cosmic Trip is all about exploring what it means to be an RTS game in Room-Scale VR (HTC Vive). This is an uncharted and exciting territory and we want to build a community of players with RTS expertise to help us define what a native VR RTS experience should be. Playing games in VR is a hugely unique and personal experience, so having everyone share us their thoughts and feedback will help guide our development as we continue towards our official 1.0 release.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Currently, we do not have an expected full release date, hoping to enlist the community to help guide our development. Currently estimated to be about a half year of EA development until the full release.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The development will be guided by the community, but the general list of features will be:

  • More biomes and areas
  • More enemies types to battle against
  • More cosmobot types to build
  • More tools and weapons to use
  • More buildings, structures, turrets
  • Metagame progression (upgrades, etc)
  • Perhaps even a groovy intergalatic spaceship as home-base?

These priorities and features are all likely to change as we bring in feedback from the community!”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The early access version includes a full playable wave-based mode to give the player a sense of what the feel of full experience would be. The RTS style game-mode will be deployed for testing soon.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We set the price of the early access cheaper than our planned full-released MRP as a token of appreciation to those supporting our development. As development progresses, the price will increase to reflect the increase of game content and value.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We'd love to engage the community to get a sense for which features are valued the most; expanding enemies or worlds, procedural generation or more weapons, etc. We want to discuss with y'all on our forums, take in suggestions for game elements, and guide the development of our game to make sure we put our focus on the "best" parts of the game.”

Early Access - Build 33

https://gfycat.com/FineInfamousKagu

Today's new feature is the bubble slingshot. The disc weapon is a combat staple, but sometimes you need to have tools to support your combat bots, rather than simply add more damage. The bubble slingshot lets you set up a zone of control with bubbles that will snare the enemy. To recharge bubbles you shake the controller, of course.

It's especially useful for keeping your worker drones safe by dropping a bubble zone around the crystal area. There is still some polish and tweaks on-going for this weapon, so feedback would be very welcome - how/why it was useful to you, what felt good or bad, etc.

The minor bonus feature today is a new wave mode 'Hyper'. This is some tweaked wave mode settings that spawns steadily over time, all over the map. We tested with some night mode lighting to see how that feels - this is also work in progress!

Changelist:

  • added hyper wave mode
  • added night scene
  • optimize tutorial scene
  • added environmental ruins
  • cleanup internal pylon code
  • optimize worker drone scanning
  • fix rare crash on object kill
  • fix battery lock in demo mode
  • fix many particles not destroying after completion
  • fix turret insert holograms not appearing
  • fix bug causing objects to travel to infinity
  • change disc melee to not break
  • tweak disc homing force up
  • improve disc melee hit detection
  • improve disc melee hit effects
  • demo mode turret infinite charge, faster shot
  • rts mode work in progress
  • spaceship work in progress

Early Access - Build 32

http://gfycat.com/CorruptGroundedKudu

We've added a new transition effect for moving between scenes and starting up the game.

Today's build also has a ton of fixes, polish and internal updates. We upgraded to Unity 5.5, replaced our particle effects plugin and fixed a ton of outstanding bugs. The particle system was taking 3-4ms per frame (out of 10ms~ total), and now it is down to 0.5ms. There should be a good performance improvement for anyone who was CPU bound before.

Steam was not overwriting config files when we updated them if they were locally modified, so we split the Default.json file into two parts: Default.json which is read-only now, and overwritten by updates; and User.json where you can add values to overwrite the defaults. This will not be overwritten when steam updates - there is a version value now so make sure you keep them synced.

tldr: hypercube transition, large cpu optimization, many fixes

Changelist:

  • update to unity 5.5
  • add User.json for custom config overwrites
  • add async level loading during transition
  • add controller handedness detection
  • add demo mode
  • add demo thanks for playing text
  • add new hypercube transition scene
  • add player hit sounds
  • add pre-placed buildings on tutorial
  • add tutorial helper icons
  • add versioning to user config files
  • add config settings for wave spawn amounts
  • change Default.json game settings to be readonly
  • change balance (assault drone price down, defender price up)
  • change battery slots to be locked during tutorial
  • change hud reticle to scale with enemy radius
  • change menu to allow point and click
  • change tutorial popups to have different colors
  • change tutorial to be shorter and simpler
  • fix assault bot trail effects
  • fix collision issue on tutorial scene
  • fix collision layers on structure buttons
  • fix demo mode wave timing
  • fix drone beam effect orientation
  • fix economy tutorial spinning with icon
  • fix ectoplant / crystals on tutorial scene
  • fix ectoplasm receive particles not destroying
  • fix friend bot double confetti
  • fix grabbing multiple turrets simultaneously
  • fix harvest particles on drone
  • fix medic bot beams error
  • fix menu input not working after bot touching
  • fix menu opening
  • sound wrong sometimes
  • fix mesh combiner duplicate warnings
  • fix mobius effect on turret
  • fix rotation on vr rig setup
  • fix some incorrect shield collision flags
  • fix spatialization on hud sounds
  • fix turret controller holograms showing up incorrectly
  • fix tween crash on menu
  • fix various tutorial text
  • improve disc weapon homing curve
  • improve shield regen effect
  • improve turret gun sounds
  • improve turret haptics
  • increase fighter bot health
  • optimize particle effects (removed particle playground)
  • optimize synth menu close check
  • optimize tutorial enemy queries
  • reduce ectoplant patch density
  • reduce fighter drone scan range
  • remove index numbers on tutorial
  • remove particle playground plugin
  • disable twitch in demo mode

About This Game

Cosmic Trip is all about bringing RTS gameplay into a native VR (room-scale) experience. After being deployed on an alien planet, you will build structures, harvest resources and build your army of cosmobots to defend your base and launch assaults on the enemy. Ancient alien pylons on the planet form a network of base nodes for you to capture and push back the alien enemy forces in this intergalactic tug-of-war.

Feel the power as your army of bad-ass flying robots swarms around you to form an impenetrable ball of death!

FEATURES

  • Native VR room-scale RTS gameplay. Motion-controlled with HTC Vive controllers.
  • Strategically deploy your cosmobot forces to combat and to capture territories
  • Equip futuristic VR weapons
  • Manage and optimize your resource supply-line with harvesting cosmobots
  • Build defensive structures and turrets to fortify your bases
  • Gnarly tunes and groovy vibes

NOTES

The core gameplay of Cosmic Trip is aimed at being strategic RTS gameplay experience. However, in First Person Room Scale VR this is a quite different experience, since you are fully immersed in the midst of the action. The strategy of the game centers around the nodes on each planet, laid out in a network to allow the player to develop strategic choices on where to capture and defend, and how to allocate your resources effectively.

We've also explored weapon designs and interactions that feel natural and fun to use in VR. The goal of these weapon designs is easy to use, but hard to master. Skillful use of weapons can turn the tide of battle significantly.

Currently, we are releasing the Cosmic Trip as a pre-release Steam Early Access to engage the community so that we can better understand what features y'all are digging the most. It is still quite early in development and we have a lot planned ahead. So hop on and join us for the ride!

System Requirements

This is difficult to review due to the current game offered. I wish there were a "Recommended once out of Early Access" selection.

What is it?
A strategy game in room-scale VR. It's very similar to a tower defense game; as a player you build structures and bots, and you can assist your autonomous forces with turrets, frisbee lasers, etc.

Is it fun?
Yes.

Should I buy it?
Not yet. I'll explain.

The game is very intuitive, and the mechanics are very fun, but there's a severe lack of content. What's in the game is very polished, and aside from some preformance issues when there's a lot of robots flying around, there's not a lot I can fault it on aside from said lack of content. I think once they start filling in things to do, this could be one of those "must buy" VR games that gets copied due to how mechanically satisfying it is.

Is it worth trying if I have a chance/have access to the game?
Yes, via family sharing or going to someone's house. It's definitely worth trying, it just might not be worth buying quite yet.

I seriously need to gush for a second.

PROS:

These guys very much understand haptics, what feels good in VR and amazing VR controls. Not only what FEELS good, but the gorgeous polish they're putting on the environment and models. And seriously that little bot that waves at me is one of the best things ever. He's so ♥♥♥♥ing cute and I I love it every time he waves at me with his cute little robot wings and his dumb little smiley face. I don't even know his purpose but I'm glad he's there. The guys from Fantastic Contraption need to steal this little guys personality and put it into the kitty that gives you all the parts.

So a couple things. The haptics on everything you grab or vacuum to your controller feels so good. All the bumps, buzzes, and everything that let you know when to look at your controller, when you're picking something up, everything... feels SO GOOD. The generous amount of vacuum you get to pull things to you and pick things up is so very welcome and perfect. The physics on tossing and throwing stuff around IS SO GOOD. There's this Frisbee weapon that you can equip to help fight off baddies. it has just enough autoaim "homing" that makes it amazing feeling. I've played another frisbee VR game and is was terrible. This makes it feel like such a cool weapon. Even just tossing out bots to deploy them feels just like it should. You guys are seriously ♥♥♥♥ing nailing everything about the "feel" of VR. The UI is top notch. The method of choosing things to build and placing them out is top ♥♥♥♥ing notch. I don't know who you guys are or where you came from but you're a big ♥♥♥♥ing deal and I'm super excited to see what comes of this game and what you're going to do for VR.

Also, can I just compliment the controller model for a minute? It feels like such love was put into it. That tiny little window that lets you see through it... I dunno man, you guys are just killing it on attention to detail. <3

The turret is AWESOME. That thing just feels amazing when you snap into it and go full Rambo on those aliens. It feels really neat and I'm excited for more turret modes. PLEASE GIVE US A CHAIN LIGHTING TURRET MODE TO TAKE OUT SWARMS! :)

KUDOS.

CONS:

I mean I have some negative criticism but I think it's simply because it's not done yet. I am keeping in mind that this is the very first build of Early Access but here are some things to consider if you're wanting a fully finished game right off the bat. Granted, keep in mind, early access is only $15 which is a steal because I'm positive this game will be worth double that once finished.

Like for starters, the goal right now is basically, survive as many waves as you can. Eventually you either die or you build so many bots the game can't keep up and it lags. Also, there does seem to be a bug where if sometimes gather bots just won't take minerals to empty, available, powered refineries. Devs confirmed this bug but just be prepared for some weird behavior there from time to time.

The other thing to prepare yourself for is how frustrating it can be when you accidentally "vacuum" batteries out of your robot factories or refineries. To remove a battery, you should have to do something like hit a power button first THEN pull the battery. That would solve that issue.

CONCLUSION:

These are minor nitpicks and again, keep in mind this is sort of a first draft of what's potentially going to be the single most polished VR game to date. But holy crap are the Devs nailing the feel of this game. The haptics, look, feel, design, and heart of this game makes me so happy. Get this game on early access understanding that there are only 3 structures, a 2 possible robots to build and that it's a survival wave based defense game to show you the core mechanics. Know that the RTS part of this game IS COMING. But once you load it up you'll instantly understand the care and love they're putting into all of the details of this game.

I recommend you get this.

Cosmic Trip is very fun with a great atmosphere and graphic style but be warned, being an early access game there unfortunately isn't a lot of content yet. It looks like the developers have a lot more planned with plenty "(coming soon)" tabs in the game, like maps and various buildings/robots.

As of right now you'll really experience everything that's in the game within the first 15-20minutes. The current game mode is survival where you are fighting off waves of attacking aliens while trying to defend the bases you've built, I played for an hour straight and had all my bases fully defended and so much income spilling in I couldn't hope to spend it all. That being said, I had an absolute blast doing it! Seriously once you've thrown some laser bots out and are firing away on the turret you'll be having a good time.
As far as how the game plays I've noticed a few bugs, none of which were even remotley game breaking and I only had fps issues once when I had way too many bots working on one reactor pretty late into the game.

Pros
Great atmosphere and graphics style
Incredibly cute robots that are fun to throw
Smooth fps
fun combat

Cons
Lack of content
AI begins to get derpy the longer you play

Overall I enjoy the game and at $14.99 ($13.49 currently on sale) I'd certainly reccomend it. I generally am not a fan of Early Access but I'm quite hopeful for this one as it's already running well and a joy to play.

OMG this is excellent! There is not much content right now, but that is fine because the core game mechanics and control schema is well thought out and executed. I am so tired of developers trying to sell me bad VR alpha and beta tech demos so they can get a piece of the cut. If you are an early VR adopter looking for compelling use cases, this is one of them. Buy this game and support the devs!

The game is surprisingly polished for something so early in development. I'm having a hard time figuring out if I want to recomend it or not. At this early stage I'd say not but it shows potential.

Having said that. Let's go through the feature list on the steam page because I feel like this game is a bit deceptive about how much there is to it presently. (Especially since its so cute, appealing and polished)

- Native VR room-scale RTS gameplay. Motion-controlled with HTC Vive controllers.
Check

- Strategically deploy your cosmobot forces to combat and to capture territories
Really not sure about the word "strategical", seems to be just build lots of laser bots and help them fight but that's really all there is to it. In fact I found it more efficient to stay in one place despite the really awesome and fun portals that woosh you to another spot. There's no reason to go there over anywhere else. I guess you could say your supply bot to laser bot ratio is a strategy but not a very deep one.

- Equip futuristic VR weapons
Equip 1 futurristic weapon (unless you count the turret)

- Manage and optimize your resource supply-line with harvesting cosmobots
As with strategy, all there is to it is to "manage" is to make lots of supply bots and put power in your refinery every now and then

- Build defensive structures and turrets to fortify your bases
There's one turret right now.

- Gnarly tunes and groovy vibes
As far as I can tell there was only one cowboy sounding soundtrack. Interesting theme choice.

I should add that there is a distinct lack of goal at the moment. And challenge for that matter. I played hard mode and threw up a bunch of bots and they seemed to manage themselves just fine even if I wasn't helping fight, but the only reason I seemed to be there was to get more crystals.

Would recommend waiting for further development before backing but it does show great potential so I'll be watching this space

Honestly, I'm not about to say anything that hasn't already been said, but I thought one more positive couldn't hurt.

Positive-

Design and feel are great, interacting with everything in this world simply feels RIGHT. It feels natural!

Attention to detail is astounding, there's a lot in here that simply doesn't need to be, and totally rounds out the experience as a whole (especially the little bot, I call him Buzz ^_^)

The navigation is top notch, wether its teleporting to different areas or going through the menu, everything is easy to pick up immedietly

BEST TUTORIAL IN ANY VR GAME. PERIOD. One major issue with VR games is that many don't have a solid tutorial, and leave you to either figure it out, or search the interwebs. For anyone who owns a Vive, the interwebs probably aren't a foriegn land, but having such a solid tutorial is really a standout right now.

Cons-

Its not finished. Straight up, that's the only con. This is the very first release of an Early Access, so of course it isn't finished, but it's very not finished. There's even a little blip in the instructions that seems to refer to capturing towers (of which there are two on the map), but the actual mechanic for capturing them simply doesn't exist. You can also see all of the locked spaces in the menus where they plan on putting more things.

Overall-

Get it. Yes, it's severely lacking in content, and if the devs tried to release it right now, as a full game, I would say screw them. But, this is the first in many betas to come, and I will be absulutley astounded if this doesn't jump in price, because the gameplay is just THAT GOOD.

To the Devs-

You are men, with a very particular set of skills.
Now, I don't know who you are, but I will find you, and I will play every game you've ever created.

Because you my friends, are amazing! Keep up the hard work, I cannot wait to play more of Cosmic Trip and or any other games you put out in the future (Seriously, I'll play them in Alpha, or Pre-Alpha! That's how much I like this XD).

Buy this!

Pros:

* The game has an incredibly polished and solid foundation. It feels like an AAA game

* Really made for VR - Awesome haptics, the joy of throwing bots around, cool user interactions with everything

* Beautiful graphics

* Very well optimized, this is a great looking VR game and even with 40+ bots i didn't drop a frame on my old crappy 280x

* The core gameplay is addictive, satisfying and engaging. Building bots, plugging in batteries, deploying bots and even navigating the ui all feels fluid, fun and funky.

Cons:

* Since this is an early access game you should know this allready - there is very little content. If you're buying it right now it's to support the dev or because you are prepared to wait for the occasional content dumps.

There's not too much of the game so far, but what is there is amazing. The game has a very chill tone to it. Even if you're firing on a machine gun you have a bit of a serene joy going on. Friend bot also has a special place in my heart as one of the cutest game mascots in existance.

This game is awesome and I could end it right here.

Can't complain about the lack of content, it's not finished and the devs warn you there's only Survival right now. It's currently not particularly hard, eventually you end up with so many bots at every expansion that you just don't care and only teleport to replenish batteries in refineries and maybe build some new bots for good measure. But content will come! I look forward to more enemy types, attacks on different bases (especially not the ones you're currently at) etc.

As it stands right now the game looks and sounds great, the building menu is really intuitive and I love that I an queue a bot cartridge in each hand for rapid double bot factory building. There are some bugs and quirks, but it's too early to critisize.

...my only problem was that cute friend bot. Quite early on he stopped floating and just lay on the ground, ocassionally waving his little cutesy robot hand at me. I picked him up and tried to feed him a battery, but he just wouldn't take it! It was breaking my heart, so I made sure to take him in my hand every time I teleported so he wouldn't have to move on his own.

At one point I pulled the Vive headset cables out while spinning around in a fight. I scrambled to plug them back in (Looking like a complete idiot I'm sure). But, the game handled it perfectly and didn't crash (which is kind of remarkable). I only stopped playing much, much later because I completely drained one the controllers.

I'm still seeing bots fly around me as I type...

Pros:
- I love the game mechanics. It's easy to see the potential of an RTS in VR.
- Controls are very well thought out, and extremely intuitive. Some of the best in VR.
- Truly addictive gameplay.
- You can teleport yourself or your little buddies, sending reinforcements to another station (Extra attention to detail).

Cons:
- With a lot of enemies and bots (90+) the game will lag, and lag badly. Feels like it's an affect of AI / collision code, and not the typical graphics processing. The sound gets choppy, and many frames are dropped, but not in a way that would make me woozy. When this happens it can prevent you from controlling a turret. Hopefully this will get fixed, it's still in preview after all :)
- A large play space is needed for this game. You will run into problems placing devices outside your walls. I have a decent space, but this game makes me wish I had another couple feet to spread out.
- There's not a lot of strategy to the game yet. It's mostly action at this point, but it's still early days.

Suggestions for devs:
- The turret needs some kind of iron sight. There's the little glass rectangle, but with nothing to pair it with, it's just for show and doesn't really help with aiming.
- More things to build! Maybe walls, a shield generator, a laser/sniper cannon (would be nice to defend a station at a distance).
- Provide a way to sell/move a device. I made the mistake of placing factories too close to each other making it impossible to load one with new batteries, and I placed my first turret 2 inches outside my reach within a wall. If Items could be moved/sold, then you could allow things to be built in closer proximity (since a poor placement could be fixed) making this more playable for smaller spaces, and thereby more potential players.
- The beep sound effect for instructions in the tutorial got extremely annoying within the first 20 minutes of play. Suggest something softer or less intrusive. Something more "Hey, listen!" and less "COMPLY HUMAN!"
- When first making the bots it's easy to forget which ones do what, maybe add a little label/icon to their skins, so that you can pull one to you and read what they do. There's a missed opportunity to add some whimsy here with such a description/icon.
- The bubble gun recharges too slow to be helpful to me, so I never use it. Maybe if it were ~25% faster recharging?
- Switching between bubble gun/shield/disks was the only part of the controls that gave me any problem. Sometimes it just wouldn't let me switch. Needs a bit more "snap" range.
- Add a "hero" bot. There currently isn't much strategy to the game aside from placement of the distance-shooting bots and your turrets. During a battle, you don't have the time to direct bots at all, you just have to fight with them which dilutes the "strategy" part of the game. If there was a bot that acted like a General, that could "command" a few other bots that you throw at it, then you could have some strategy during a battle. By throwing/sending that General bot in a direction you'd be able to control the battle a bit more.

...ok I'll stop now. Sorry.

One of the best VR games I have played. I enjoyed the interaction model, and thought the whole thing well executed. Setting up my swam of bots was fun, and running the turret was enjoyable. Game plateaus after a while, but there are other difficulty levels. I'd love to see an expansion on this.

Very pretty and very polished for what little content there is at the moment. I bought this the day it came out with great hopes but here we are almost 4 months later and the game hasn't changed all too much in terms of adding gameplay.

Like any early access game it has potential, but even early access could have waited until the "strategy" mode was finished (which I think is the reason most people bought it Day 1 anyway).

Look at the time played for all the positive reviews and ask yourself if an hour or two is worth $20.

it's still a bit bare bones right now but this game is shaping up to be a fantastic take on node-based-strategy and tower defense. Highly polished visuals and audio, the art direction really makes this game what it is!
