A thoroughly enjoyable experience, if a little on the short side. Most of the puzzles only took a minute or two to solve. The water bears are exceedingly cute and will come out to play with you after completing each puzzle.

The VR controls are intuitive. The game is playable in a smaller than recommended play area, but in that case some puzzles may not be viewable from all sides.

Lovely, colorful and fun

Requires a HTC Vive to play in case you didn't read the store page
If you don't have a Vive please don't rate the game down it's a lovely game.

Pros:

+Fun casual game
+Has achievements
+Lovely colorful graphics
+Interesting and fun gameplay
+Utilizes the HTC Vive excellently
+It's cute! WATER BEARS EVERYWHERE!
+Free at release but will change (Devs offered it for free for a limited time)
+Puzzles are fun to do and not too challanging, love the different colored water bears and pipes

Cons:

-Water bears get sad and thirsty :(
-Only free for a limited amount of time (No longer free)
-Can't adopt the water bears into real life
-Only playable with the HTC Vive headset

Download Size: 392mb
Achievement Difficulty: Easy to 100%

Rating: 8/10
Recommendation: Worth playing

My Opinion:

Beautiful, vibrant and a lovely game for the VR. The makers where nice enough to give the game out for free for a while, but even now that it's priced it is still a good game to pick up for the VR.

End Note: This game is lovely yet it gets so much hate because it requires a Vive headset and most can't play it. Not fair to rate it down because you can't play it.

So I've actually played this on my HTC Vive and can confirm that it's charming and delightful in every way. It's one of the most polished real games for the Vive at this time. While it won't resonate with the typical Steam user, your girlfriends, wives, and moms will enjoy this game. Makes for a great soft friendly intro to VR.

This is so far the best game I've been able to play with my Vive.
It's totally a game I can let my friends play and experience the joys of VR!

Message from the game:

Water Bears VR requires the Vive to be playable.

Please exit the game, check your Vive is properly connected, and restart the game.

10 / 10 Would try to play a VR game without a VR device again.

Don't take this game for face value -- what seems like a childish puzzle game is really one of the most charming games that the HTC Vive has to offer. Being able to try the development version when touring Schell Games last November is what convinced me that the Vive was worth buying.

Water Bears takes a classic puzzle game and turns it into an incredible experience. The relaxing atmosphere and music combined with the most immersive controls out of any game I've tried so far make this a must-have Vive game. Good for showing VR to non-gamer friends, too.

Water Bears VR is a polished and easy to get into VR game. The VR environment is wonderfully bright and colorful, don't let the cartoony-style fool you, this game is immersive. The puzzles are fun and there are enough things to warrant the $9.99 USD.

The game most closely resembles Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker in terms of the action being centered around a winding blocky mountain you have to traverse around. With the added VR it makes Water Bears VR entertaining and not invasive, a really good place to start with VR.

The puzzle difficulty is quite basic at first and then starts to ramp up with different pipe types and needing to mix colors together for certain Water Bears.

The biggest downfall of the game is its 3m x 3m room requirement. I didn't have enough room (about 2.6m x 2.8) and it still worked just fine so I'm not sure what the need for all that space is (you don't even use most of the edge space).

Pros
  • Great aesthetics to experience in VR
  • Fun puzzles akin to Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
  • Cute interactions with the Water Bears gives added VR depth.
  • Great price point of $9.99 USD
  • Perfect for demoing VR in a non-invasive and interactive way.

Cons
  • 3m x 3m room size requirement (I wable able to play with less)
  • Lack of passive interaction with the enviroment.

All in all I'd say this is a must-have VR experience.

A while back this game was on a promo for free, and even though I didn't have a VR headset at the time, I knew i'd be getting one sooner or later, so I grabbed it while I could. I was going to play it the other day and then saw that the game actually required just a tad bit more space than I had available... my bed was in the way or I'd have had the space for it for sure.

Well I said "screw it" and traced my play space so that it went over the edge of my bed so I could play this game. Occasionally I would be RIGHT up against one of the boundries but I made it. Also if you have a ceiling fan: turn it off if you value your hands. I turned mine off and I still wound up banging my hands against the light fixtures (I would have probably hit the blades with the controllers too).

So what is Water bears VR? Basically you have these cutesy little tardigrades that sit inside little bubbles asleep. Your goal is to fill the bubble with water so that they wake up and float/fly off through the air. Sounds easy? It is! You just connect pipes to make sure the water flows towards the bubble and that's all you have to worry about at first.

Later you get puzzles where the pieces are in short supply so you have to be careful, and eventually there's different colors of water that you have to direct to the appropriately colored water bear. It gets slowly more complicated as time goes on.

Also, you can do most of the puzzles standing up, but occasionally you'll have to crouch down to see better, and of course you'll want to view the puzzle from all sides.

In between levels you step into a teleporting tube (marked with footprints in a circle on the ground) and that teleports you to the next level or back to the hub. I only saw 4 main sets of puzzles (each set had 4-6 puzzles in it) with a few special bonus puzzles. No puzzle was so difficult that I couldn't complete it with a bit of experimentation and I got through 75% of the puzzles I saw in one sitting.

Maybe the game is aimed at younger kids? In any case, it's fun The title doesn't make you think "puzzle game" though. For $10 it's worth a run through just for the cutesy environment and the "pipe laying" gameplay. Difficulty is probably suitable for kids age 10+ and if you're looking for a game to add to your VR library this wouldn't be a bad addition (if you like puzzle games).

A creative puzzle game utilizing the 3d space that VR provides. Good for both kids and adults (including four packs of more challenging levels)
Also the Tardigrades (water bears) are very cute!

Somehow I ended up with this in my libary free prior to the Vive being launched and never got around to playing it. I just tried it for the first time and it's great. The visuals and sound are nice (well suited to the gameplay), the game itself is just a simple but fun puzzle game. That said, it works really well in VR (at least on the Vive...though maybe the same for the Rift if you have controllers).

For the price it's a good buy and considering it was made during the development stages of the Vive, it holds up really well. Hope we see more games this polished.

I put off playing this for far to long. It was fun and the presentation was very polished. I just wish there were more challenging levels.

A very nice concept but unfortunately useless for my target audience: my 4-yr old daughter. The reason is simple: no height adjustment.
It was clearly designed with an adult in mind - she cannot reach the pipes on top.

Until this is fixed, I cannot recommend this.

So I bought this game for my daughter who is about to start second grade. She likes the Vive and I figured that I would get something that would make her use her brain. Obviously I had to test it out to make sure it was age appropriate and so that I could explain to her how to play in case she has problems. So just one puzzle, maybe two.

Yeah, an hour later of playing and I'm already making plans to finish out all the levels while she's at school so I don't lose my progress when I reset it for her.

For $10 this is a great little casual puzzler. Probably only 1.5 hours of play but it's a well-done product and is appropriate for younger children.

UPDATE: One problerm with this children-themed game is that the virtual table that you play on is actually too high for most younger children to play on. Even my seven year old, who is tall for her age, has to stretch to reach some of the upper levels of the puzzles. This also puts her at a severe disadvantage because she doesn't have a very good vantage point to look at the puzzle from. There are some later levels where looking down on the puzzle is almost a necessity to get a good picture of how to solve it. Hopefully the developers will add a calibration or "short person" option in a future update to address this.

Disclaimer: I don't condone the malicious intent of this developper to represent the Water Bears as nice, cute creatures. They definitely ARE not. If you are curious enough to want to check them in google, don't. They are nasty little monsters, the matter nightmares are made from.

Other than that I really love this game. It's fun and challenging for adults, despite the kiddo ambiance, and it has quickly become one of my favourite games on the vive (roomscale for the win!). I hope more games like this reach Steam, even if they aren't as bling-bling or AAA, or whatever gives a game the right to be popular now. I recomend it to any VR headset owner that wants to understand what VR can bring to the "table" as a new medium.
