Version 1.1 Brutal Edition

We’ve reached a milestone in our ongoing improvement work on Necropolis. Eight weeks ago, Harebrained Schemes committed to respond to feedback from critics and the community with a series of free updates and improvements. That work culminates in today’s free update, the NECROPOLIS BRUTAL EDITION.

Version 1.1 contains the following additions, enhancements, and fixes for Necropolis.

  • Added a new playable character, The Brute, with 7 unique armor sets including the fearsome Raider’s Garb which offers increased damage at some hefty costs.
  • Added a new outdoor environment, The Black Forest, with 36 new modules!
  • Added a new starting module to reduce the time needed to get back into the action.
  • Added 7 more new enemies including the Bandit - watch it, he’ll steal your loot!
  • Added 16 new weapons, with unique abilities such as the Arcane Shadow - a devastating maul that deals incredible amounts of damage, but its curse strips the player of most of their defenses, use at your own risk.
  • Added new traps, the Necropolis wasn’t deadly enough so we added some spinning blades and even deadlier spike traps. The Black Forest has its own traps, too.
  • Added 5 new consumable items (potions, scrolls, etc.) including the Multiplayer focused Resurrection scroll! All your fellow adventurers in danger and downed? Revive them from a safe distance!
  • Added new loot! Recipes are now part of loot drops, you can find them throughout the Necropolis. Buying is now just one way to expand your potion and crafting potential!
  • Improvements to blocking and shield bashing. Stamina costs for successful blocks has been reduced, as well as the threshold for shield breaks has been increased, meaning it will happen less often. Lastly, damage bleed through (in the event of shield break) has been lowered.
  • General performance improvements
  • Localized all text

These 1.1 release improvements are of course in addition to the previous improvements we’ve released since launch, which include:

Content
  • Added 2 more new enemies, including the Fire Djinn.
  • Added 6 more new weapons featuring unique abilities and effects including one which slows enemies with each slash, for example.
  • Added 2 more new armor sets with greater risks and rewards.
  • Added an additional new potion and scroll, each designed for higher impact in Multiplayer.
  • Added several new behaviors to some enemies for greater challenge (flanking, grouping, predictive movement, and attack cycling).
  • Added 25 more new environment modules.
  • Balance changes for Changelings, Gemeaters, Spider Queen, Bone Effigy, and Naguals.
  • Buff to ‘Mr. Monk's Most Excellent Pamphlet on Avoiding Exhaustion’ Codex, it now regenerates more exhaustion than before and in a shorter time scale.
  • Major rebalance to the revive system. Revive will now bring you back at a diminished ratio every time you die down to a minimum HP and Stamina/Exhaustion.
  • Loot re-balance:
    • Reduced gem drops on all enemies
    • Reduced crafting drops on all enemies
    • Removed Iron Ration from starting recipies
    • Reduced crafting cost on Potion of Big Boy Strength
    • Increased crafting cost of some common recipes
  • Jumping is now more responsive, allowing you to jump out of more situations or in quick succession.
  • Improved UI messaging to reflect save actions, “Save & Quit to Desktop” and “Save & Exit To Title screen” text.
  • Major update to all weapon and codex descriptions to expose more functionality.
  • Improvements to AI aggro line of sight.
  • Added early spawn opportunities for some larger, stronger enemies on earlier floors.
  • Revised and rebalanced all armor sets.
  • Added new spawn animations for some Skeletons and Hoardmen.
  • Revised Hoardman aware behavior to make them quicker to take action.
  • Corrected imbalanced effects on some healing potions.
  • Changed “Rotten Is Just Another Word for Delicious” codex to completely prevent vomiting when eating rotten food.
  • Added option to invert X-Axis Camera to Options / Settings.
  • Added DLC Soundtrack files.

Bug Fixes
  • Fixed an issue with our procedural environment algorithm. A large assortment of previously hidden environment modules (over 30) are now available.
  • Resolved minor issue with elemental VFX and SFX.
  • More responsive general performance on lower spec computers.
  • Resolved minor audio issues in multiplayer.
  • Removed armor switching exploit.
  • Resolved issue that prevented a menu option from displaying text in several languages.
  • Found a workaround for crashes at launch when using a Razer headset.
  • Removed developer console access.
  • Resolved an issue that could prevent the main menu from opening on launch when Necropolis was set to several non-English languages.
  • Steam Achievements are now viewable through the Steam client.
  • Fixed an occasional issue with multiplayer jitter when switching armor.
  • Fixed many minor bugs.

“The Necropolis you can play today is very different from, and vastly superior to, the Necropolis that launched in July. […] So if you wrote this game off or have been on the fence about it, now is as good a time as any to jump in, because in all honestly, you’re missing out on one of the finest gaming experiences of the year.”
9.2/10 – Absolute Geeks

“While roguelike and roguelike-inspired games such as these feel like a dime a dozen in recent times, Necropolis stands out simply by being the best that it can be, with a striking visual style, great sense of humor and an enjoyable co-op mode working together with immense, randomized, yet terrifically-designed levels and some great combat.”
4.5/5 – Hardcore Gamer

“Battles shine with crazy enemy variety—and epic ones feel even more thrilling in co-op [...] hero and enemy designs are among the coolest in the roguelike genre.”

About This Game

NECROPOLIS: BRUTAL EDITION is a major update featuring a new playable adventurer (The Brute), a completely new outdoor environment (The Black Forest), and lots of new enemies, weapons, armor, traps, potions, scrolls, and other big improvements to the game.

The BRUTAL EDITION is the definitive NECROPOLIS experience. HERE’S WHAT’S NEW:

  • The Brute - a formidable new player character
  • The Black Forest - a completely new wintry outdoor biome to explore
  • Deadly new enemies and improved AI behaviors
  • Greatly expanded environmental variety, including new traps and gameplay
  • Clearer descriptions for all items in the game, including weapons, armor, recipes, potions, and magical codexes
  • Improved game balance and loot economy
  • New weapons, armor, potions, scrolls, and more!

NECROPOLIS combines third-person action with Rogue-lite dungeon-delving for a game that’s fast-paced and addictive, yet diabolically hardcore. Adventure alone, or with up to 3 friends in a magical deathtrap that reconstructs itself each time you play. Craft, equip, explore, and fight to stay alive as you delve deeper and face ever-greater threats in the twisting halls and endless chasms of the NECROPOLIS. Have no doubt, you’re going to die - often! - but you’ll improve your combat skills, available upgrades, and dungeon know-how with every playthrough, bringing you one step closer to the exit. (Warning: “Just one more time” mindset can be addicting.)

IN NECROPOLIS, DEATH IS...

  • ...PERMANENT. Game Over? Jump right back in with a new adventurer and try again!
  • ...DIFFERENT EVERY TIME. A new procedurally-generated dungeon with every death.
  • ...BETTER WITH FRIENDS. Drop-in / drop-out CO-OP multiplayer for up to 4 players!
  • ...MONSTROUS. Gemeaters, Changelings, Hoardmen, and more - they exist to kill you.
  • ...NOT WITHOUT PERKS. Each new dungeon is littered with powerful weapons, armor, and upgrades to wield against your foes. (And there’s crafting, too!)
  • ...UNAVOIDABLE. But don’t worry, this NEXT playthrough is totally the one. We’ve got a good feeling about it.

Gotta be honest, i was looking forward to this game for a long time, but bought it just after the massive update to avoid frustration. Yes, this game still needs some polish and optimisation, but it's a really REALLY fun game. If you're a fan of Dark Souls and you have no problem in frequent deaths then you will ,most likely, love this game.
Pros:
+art style (this can be considered as a matter of taste but i find it very appealing)
+procedurally-generated (this game nails in it's random generated rooms, very unlikely to see the same room twice)
+solid combat mechanics (almost identical to dark souls but without parrying, even the button mappings are the same)
+humor (this game is pretty funny but it has that strange sense of humor, the only game that i can compare it too in that sense is Oddworld)
Cons:
-polish (definitely needs some, you will see weird things like when you break pots their parts fly in like 20 fps)
-optimisation (don't want to critisize the game's graphics but c'mon, it should run as smoothly as it can possibly be on medium-high spec PC's)

If the developers continue to update this WILL be a very solid game.

I like this game, I really ♥♥♥♥ing do. I enjoy every second of it. Unfortantely, there's nothing left for me to do. There are areas that you encounter in the game that look like something is supposed to happen in, but nothing, just vast nothingness. I finished the game with a friend and just nothing happened. Just know it has the potential, but that it's not there yet. So, keep an eye on this game - wait for updates, buy it on sale, just not now.

I originally left a negative review during the initial release of this game due to many problems that seemed to be nearly unanimously agreed upon by people who purchased it.

I'm super happy to say that (personally, at least) this is no longer the case. The devs listened to any and all criticism their players had to share and compiled them onto a list, and quickly figured out a plan on what steps to take from there. They've delivered on their word, and though they've only started, have fixed SO much already. A lot of variety and changes, an entire new character to pick, item descriptions fixed up to be useful and still keep that witty humour and slight vagueness, bug fixes, and a decent bit more. While I'm not sure that at this very moment the game is worth the full $30, it's definitely nearing that point. These are devs who clearly care about their product and work to fix any mistakes or dislikes their players may have.

If this is your type of game or it looks appealing to you, buy it. It's solid now, and only going to keep improving. This was a game with a messy release and a lot of potential, and it's beginning to realize that potential, which is really exciting!

Having a lot of fun with the game! Absolutely adore the art style and all the designs!
The music fits perfectly as well, really atmospheric!
Not sure what the future plans for the devs is, but I hope they continue to expand on the game and produce more content for it. ♥

This game is really dang fun, its dark souls but it has a much easier way to play with friends while you dive into a seemingly endless dungeon.

Honestly though, I haven't gotten that far in this game because I either get murdered by my friends or by the game glitching so freaking bad I literally can't play anymore.

I still reccomend cuz its fun as hell, but the devs just made a hot fix and my game is aaaaaaaalllllllmost unplayable right now. I sometimes can't use my attack, I sometimes can't walk through doors I open and I sometimes just lift straight up into the air never to return.

like 7/11 its fun to play with friends, but gotdamn it needs some help

This game scratches an itch I've had for a while. Zelda/Souls style combat with slightly toned down difficulty. The roguelike elements could use a little work, almost no carryover between runs doesn't feel super rewarding. Would like to see more than two character classes and more variety in weapon movesets. Hopefully Harebrained keeps working on it or releases a sequel. That being said, I love it, I've recommended it to friends, and I'm going to keep playing.

While I didn't play before the Brutal update, I can say that this game is a ton of fun in its current state and I fully expect it to improve with time.

Pros:
+every playthrough is different. The replayability and rouge-lite progression keeps the game interesting
+COMBAT IS DIFFICULT (somewhat like Dark Souls), but not impossible. Beating a horde of enemies feels rewarding
+fresh and interesting art style, doesn't get old
+a total blast with friends, seriously convince a few buddies to get this too.
+hours or minutes- its doesn't take too long to make a little progress in this game (at least on an individual run), so it doesn't have to be a massive time commitment. However I had enough fun to log most of the 6 hours I have at the time of writing this review in one sitting.

cons:
-enemies get somewhat repetitive. randomized loot would make it more interesting maybe, or just more types of enemies. However the devs seem to be addressing this as the Brutal update added more enemies and I would expect them to add even more variation in the future.
-occasional stutters. For me it hasn't been anything game-breaking, I'm on a medium-tier gaming rig
-some people report crashes and etc. Devs are active in the forums addressing some of these issues. I personally have crashed twice, verifying game cash and running the game as admin seemed to fix it (though honestly it may have been a momentary hiccup and my 'fix' has nothing to do with it lol)

I want to start this review by saying that, when this game came out in July of this year, I actually stayed well away due to all negative feedback and attention it got; despite this, however, I did keep a close eye on it to see how the developers over at Harebrained Schemes dealt with all the bad press and negative reviews, and to my honest surprise they really stepped up and decided to take the community’s suggestions and ideas on board to make this game a much better game all round – Maybe the likes of Hello Games could learn a thing or two here…

The changes they made were the inclusion of a new playable character (The Brute), a completely new outdoor environment (The Black Forest), new and improved enemies, armour, potions, scrolls, weapons, and other big improvements to the game’s AI – Given this, however, were the changes that they made to this game in alignment to what the community wanted? Personally, I would say yes. Yes they certainly did.

Necropolis acts as a rouge-like hack and slash dungeon crawler, that’s not for people easily frustrated or stressed because after a while, you will want to throw your controller across the room and admit defeat! I will not lie, I did this a more than a couple of times but always found my self coming back for more pain like the masochist I am.

Necropolis requires you to actually think about your next move and plan a strategy as you play through, unlike most hack and slash games out there, and will most certainly punish you if you run in all guns blazing – The game comes pre-packaged along with permadeath, meaning that one wrong move, and you’re straight right back at the beginning! The way that the developers have prevented the game becoming stagnant is by adding randomly generated dungeons, so no playthrough is the same. At first i found the controls to be clunky, however after a while I realised that timing is more vital; once I had mastered this, the combat felt more fluid and smooth, and made the game that much more enjoyable.

There were many things that I loved about Necropolis, but at the same time I found aspects of the game more frustrating than fair; the fact you can craft food, potions, and other goodies was a big plus, but this can cause a big issue if you think there are no ghouls around the area, and decide to make some lovely meat, only to suddenly have a pair of teeth at your ankles and jugular, when you get wiped out by a hoard of skeletons that decided to creep up on you and ruin your meal! Another feature I loved was the easy drop-in drop-out co-op built in to the game, which made the adventure much more fun and much easier at the same time – My only gripe with this were the loot system, chests, and friendly fire, as you would have to somehow figure out a system of who would get what as only one chest would spawn as you enter each new level, items would only be able to picked up by one player, and yes, players can hit other players, leading to some awkward team kills…

Overall, I found this game highly addictive and a huge improvement on what was released back in July; the artistic take on the game really drew me in, as it wasn’t too over the top, and didn’t need to be – The game play speaks for itself! I believe that Dark Souls fans who maybe want a bit more of a challenge after pumping Dark Souls III dry will love this game, as well as fans of rouge-likes and dungeon crawlers in general!

I will happily give this game an 8.5 / 10 due to the massive improvements made in this game, and the dedication Harebrained Schemes put in to fixing it and not throwing in the towel!

Overall, Necropolis is Harebrained Schemes’ newest entry into the video game market for attempting to fill the void for Dark Souls dungeon dwellers, yet falls flat in delivering in extended plays. Initially, this action-RPG will provide players with a new mysterious world to explore and experience, leveling up your character to the max potential and chasing the next best piece of loot in an endless maze hell full of monsters. However, reaching peak level is excessively easy and game-play will become immensely dull quickly, specifically if played solo. As a fun multiplayer game for a few sessions with friends, it may be worth it. Looking for the next long action adventure full of lore and replay-ability? Look somewhere else.

Bought it Saturday and absolutely love it! My friends and I have such a blast. Glad I bought it!

Pros: Dark Souls, but easier.
Different each run
The Music
The Enviroment
Vast amount of content
Good humor
I guess the update made the game a lot better.

Cons:
Wish stats for items were more clear.
Not sure if different tiers mean anything when it comes to shields.

Listen, this game's awesome, but I'm not writing a legitimate review on this until you give me the ability to change the controls. I hate having to reach across the keyboard for every action. Gets confusing.
