About This Game

Hell is an experiment you can't survive in Outlast, a first-person survival horror game developed by veterans of some of the biggest game franchises in history. As investigative journalist Miles Upshur, explore Mount Massive Asylum and try to survive long enough to discover its terrible secret... if you dare.

Synopsis:

In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.

Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

Outlast is a true survival horror experience which aims to show that the most terrifying monsters of all come from the human mind.

Features:

  • True Survival Horror Experience: You are no fighter - if you want to survive the horrors of the asylum, your only chance is to run... or hide
  • Immersive Graphics: AAA-quality graphics give players a detailed, terrifying world to explore
  • Hide and Sneak: Stealth-based gameplay, with parkour-inspired platforming elements
  • Unpredictable Enemies: Players cannot know when - and from where - one of the asylum’s terrifying inhabitants will finally catch up to them
  • Real Horror: Outlast’s setting and characters are inspired by real asylums and cases of criminal insanity

Warning:

Outlast contains intense violence, gore, graphic sexual content, and strong language. Please enjoy.

Outlast

You play as this one dude that has camera, but smarter than the dude with a camera on the Slendarman games. You walk into this Asylum to investigate, despite knowing the dangers you'll face, you decided to bring just camera. No knife, no bandage, nothing to defend yourself. You continued walking towards the gate and into the building. The offices look pretty decent, decent enough that you can actually work in it, but you are an investigator, not an office worker.

The guy you're playing as seems to have an history about murder and rarely being surprised by dead bodies. Truth be told, you don't have a memory about your past. You're one of the protagonist who can live and finish the game without knowing you're very own history.

You meet several people, knowing that they are from an insane asylum, you believed what they say anyways and followed their order. Some want to kill you, some just ignore, and some just ask you to do stuff for them. Congrats, you just became the errand boy for them.

When halfway through the game you notice, you started to wonder, why he decided to continue exploring alone rather than going back outside and telling the police. You got enough evidence when you walked to the asylum, what else does the police need to be persuaded? The guy was one of the rejected members of the Mystery Gang where they try solving the case without the police help, that what the guy is trying to prove them that he is a capable member of the Mystery Gang. After he solves the problem, then he call the police.

In the end, you didn't call the police, you called a military group and you got F***** bad

(jk here's the real review)

Outlast does a great job with it environment. The place itself is scary enough that you want to quit the game, when you step outside your car. The people you encounter seems to be easy to avoid by just going far enough out of their AI pathing to make them stop chasing you. Some of the scares are quite predictable and easy to avoid. The story itself is pretty good and has a deeper meaning than you originally thought.

To summarize everything
You're part of the Mystery Gang
Atmosphere is great
The people in the asylum is stupid
You're smarter than the guy in Slenderman

My recommendation for this game: YES/YES

very disappointing.
a few shock scares and repetetive and very tube like gameplay.
the first time you play, it may be scary to hide in a locker and have the monster come by, opening the locker next to you and then walking out - but if that happens EVERYTIME you hide in a locker, it's just tedious and like watching the worst unskippable cut scene. again and again...

Just beat the campaign. It's scary as ♥♥♥♥ and made me (a grown ♥♥♥ man) shriek out loud at one point. I only played this at night and immersed myself in the game. Once you realize it's a stealth game, not action, the enemies become less scarier. There are still occasional jumpscares that will scare the crap out of you, but you learn to expect them. Some tips to make it less scary: turn the volume down because the music is creepy as hell, RUN and HIDE, turn the brightness/gamma up. Also your breathing gets louder when enemies are near. I plan on getting Outlast 2, especially after playing the demo.

+ Graphics are great.
+ Unique gameplay, bringing surival horror to the current gen. I've only played a little Amnesia, but I can see the similarities.
+ Scary as hell.
+ Lots of documents to collect to learn the backstory.

- Lots of backtracking, repetitive plot.
- Although I never ran out of batteries, I thought the nightvision should last longer.

(Minor spoiler): The wheelchair guy scared the living crap outta me.

Very funny and scary game. I don't know why I bought this game. I like it but I can't play it because I get scared so I guess I can' say it is bad as I am not able to play. Maybe one day I will try and livestream or record this on youtube, but for now I am just to scared.

It´s scary. It´s intriguing storywise. But it sure is not thrilling enough to make me wanna uncover the story behind the asylum and it sure has some issues I hated once I began to feel the effects of boredom.

Having batteries and needing to preserve them aren´t my cup of tea. I hate the idea of a night vision lasting 5 mins until you get to use another pair and once you are down on them your vision is basically s h i t . I want to slowly explore this game but it has this psychological effect of pressuring me in hurrying the f u c k up or playing on lowest difficulty because of this. I call this bad game design. After all the battery system serves no active effect in avoiding or battling your enemies except taking your g o d d a m n chromatic blurred ugly depth of field vision once you´ve run out of them. If you hide from enemies and don´t use it and rely on your hearing you basically notice that it´s becoming micro management intregrated into gameplay. That coupled with always being in some kinda locker or under a bed, just becomes a game of patience. When to progress is often just an lame approach of when does the f u c k ing a s s h o l e go away. Not my cup of horror. Another issue being that the gorey and edgy theme of this game is great but never really gets its potential played in a way that I feel truly immersed and trapped in the asylum. I just have the thought that I play a levelforced idiot with breathing issues trying to get himself killed. I needed more logic and character development than jsut an silent protagonist playing down what the devs throw in front of me. It´s a nice and creepy adventure for some, but with the lack of actual tension I fear I will not be able to play more of this, not because it doesn´t get scarier but because I definitely know it won´t increase from my previous big guy hunts me, other guys hunts me gameplay, but also because I get blackscreen crashes for no reason in the most mood killing moments. My Immersion already died. I can not enjoy this despite the fantastic scary audio and atmopshere. It feels like a improved walking simulator. If you like the Hide n run patience games like this is, you will find Outlast to be the top notchest game out there. But for me true horror starts when I have to act freely and find myself helpless. Not , yeah just run to the locker, hide under this and wait. Horror starts for me where the unbelievable begins to haunt. This game is prediction after prediction sadly.

While the game has slightly too many jump scares and the story gets a bit hard to take seriously at the end, this is a real treat for any fan of horror games.
