A good Hidden Object game.

The story is a detective tale set in the 1930s with a female protagonist, who has to solve a supernatural disappearance. Puzzles range from standard hidden object finding to basic object combining puzzles, and nowhere do you have to backtrack more than one screen to find all items. None of the hidden objects are mislabelled either -- which is a common problem in HOGs -- so you don't feel cheated if you can't find it, it's always just because you overlooked it at first.

The downsides of this game are the speaking animations, or rather, the lack thereof, and the weirdly stilted voice acting. The male parts sound natural but the female voices are incredibly odd, as if they're run through voice synthesis.

The game is at most two hours long and doesn't contain scary or horror elements, so it's a good playthrough for anyone.

Game Information

The Dreamatorium of Dr. Magnus 2, is a HOPA* game, developed and published by Two Desperados.

This is the second installment of the series. The previous installment was "The Dreamatorium of Dr. Magnus.

*HOPA - Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure.

Game Visuals

I want to mentioned that the visuals for this game is nicely done. The visuals can be adjusted in the option menu.

Game Audio

I want to mentioned that the audio for this game is well done even its simplistic and somewhat repetitive. The audio can be adjusted in the option menu as well.

Game Voice Overs

Normally, I don't have any comments to say about voice overs in games. Since that they're generally decent. But it's a different story with this game. The voice overs in this game isn't so great. The voice actors/actress aren't interested in what they're suppose to be doing.

Gameplay

There are only four difficulty game modes to choose from: Regular, Advanced, Expert and Custom.

Diary Notebook it has two sections. Game Objectives and Notes.

There is an option for locking the inventory in place to keep it stationary.

There are interactive items in the game. These items are marked with a symbol but sometime they require extra items before they can be interact with.

The interactive map allows the player to fast travel between each location quickly. It also indicates there are tasks that needs to be done at certain locations. It isn't given automatically at the start of the game.

Magical Amulet it reveals certain events that had taken place before. It's like a memory residual.

Multi Tool device that three different tools that can be for certain tasks. Tools: Knife, Screw Driver and Scissor.

Most of the game's hidden object scenes consists of placing items back, fragments, shadow items with some or no interaction.

Most of the game's puzzles are fairly easy to solve without having the need to skip any of them.

There are collectible in the game. It is "Eye of Horus" they're scattered throughout the entire game to find. Twenty-two in total.

There are fifteen different achievements. But each of these achievements has certain requirements before they can be unlocked.

Miscellaneous

There extra contents (concept art and wallpapers) for the game in the extra section.

There are total of five different trading cards. You only get the three of those cards from the game. There are several ways to get the rest of the trading card: Purchased from Steam's Market; Trade with friends; Booster Packs and it's Booster Pack Creator.

Final thoughts, I've found this game enjoyable to certain extend. The replay value for this game is low. I would recommend this game but not at the full price.

As Hidden Object games go, this one probably isn't worth the time.

For those not familiar with the genre, HO games tend to have a semi-decent story, and generally involve finding objects to unlock further progress into the story - either by applying items directly to what you see in the on-screen scene, or by combining with other objects to make it work properly, or create something.

This game, while it has some beautiful scenes and art, doesn't deliver quite as much as you might hope for from a Hidden Object game.

For starters, there aren't that many scenes that require some thorough searching. Part of the fun of a good HO game is having lots of big messy scenes for you to hunt for a list of random objects from. The few that do exist in the game are spread pretty thin.

The point-and-click aspect is on the tame side as well. For example, there's a statue that needs reassembling at the front of a tall building. The arms were lying on the ground outside, and were among the first items picked up in this segment of the game. Later you find the last piece, a hat of sorts, is inside the building. Upon putting the hat on the statue, the hand reveals a key... a key that could have been acquired without assembling the statue? Yeah, I don't get it either.

I found the main character's voice acting to be sub-par too. It distracted me from the game, mostly in the form of my giggling and stifling laughter. She sounded like a total stoner, all slurred and dragging out her words... yet she was meant to be a private detective. Maybe she's both. It's plausible. Maybe.

So while you could get this game, I'd advise against it, until it's heavily discounted. Compared to others in the genre there just isn't enough content. What content there is I found too similar to elements from other HO games. Possibly ok if you're looking for an easy introduction to the genre though.

One of the best Hidden Objects games on Steam. Liked the story and HO scenes. Great puzzles.
Easy to lose track of time playing this game. Finished it in one sitting, from beginning to end.
Bought it on release day with the 10% discount. I believe it's totally worth the full price.
Highly recommended if you like HOG's. You surely will enjoy this one.

The voice acting performance for the main character is the worst I've ever heard in any game ever. It's really incredible. Otherwise, this game is short and not too challenging, but it's a solid HOG for what it is.

Short version: 68%
The Dreamatorium 2 is almost inexcusably short for its price, and the voice acting would make anyone cringe, but it looks good, has a handful of great hidden object scenes, and the storyline is interesting enough. Get it in a bundle.

Long version:
I have played a few short hidden object games before, but The Dreamatorium of Dr. Magnus 2 still surprised me with its barely 100-minute long play time.
At least it provides enjoyable content in this short while with a nice-looking artwork, plus some simple, yet entertaining puzzles. There aren’t many hidden object scenes, but they are well-made as well.

Unlike the first game, the story is not really about the Dreamatorium itself. In that game, somebody entered the machine and trapped in his own soul in it, so now we spend the sequel as his pawn, collecting the crystals necessary to open the door of his prison. This was a good excuse to feature several different scenery, but even this variety couldn’t help if the storytelling is ruined by an absolutely abhorrent voiceover.
Still, in the end, I cannot say it is a bad game, just a game I’d only play if I got it in a bundle of some sort.

If you like Artifex Mundi series, you will definitely like this game. Despite strange women voice acting, it's pretty solid and logical. Unobtrusive casual time killer with logical puzzles and point-and-click action. And yes, the help button. :)

I really enjoyed the game, although it has some minus points.

The story is a detective, with some mystical things. You can see in the past. And finding clues is just a part solving it. You have to puzzle your way through the game. The story is well thought off. With a disappearance and some (ghost?), ah well you will find out by yourself. They did it quite well, but it is missing some depht when it is about the characters. You will mostly read about what happened. But you will not encounter many. So you do not know there role. Untill you have read it, so don't skip the articles.

2 hours, watching all clips, is all that is needed to complete the game (all achievements). It's short, but well, who bothers if you enjoy it.

There is one thing that really bothers me. The voices of the female characters. They do not sound natural. More computermade. So that's a thumb down. But the males are good to listen too. Too bad you're a female.

A second small thing is how easy the game is. I've never had finished the puzzles and hiddenobjectgames to fast. Maybe I play them too much, but i find, in comparison with some of artifex mundi games, they are easy. If you just starting, this one is ideal.

If this does not bother you, you can enjoy the game. Otherwise, there are more difficult ones on the market.

For the music fans: I like it, and it didn't bother me in the game. It is well chosen, but i'm not you, so you might differ.

You're Iris Birdwood, a paranormal investigator in the '20, witnessing the abducting of a young woman. You meet Dr. Magnus, her (boy)friend, that was working on a secret project called Dreamatorium. So what's the evil spirit that is behind the kidnapping wants with that invention?

I suppose that this is a sequel from a first game but you don't really need the previous plot to understand this one. It's a nice story, with a spirit that seemed to urge you without even putting you in danger of anything.

The gameplay is the classic one for a HO game: puzzles, Hidden Objects scenes, collectibles to find, etc.. Yeah, true, sometimes, I had an hard time to find objects because I could mistake the answer with another. But else, even the puzzles weren't too hard. The presence of the amulet is a nice feature as it's strongly tied to the story.

The graphics are nice, even if it's only labs, mansions or streets - only the King Research Center was the odd building in that. The soundtrack was also fitting. The voice acting was also a success, though I would have preferred that the main character didn't sound like she was bored.

True, it's kinda short: only 2 hours for people used to play that kind of games, and knowing how to use a map. But I've enjoyed that game a lot despite my previous fear that it may not be a good one - I'm strongly influenced by Artifex Mundi's style and universe and HOG I've played in the past: Mystery P.I., Women Murder Club, Samantha Swift, Mystery Cases Files and Big City Adventures for example.

So in the end, The Dreamatorium of Dr. Magnus 2 is an excellent HO/adventure game, so, don't hesitate if you're a fan of these or if you want to try one!

Cute game. It's fun, although the story is a little silly. And the protagonist has quite possibly the worst voice acting I've ever heard.

This game's not terrible, but its downsides weight it down too much for me.

GOOD: The game looks pretty good in general. I think the music's fine, too - it's relaxing. The game also has a nice configuration menu, with a bunch of options regarding the gameplay.

MEH: The game in general is a bit too easy. It's not that long, and has no replayability.

BAD: The voice acting for the main character is really bad, and you'll hear her often, considering she's the protagonist. The antagonist doesn't feel threatening, as the protagonist doesn't seem to care. The story isn't particularly good either. A big part of the game feels like you're just searching for whatever random MacGuffin someone wants. The ending is a bit of a letdown - it leaves a bunch of questions unanswered.

Non-protagonist voice acting highlight: "Yay, I'm going to cut more boxes!"

On the whole, I can't overly recommend this game. I found it was too quick to complete, the story was rather bland, and the female protagonist's voice acting was atrocious. As a puzzle game itself, it was fine, but it was let down by poor execution.

In a nutshell:
Okay as an introduction to the genre, but no more than that. Not worth full price.
Nice art, watered-down story, easy puzzles/HOGs/achievements, ~2 hours to 100%.
If bad voice acting ruins a game for you, avoid this one. Even if you don't normally mind bad VOs, it's awful enough here to distract from the actual gameplay.

Main Gripe
I can usually look past bland or uninspired voice acting in HOPAs (Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure), and I seem to have a higher tolerance for it based on complaints I've read about other games. But the girl who recorded the protagonist's lines is atrocious. It reminded me of a school kid reciting a piece of literature in class with a stilted tone and improper enunciation. Or someone with no personality and running on 1 hour of sleep reading a fairy tale to children in a really. deliberate. way. so the kids! understand? every. word. Either way, whatever you can imagine, this girl's performance is worse. And while you may think that some voice acting can be so bad it's funny, this is not the funny-bad kind. It's painful-bad. I visibly cringed at many points.

The guy who does the ghost's voice is only marginally better, but the main character alone is distracting enough to detract from enjoyment of the overall game, which I honestly didn't think was even possible. So if you do decide to try this out, do yourself a favor and turn off the voice overs. Or all the sounds, quite frankly. The music is boring and SFX are nothing special. The "ding!" noise when you try to use the wrong item somewhere is particularly out of place and annoying.

Story/Writing
The story itself is uninteresting. Some guy made a machine having to do with dreams (what it actually does is never really explained), some other guy died in the process, a ghost is somehow keeping people in a trance (also never explained), all over a woman you know nothing about. It's up to you as some random detective chick to play "collect them all" with crystals to unlock "the final door" (TV Tropes, anyone?). Even the last cutscene doesn't explain anything, and it cuts off after a couple of unneeded and cheesy lines. It all just serves as a weak and shallow reason to run around unlocking cabinets and breaking into safes.

The writing and dialogue are okay, save for a couple of lines that seemed like a failed attempt at humor (like the odd "collectibles with an 'i'" quip). I didn't spot any spelling mistakes or ESL grammar errors. But all that doesn't matter much when the person reading the lines makes it sound like it's written badly. I think with a better voice actress the story might have been a little more engaging.

The psychic crystal aspect was underutilized. It could have been a way more interesting exposition hook than it was.

Puzzles/HOGs
The puzzles are unimpressive. You could probably 'button mash' and solve most of them by sheer accident. The only ones that actually require a bit of thinking are the backyard gate lock and the wall safe in the hotel. Most everything else all but shoves the solution in your face.

The hidden object scenes are boring, to say the least. Only one or two objects were mildly challenging to find, and even objects that require multiple-steps to reveal/complete were pretty simple. About a third of the scenes are fragmented object or "find [silhouette] then use it to find [another silhouette]" types.

There are hidden collectibles in the form of Eye of Horus symbols in every screen. They aren't directly indicated (other than the 1st one in the tutorial), but there's a symbol on the toolbar that's highlighted if you haven't found one in that location yet. It's an interesting idea, but simplifies it a bit much for such a short game. I could see the mechanic being far more useful for a longer game with more varied or difficult collectibles.
NOTE: Try to find the symbol as the very first thing you do in a new scene, because when you complete the objectives in an area (house, mansion, office, hotel) the game suddenly plunks you in the next location via the map with no option to close it or go back.

The multitool was a good idea, but I wish they made it part of the toolbar instead of an item you had to scroll through your inventory to find when needed.

Achievements
For 100% junkies, this is a good one to up your % score. The game practically throws achievements at you just for moving around. Don't get me wrong - I like achievement hunting too, but not when I see 2 or 3 pop up at once within literally <1 minute of playing, and I have no idea what I just did other than drag something onto the screen.

Conclusion
If you can get past the painful voice acting (or just turn the sound off), Dreamatorium 2 is a decent "beginner's" HOPA. It's short, easy, and gives a mild taste of the genre. Unfortunately it errs on the side of "the player might be an idiot" with puzzle design/setup, so don't look for any brain-busters here. It also has zero replay value, so if you still want to try it out I would wait until it's at least 75% off or in a bundle. The quality and length of the experience is not worth the full asking price.

The game that proves that one lousy voice actress can ruin an entire game.

Ok, not just that, but holy hearts that was bad. I'm usually not one to notice or be too picky about voices but this girl must have just gotten out of bed with a hefty hangover and had one readthrough for all the lines. The other voices are also not very good , and the standard isn't overly high with these kind of games.

The game follows a paranormal investigator (or soemthing) lookign for a missing girl and unraveling a story about a ghost on the way there.Really nothing special and if you bother to pay half an attention to the story in the pictures and writing you find during the game, it doesn't take long to guess the ending. For some reason this game is #2, the first one is not on steam.

The puzzles are not very hard; some times yo don't even have to do things in the right order for it to work out.

The game also throws you into a new location of the map with no warning, so igf you missed some collectibles in the earlier locations, you have to replay the game from the start. My game time is therefore one and a half playthrough of the game or so. Most other achievements are achieved in one playthrough as long as you don't skip puzzles.

TLDR; there are way better games in this genre. Buy on a big discount if you need it for a collection or something.

A very short, especially casual point-and-click adventure, "featuring" a ridiculously dialed-in performance, and yet I'm giving it a thumbs up because it's fun enough. Get it only if it's very cheap.

There's not much to do in this game, and the few puzzles are trivial. But what makes this game unfortunately "special" is its unbelievably terrible voice acting. The protagonist's actor obviously never had an acting lesson in her life, and probably toked up quite a bit before coming to the studio, where she had to read the script for the first time and only do one take. It's oddly charming, in a totally fourth-wall-breaking way. Add an utterly abysmal script and nonsensical story, and you're in for quite a ride.

Otherwise, many thanks to the devs for supporting Linux!
