Mayday Friday: "Big Patch, Big Testing, and BIG TOURNAMENT"

Squid changes, skyball changes, and more being tested right now!

Hello everyone,

Mayday Friday is back after its hiatus and we have a lot going on! As you've noticed we have an entirely new game mode that has a tournament coming up where you can win exclusive titles and eight copies of the game!

That's not all that's happening though, we are testing some new changes in the dev app. You can see them all here and get in on the action! Squids, mobulas, and Skyball will never be the same again!

Coming up is what our team is working on and our player of the week!

Alex:
Has been tracking down performance issues that were introduced when we upgraded to Unity 5.2, and investigating what we can do to fix them.  Also prototyping a couple of new Alliance weapons for the remaining factions.

Tom:
Working on Ambush and prototyping the new class Special Abilities for Alliance.

Eric:
Prototyping new guns for yesha and arashi.

Jerry:
Working on new UI. See a special sneak peak here

Matthew:
Press outreach, store marketing audits, and testing.

Last and never least, our player of the week!
Congrats to Deargdue for winning a free item of his choice.

While I do recommend the game, it is not as active as it once was two years ago. Server population hovers below the 100 mark, and you will be lucky to get a full lobby. New players get decimated due to the fact the only people they meet are veterans who have been playing for years. Highly enjoyable when playing with friends. Guns of Icarus has friendly devs and a great community of about 8 people.

9/10 wish people actually played this game.

Truly a hidden gem among the steam clutter. Seriously, this game needs more players. This game's community is surprisingly well-mannered and helpful, even to new players. Getting kills in this game feels earned and like you and your team truly accomplished something. Teamwork and Communication are KEY in this game and i encourage you to either go in with your friends with mics or do your best in text or voice chat with randoms.

Don't get me wrong, the game is very good and an amazing team experience, but... there's not that many people playing it. I would recommend it, but I'm afraid that you would have to wait extremely long queues to get to enjoy it.
If despite of what I say you want to acquire it, a microphone is recommendable to talk with the crew of your ship.

im not a fan of arena or pvp type games but this game is great because it focuses more on team building and strengths then it does on pvp it teaches yiu the importance of working as a team i dont recomend the game however for those wgi dont have mic's as this game heavily relies on voice chat all around this gsme is great and by far one of the only online communities that i have found to be extremely helpful to new players ans old players alike

This game requires coordination and teamwork. It fosters comradeship and requires leadership.

Pilots also have to have a sense of direction and the common sense not to fly straight into the sodding sandstorm. Or crash into mountains/wrecked cities/obstacles.

I love this game. It's fun, thrilling and does wonders for teambuilding with my community. The other players are friendly, helpful and fun to talk to, although you do sometimes get that bad egg who is quickly put in their place by others.

I have happily pre-ordered Alliance, and I'm keen on seeing what comes next for Guns of Icarus and the Royal Alexandrian Fleet Air Service (AFAS).

I have a lot of fun playing with my group of friends in this game, it has most of the things i look for in a game, a wonderful art style (im a sucker of steam punk/post apacolyptic), great gameplay, and temawork. great game if a few of your buddies join in on the floating choas.

Don't let the reviews claiming the player base is dead dissuade you.

This is an utterly amazing game. The graphics are fantastic, the steampunk style is on point, and everything is well balanced and put together, and immersive as very few other games out there can ever hope to be.
The games are quick and fast-paced, it will usually not require you more than 10 minutes to play through one.
You will need teamwork, excellent spacial awareness and leadership to achieve victory.
Cooperating with your allied commander is as vital as giving precise orders to your crew, and a microphone is basically mandatory. You do have keyboard shortcuts to broadcast basic messages to your crew though.
The devs are also amazing, they actively play the game and you can occasionally actually fight them and get free goodies from the store if you win.
What I recommend you do, to get past the problem of the sparse player base, is:
- Get in the queue to join a match, leave the game in the background and do something else until you get alerted that you have found a match
- Get your friends to play it. If you have two mates you can efffectively fully crew a warship, which will make finding matches exponentially easier.

Overall, well worth its cost.
Come on now, who has not dreamed of being a gunner on a steampowered airship?

I love the concept of this game and I love the style of the airships, but the game just isnt very fun anymore. It was fun the few months I spent playing it but i started to notice a trend as I got better and the community started to grow a bit. Good players. Most matches i got put into, their captains and sometimes their crews we pretty much all level 30s or 40s. Now i know people are better than me in video games and that sometimes matches will be challenging, but seeing all these high levels really discorages me because im currently trying to level up to get some of the neat cosmetics. I know i cant win every match but I just feel that the matches are very unfair. This is farther worsened by the small amout of new players joining the game. Most of the time these newer players are on my team, giving me a bigger disadvantage in battle. And yes i know your pretty much yelling at me say "theyre new players, theyre just learning the game" and i loving help new players and having a good refined crew. But sometime you got those who dont listen and my crew can only do so much to keep the ship alive. Then the problem comes back to the high level players that im up against. These players always know the right ship and loadout to win any match and I hope my crew can keep most of the ship working. But theres only so much they can do and most matchs, as captain, I just get steam rolled and it feels very unfair. Now I do realize that this game has a very small player base compared to tf2, but for me its hard to look past all the many pub stomps and see the fun in the game. I know im basicly just whinning about how I cant win because everyone else is better than me, but im just sad that this is such a good looking and interesting game, but it never feels worth it to play anymore. Alliance mode looks like it will make this game 10x better and im very excited for it, I even preordered it with the collectors edition. From what I played of the beta, this mode looks very fun and interesting, and I hope that these big battles againts AIs will fix the problem of having to be destoryed by high level players. When this alliance mode finally comes out, im probably going to play it constantly and I look forward to that, but right now the game just doesnt feel worth it to just play a match and lose without a chance. Im only down voting this game to hopfully get the attention of the devs to possably look into this issue of so many high level players, but I know that this is a problem that cant really get fix. Overall this game is great and needs more attention like overwatch or battlefield, I just want to voice that I would love to play this game more but it just doesnt feel fair anymore. So I hope that alliance mode comes out soon so I can rejoin everyone in the skies to play against those neat boss battles and play new maps.

Its a good game if you have three other friends to play with. Though the community is very small these days, under 500 people on most of the time now, used to be near 700 I think. If you have three other friends willing to play this game then go for it. If you dont have any friends then I wish you luck because a lot of those under 500 players I mentioned dont know how the game works or cant see obvious stratagies by the enemy.

As an example, the captian of my ship was trying to get our teammates to stay with us because the enemy was staying in the corner of the map only one point away from winning. Not knowing that it would be smarter to try and pull the enemys out of the corner by getting out of their range our teammate charged in giving the enemy team the win.

Also if you and your friends leave a lobby for some reason before a match starts then search for a new one odds are you might end up back in the lobby you left.

Otherwise its a good game!
