Control Help and Tips

Struggling with Abe and the controls?

Tip: One of the quickest ways to make the controls in New 'n' Tasty a little easier is by switching on the two 'old school' control toggles, which are off by default. These tighten up Abe's movement and make lateral hops much easier to pull off.

Once on, Abe will no longer run without the player pressing the 'run' button, and will hop to the side rather than straight up, making mines easier to leap over and distances easier to judge.

Re-mapping the controls:

New 'n' Tasty supports in-game remapping for controllers and keyboards.

To remap a controller, ensure the "Input Method" is set to Controller, and then go to "Button Layout" and select "Xbox 360" at the top to bring up a dropdown. From the dropdown, select "Custom" and then remap as needed.

Supported controllers:

Windows: Xbox 360; Xbox One; DualShock 4, Steam Controller; Logitech F310, F510, F710; XInput compatible. Others may be configured via in-game remapping tool. Please refer to minimum specs for other formats.

About This Game

Back To Oddworld

Explore ancient ruins, dodge carnivorous beasts and avoid trigger-happy guards as Abe, the original Oddworld hero in this lovingly recrafted, built from the ground-up and totally recooked take on the classic adventure Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee.

Once a happy floor waxer in Oddworld's biggest meat processing plant, Abe stumbles across his boss's secret plan to turn the factory's slave labor force into the latest in the RuptureFarms Tasty Treats line of novelty meat snacks. Abe now has to save his own skin from the grinders, but simply escaping the flesh farm is only the start of his Oddysee - for many dangers await Abe on his journey to discover his destiny.

Built from scratch from the ground up, enjoy new breathtaking visuals, enhanced audio and improved, deeper gameplay as New 'n' Tasty reignites the original Oddworld game using the latest next-generation technology.

Amazing new graphics

With art direction from series creator Lorne Lanning, Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty offers a view into Oddworld with fidelity never seen before. Fluid animation, new free-moving cameras and high resolution (up to 4K) visuals make RuptureFarms and the surrounding areas look incredible, creating the Oddworld that Lanning always wanted to see.

Revamped controls

Analog controls offer more subtle control over Abe, and new tricks like free aiming, the ability to drop grenades behind you and also sneak whilst crouching open up new avenues for stealthy tactics and inventive speed-running. Optional 'Old School' controls bring back hopping and digital movement too, so the Oddysee purists can get started with some familiarity.

Brand new areas, brand new secrets

From the murky grime of RuptureFarms to the expansive native lands of the Monsaic Lines, through to the vast temples of Scrabania and Paramonia, Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty boasts new areas, subtle gameplay changes and a few surprises. Fans will recognise the huge meat grinders, Scrab holding pens and cavernous caves, but there's more than enough that's new here to keep you on your toes.

I have enjoyed and loved the Oddworld series since the late 90's when I first got to run Abe thru the meat grinder. Now, nearly 20 years later I get to grind up Abe once more thru some messed up death scenarios.
I've completed Oddworld on the PS1, the PSP and since my computer could not run the game from steam, I had to buy and play it on my Xbox One. I don't doubt that the version are pretty much the same, I wish I could have used a PSX controller. No matter, I still love the Oddworld universe and can't wait for more products to come out of the Just Add Water studios.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee was the first game I have ever played. It introduced me to the world of videogames with a great ♥♥♥♥♥-slap.
Now, how does New 'n' Tasty stuck up? Let's see:

The game itself is a carbon copy of Abe's Oddysee, but with various improvements:
- The presentation is gorgeous: the levels open up and feel more like a coesive HUGE world. While Rapture Farms do loose some of its dark and gritty feeling, the rest of the world is really enhanced. The light, the colors, the level of detail of the backgrounds... It all gives us a very pretty game to look at.

- The gameplay is very similar to his source, but the controls have been slightly changed. I don't know if it was for the best, luckily you can switch back to the original settings, but it's going to require a little bit of tweaks.
The remake tries to improve on the terrible control response of the original, but I said "tries" because it all could have used a little more work.

- The sounds have also been changed from the original, which is a shame, for me at least, I prefer how Scrab and Paramites sounded before, they were a lot more memorable.
The soundtrack has been tweaked too but they're pretty much the same songs, with the same feeling.

Talking is an important gameplay feature in the game. The new voices are fine, and there's a lot more variety in how you can say a determined thing. This gives the characters a lot more personality and for me it's a really great improvement. I just LOVE how the Sligs sound now ("WHAT' UP, FOLKS!" "HERE, PIGGY PIGGY! <3" "AAAAH SUCKER!")

Now, a good remake should be able to bring an old game to a new audience, without alienating the old fans, and for me, New 'n' Tasty does exactly that:
For the fans, there's everything they loved about Abe's Oddysee, with the right improvements where it more needed it. The new art direction sacrificed the dark mode, but it enhanced the light spirit. Whatever you like it or not it's subjective.

But can New 'n' Tasty bring new fans in? That is hard to say: the market is a lot bigger now and a random guy who takes a look at this game could think this is just another 2d-ish indie platform. But it isn't. This is the remake of a classic, a classic that everyone should play, but if you're turned off by the old graphics and controls, you can allways point your sight at Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty.

I saw Oddworld : Abe's Oddysee when I was just mindlessly roaming the internet, and I immediately loved the game. I downloaded an emulator and started playing it, and it was fun, but really challenging! I then saw a remake for the game had just been on sale. I WANTED IT BADLY.

Anyways, here's my review.

Gameplay wise, it plays alot more smoother than the original Abe's Oddysee, speaking that New N' Tasty now uses models and such. But at times, it could really be tricky to tell where something will effect Abe or not, due to the fact that it scrolls across the level instead of the classing screen shifting. I don't mind this, and it does bring more action to the fast paced levels.
Here's the most important things that you'll need to play New N' Tasty.
A good computer, and a freakin' brain.
This game requires some real thinking. It's really easy to get stuck on something for a while.
This is basically a graphic enhancement of Abe's Oddysee, right? No, it's not.
The levels differ from the original alot, and this time it's much more easier. I like this change, because playing the original seemed a bit too challenging for me. ( I'M NOT VERY SMART. :P )
The only problem are the glitches. But I have no huge problem with them. The ragdoll physics aren't top notch, as Abe can look like he buried himself into the ground, or have a major spazz-out. And at times the ragdolls can break the realistic flow of the game. But that's just me.
But anyways, this game is really worth the buy. Just make sure your computer is strong enough to handle it.

This game has done a huge favour to honour its predecessor, it has beautiful streamline controls that compliment its fast paced gameplay and stunning graphics that sharply define the odd world of oddworld. If you liked Oddworld Abe's Oddysee, you will love this game. Also stay tuned for the remake for Oddworld Abe's Exoddus: Oddworld Soulstorm comming 2017.

Truly a great game, although it just lacks the special, somewhat dark atmosphere the old ones had, also the difficulty was drastically lowered even on the highest settings. If you want the true legendary Oddworld experience, then go and buy yourself a copy of the old school Oddysee and/or Exoddus.

Picked up this one remembering my fondness of the original. The gameplay and humour were satisfyingly true to the original but I found the responsiveness of the controls all rather slow and clunky, which made navigating some of the trickier obstacles frustratingly tedious. Amazing visuals, artwork, concepts but struggling through the interface made it very difficult to enjoy. I was disappointed.

Can't play movies without heavy stuttering due to crappy bink player. Developers don't really care for fixing the issue. I have been waiting for months and nothing has changed. I recommend not buying it.

There are a few good changes in New 'n' Tasty, but overall I think it's worse than it's predecessor.

Good things:
+ "Hey y'all": gamespeak option to talk to all Mudokons -> thank youuu.
+ Some of the completely hidden "how would I ever know that is there" secrets are telegraphed just the right amount by utilizing the 2.5D camera angles.
+ Better checkpoints/quicksave's to make the tedium of repeating things as you experiment way less.

Bad things:
- Lost the dull, bleak atmosphere of Rupture farms to a wash of neon and bloom.
- Certain puzzles we're changed (such as the motion detectors) and just made worse & boring.
- Bad sound balancing. Abe's voice is drowned out in cinematics by background sounds
- Worse sound effects
- Many of Abe's animations are too fast, and don't reflect the weight and realism that the original captured.

Overall, I think this version will be easier for newcomers to pick up, but sacrifices much of the cohesive artistry of the original..
