Miaoyan Wang

I am an associate professor of Statistics and Computer Science (by courtery) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I am a faculty affiliate in the Data Science Institute (DSI) , Institute for Foundations of Data Science (IFDS), Center for Demography of Health and Aging (CDHA). I was a Stanford Science Visiting Professor (SSVP) at Stanford and Lawrence Livermore National Lab (2025), a visiting faculty fellow at Simons Institute at UC Berkeley (2022), and at IPAM at UCLA (2021). Prior to UW-Madison, I was a joint postdoc in Computer Science at UC Berkeley and in Math+X at UPenn (2016-2018), PhD in Statistics at University of Chicago (2015), and BS in Math at Fudan University (2010).

My research lies in the intersection of statistics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science. I am the recipient of the NSF CAREER award DMS-2141865 (sole PI), NSF DMS-1915978 (sole PI), NSF EF-2133740 (UW-Madison PI), five best paper awards (with me as advisor) from ASA, IMS and NESS, and several outstanding researcher awards from communities ASHJ, IGES, ICML, and NeurIPS. [08/2023] Our work won the 2024 Lawrence D. Brown Ph.D. Student Award from the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS). This is the most prestigious PhD award given by IMS. Chanwoo will present the award-winning paper at 2024 IMS Annual Meeting in Germany. Congratulations to Chanwoo Lee.

[01/2022] Our work won the 2021 Best Students Paper Award - Honorable Mention by the American Statistical Association. Part of the work is accepted by AISTATS 2022. Congratulations to Jiaxin Hu.

[11/2021] Miaoyan Wang received NSF CAREER award. The CAREER is the NSF's most prestigious award in support of early-career faculty. The grant will provide a 5-year $400K support to Miaoyan Wang's group.

[09/2021] Two papers accepted. Congratulations to Chanwoo for his paper on nonparametric tensors being accepted by NeurIPS 2021. Congratulations to Jiaxin and Chanwoo for their paper on generalized tensor decomposition being accepted by the Journal of Computational and Graphical Statistics. This paper also won the 2021 Best Student Paper Award from the ASA Statistical Computing and Graphics Section.

[07/2021] Miaoyan Wang is awarded a collaborative grant through NSF's 10 Big Ideas: Understanding the Rules of Life -- Emergent Networks. The grant will provide a 5-year $3 million support to a multidisciplinary team led by Daniel Bolnick (PI), Tina Eliassi-Rad (co-PI), and Miaoyan Wang (co-PI).

[07/2021] Jiaxin will be presenting the award-winning paper as Student Paper Award at Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) . She has also been selected as the session chair for Software on Statistical Computing. Congratulations.

[05/2021] Miaoyan (virtually) visits the long term program Tensor Methods and Emerging Applications to the Physical and Data Sciences at Institute for Pure & Applied Mathematics (IPAM), UCLA.
