Our RabbiRabbi Laurie Zimmerman graduated from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Philadelphia, PA in 2003 and immediately began working at Shaarei Shamayim. At graduation she was awarded The Rabbi Devora Bartnoff Memorial Prize for Spiritually Motivated Social Action. She has served as a student rabbi in a variety of capacities in Reconstructionist and Conservative congregations, leading services, doing social justice work, and teaching adult and children's education. Rabbi Laurie has been actively involved in Rabbis for Human Rights both in Jerusalem and in Philadelphia, doing field work and editing a rabbinic resource packet for the High Holy Days. She has also worked as an interfaith chaplain in a trauma unit of an inner-city hospital, as well as in a Jewish geriatric center. Rabbi Laurie was a rabbinic intern for Greater Philadelphia Progressive Clergy, writing on issues of race, poverty, and public education. In her last two years of school, she served as the President of the Reconstructionist Student Association. Rabbi Laurie graduated with honors from the University of Wisconsin in 1996 and was a member of Shaarei Shamayim during her years at UW. While a congregant with Shaarei Shamayim, she served as our first children's education teacher and coordinated the Children's Education Committee. Shaarei Shamayim was her first introduction to Reconstructionism, and the community played an important role in her decision to become a Reconstructionist rabbi. E-mail Rabbi, 608-257-2944. None of us on the Coordinating Committee considers him/herself an expert on Judaism. We are learners and teachers, looking for a way to make Judaism more meaningful to us politically, spiritually, and personally. Participation is at the heart of our purpose. Consequently, we welcome your participation. Your talents and life experience are valuable to us. Please join us in our efforts to create a caring, egalitarian, and diverse community within a Jewish context; call us with your ideas, questions and concerns.
