First of all, I'm an engineer, a ham radio operator and I'm very experienced with configuring electronic devices. I have no relationship with Amazon or the manufacturer.

This camera is a fantastic value for $6. My original intent was to use it to monitor the various dials, screens, etc. of ham radio equipment, installed at my home, remotely over the web, from any place in the world. For this purpose it worked quite well with very little effort. In the future I'm sure I'll find other uses but what immediately comes to mind is a very small wireless nanny cam, using a Raspberry Pi computer and this camera. All for about $50. I could add a couple of servos and have pan capabilities for another $20. I think a Panasonic webcam is about $300.

I'm going to try it with Google+ video hangout next week. I use a communications quality headset for audio so I won't be reviewing the microphone.

Here are some tips to get started, in order from basic to advanced:

First of all the controls. The focus is the black ring around the lens. It will focus, clear and sharp, with very nice resolution from around 3" to infinity. Rotate the black ring slowly to adjust. the depth of focus is quite good. My current setting is from about 1 foot to the back of the house, about 50 feet.

The lights are controlled by the dial on the USB cord. Full on the effective range in a dark room is about 5 feet. (see posted photo) Supplementary lighting would be necessary if you need it.

Plug it into any USB port. I tried my camera with a 7 year old tablet computer with XP home, SP2. Wait for the camera to be recognized then click "My Computer" in the "Start Menu" under "Control Panel". "USB Video Device" should be in the file list.

Good VGA 640x480 camera with native Windows 7 support. 20.0M is the name is misleading. The camera has GC0308 sensor chip with 648x488 pixel array (3.4x3.4um 1/6.5" 25º 10bit 30fps).
Clip works fine as a stand, attachment to the monitor is challenging.
Cable is rather short (~1m) and rigid.

The image quality of this little webcam is stunning. I wish the cable could be a little longer for desktop. The clip works only if you have a thin screen (<1.5in) or a similar fixture to clip on. So in that sense, this product is indeed for laptop

TLDR version: Linux supports it. Buy this amazing product. Clip a little tough, although good quality clip. Mic Unrated.

I run Gentoo Linux, and after a quick kernel recompile to add the relevant driver (Device Setup -> Multimedia -> USB Multimedia...) , it showed up in lsusb as:
ID 05e3:0510 Genesys Logic, Inc.
The kernel driver it uses is: uvcvideo
A note: It is a lot easier to use a webcam if you use the Gnome Desktop. I have a problem with the Gnome Desktop, so I'm searching the Gentoo repositories for utilities that I can use with it, I'm sure I'll find something. This is LINUX!
It is UVC based. The kernel supports it. Go for it.
Edit: GUVCViewer is a program that records images, video, audio, and in general works very well for me. Amazing picture quality.

It is a full speed USB 2.0 product. It is focused by manipulating the black center thing, focuses just fine on my face when I'm 6 inches away, as well as sitting comfortably at about 2.5 feet away. I am uncertain as to the actual resolution, but it is quite good enough for web-chatting. Skype recognizes it, and Google Hangouts detects it (I don't like installing Google products, so I didn't actually test it).

The LEDs are quite bright, or quite dark... but by carefully manipulating the slider, it is possible to find a setting that is comfortable.

For the cost, this camera has pretty good picture and sound quality. It isn't the best by far, but it is definitely clear enough for things like skype

This camera was purchased for work, so I could Skype with my daughter who is abroad. After a small glitch hooking it up (my fault, not the camera) it is amazing. And it was so cheap, it was not even a thought. What a bargain!
