This is a very good hard drive, for this size and form factor. I was curious what speeds it got in read/write and could not find any benchmarks out there, so decided to run my own. First though, there are a few things about hard drive speeds: in general, 7200 rpm is faster than 5400 rpm drives, and larger drives tend to be faster than smaller drives (1tb faster than 500gb, all else equal) and desktop drives (3.5") tend to be faster than notebook drives (2.5"). However, as I'll show, this is very fast for a notebook drive. It is nearly as fast as my 1TB 7200 RPM 3.5" Seagate Barracuda.

This drive is interesting because it appears to be an updated version of the WD5000BPKX (http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Black-Notebook-WD5000BPKX/dp/B00DSUTWMQ/) which only released in January, 2015. It is $6 more at time of review, but has double the cache (32mb vs 16mb).

I ran benchmarks on all my drives here http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/171711

Here are the results (given as averages):

Western Digital 500GB 7200RPM 2.5" Read 164 MB/s Write 142 MB/s Mixed 141 MB/s
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM 3.5" Read 171 Write 153 Mixed 151

So it's nearly as fast as the Seagate, but what about compared to the older molder, the WD5000BPKX?
That drive is benchmarked here: http://hdd.userbenchmark.com/SpeedTest/3355/WDC-WD5000BPKX-75HPJT0
Though results vary, probably depending on the age of the drive, it seems pretty clear this version is much faster. The reports there seem to show the older model is closer to 110 MB/s.

I'd recommend this as a new drive, if you can't afford a SSD (which, of course, would be faster). And I think the extra cost over the older model seems worth it, too, since it seems to be faster. This may be due to the increased cache size.

Not as fast as an SSD, obviously, but far more durable in Linux environments that tend to write constantly and burn up SSDs like wax fireplace logs. I have a bunch of these in 24/7 operation with an accumulated ~120,000 hours of run time without a single problem. Not even ONE relocated sector. I've also found that the "Black" versions of WD drives tend to be better balanced with better motors and bearings, so they make less noise in operation. As of today, I can't even speculate how long these things last. Likely something short of "forever", but I don't know how much.

Nothing exciting about a 500GB hard drive. The 'Black' series is there best, by far, and comes with a 5-year warranty. I have nothing BUT WD hard drives (for file storage) and at last count, that comes to roughly 10 drives in three different computers. I use SSDs for boot drives and WD Black drives for file storage.

This particular drive is inside an external enclosure and is for backups only. So, it doesn't get plugged in very often and should last about a decade (at least). I'm a very loyal WD fan and would nothing else. You just can't go wrong with a WD drive. Good stuff.

After having a Seagate portable drive that broke on me and lost a good portion of my files, I decided that hard drives are no joke, and that I should just go with the best. After doing research, I decided Western Digital was it. Ever since, I have been a WD loyal customer, and have been recommending it to everyone I know. Haven't let me down yet. Owned this drive for a couple months. As expected, no issues.

I installed into a 60gb fat PS3 system and a 160 gb PS3 system. They work. I did have to shim the 60gb drive system. I downloaded the latest version of PS3 software to a usb drive and formatted both drives to fat32 before installation. I was also able to do a restore to one of the systems from an external drive that I had backed up to. Overall, not a bad experience.

I own a small computer repair business. For years I have been replacing all laptop hard drives with the Western Digital Black. The hard drives have worked well and proved to be reliable. Not so anymore. These laptop hard drives are failing at an increased rate. I have customers coming in who paid good money to have their hard drive replace only to have it fail catastrophically within 2 months. How do you tell a customer that their data is completely unrecoverable. The five year warranty means nothing, apparently.

Western Digital is cutting corners on the product that was supposed to mean "no comprimises" I've had two of these fail in the last week. I am done with Western Digital.

This thing preforms wonderfully!!! My computer boots faster, and loads more quickly now. Granted, that is because it's a brand new drive, but going from 8 to 32 mb cache is a big difference. It's quiet, and now all i ever really hear is the fan running.

Works better than OEM. Does what they say it will. But I don't store a lot on my drive, so if I had to do it over, I would get a smaller capacity SSD for the same money. Not a knock against this drive, just more space than I'll ever use.
