This is great for the money. I would actually give it 4 1/2 stars. The 1/2 star deducted, because the tray door popped off when I took it out of the package. However, I was able to pop it back into place. It seems like it sticks a little bit when I push the tray back in, but other than that it reads CD's perfectly and it's only a very minor imperfection.

I was very close to returning this CD-ROM, because my netbook wouldn't recognize it in any of the USB ports. If this happens to you, just have the CD-ROM plugged into your netbook before you turn the netbook on. After I did that it recognized the drive and played all CD's with no problem.

If you're buying this to install and OS or any kind of MS software onto your netbook, be advised that most of their software is on a DVD-ROM disc.

I bought this little gadget because my Dell netbook lacked a CD drive. I wanted a cheap plug in peripheral to listen to music from my laptop. Indeed I found it with this USB External Drive. It's light, sleek, cheap, and best of all, effective!

You may not like it because it requires two USB ports, one for power and one for data. I personally don't like it because IT DOESN'T WORK. The tray doesn't open. It tries. It tries hard. But the darned thing won't open. And that's an essential feature of any disc drive.

Update: Reading all the other one-star reviews, I discovered there's a cheat -- you can stick a paper clip into a slot to release the door. Stuck a CD in and guess what? It couldn't read the CD. Can I downgrade my rating to 0 stars?

I needed a CD-Rom for my Tiny ASUZ net book which I use when on a job away from home. The only use I have for it is to install or repair programs that are on A CD. I recieved it it in record time and was amazed at the size, smaller than some Jewel cases. I opened the box and plugged it in to my net book with the cables provided. It worked flawlessly. It is delicate and must be handled carefully and it is not too fast, but I could care less. I may never use it, as I normally store data on thumb drives. But as a back up system it is the best piece of hardware I ever purchased. The price was unbelievable. I have since recommended it to my friends who have net books with out a CD drive. I cannot say enough good about it. I love it.

I guess you get what you pay for. I hesitated then said what the heck since it was so cheap. Ug. I plugged it in, got an error on the screen "power surge in usb port," and the thing died. Tested on 2 other computers, nothing. Restarts, yada yada. I guess I was not one of the lucky ones that it worked for. I haven't yet decided how I am going to destroy it, whatever the method it will be violent. Or I might perform medical experiments on it without anesthesia.

I have tried for a few hours now to download software to my computer and this device doesn't read the disk available. Tried to copy a CD instead and still, no go. This product does not work. =(

I feel I have an obligation to write a review about this product in order to save others from experiencing my fate. It did not arrive with instructions. When I plugged it into my brand-new laptop, it turned on and off again. I thought, "here's an adapter outlet...maybe if I use a power cord from my iPod stand it will work..." I guess that was stupid. Anyway, as soon as I plugged it in it zapped my brand-new HP laptop. I called their customer service rep and while I was on the line my computer started SMOKING! They are sending a "security team" to pick up the computer and I'm stuck without a laptop for a few days. Needless to say I am returning this cheap product.
