I expect a lot from a computer. I expect a computer that can run heavier programs, still game, and doesn't hurt my already injured back with the weight. I switched from Toshiba to Asus and I must admit I was scared because my two laptops have always been Toshibas. I work for IT in my college and my boss told me if I wanted a quality computer that will last me and will be worth the investment, Asus is the way. They have a good brand name as it is and I took a leap of faith. It truly is worth it. When the hard drive began the ticking of death on my old computer, I looked into computers for a good 2 weeks. After all my research and using my own expertise on computers, I picked this one and honestly I love it.

Pros:
Fast
Large Memory
Free Windows Upgrade
Light Weight
Disk Drive
Handles Large Programs Well
Great Processor
Great sound

Cons:
Asus Webstorage is a bit annoying if you don't use it and don't disable it.
Graphics are okay but it's a basic graphics card

Conclusion:
This is a high quality laptop perfect for every day use, gaming, and heavy running programs. It's lightweight and easy to use. The brand is great so is the customer service that comes with the warranty they give you. The price is a steal for such a great product. You are getting your moneys worth and then some.

I will update after the Windows 10 upgrade after July 29th.

Can't really complain, so far...

I've only had my hands on this laptop for a couple of days now, but since it is in need of some reviews I thought I'd share my initial impressions.

The build seems good, it's sturdy and heavy, but not overly so. I despise windows 8 and can't wait for 10 to be released, but I won't hold that against the machine itself. It comes with typical bloatware. (Had to remove a trial of McAfee immediately.) The "ice cool" palm rest does as it promises, I can feel no heat from the computer even when asking it to run graphically intense games. The speakers have "sonicmaster" which I don't find overly impressive, but the sound is good enough. The worst thing about this machine that I've discovered thus far (besides windows 8) is the track pad. It's not terribly responsive, but that was easily fixed by a plug and play mouse.

So far, so good. I'll update at a later date as I've had more time to test things out.

A very average notebook that is almost unserviceable

I have considered purchasing this notebook for an older ailing Lenovo that has been very reliable for the last six years. I have read a lot of positive reviews and I have done a lot of research on this particular model. I have taken the time to go out to retail stores and physically look at this machine as well. If I purchased it, I would only buy it from Amazon.com as their customer service is incredible.

Here is my counter take to all the positive reviews: (I think people should know some of the negatives as well before buying this product)

Positives:
A lot of bang for the buck - new Broadwell Intel i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, USB3 ports, HDMI output, etc., DVD writer and for a reasonable price. It's also a nice looking laptop and I like how they have textured the plastic to keep finger prints down. It's also nice that you get a 1 year accidental breakage warranty for free. More on the warranty later.

#1: It has a 500GB 5400 Hard Drive. This is a crippling component for such an otherwise fast notebook. ASUS could have at least put in a 7200rpm drive for a few bucks more or even a hybrid SSD/HDD drive for just a little more. Many people don't realize it but you are typcially waiting on your hard drive to retrieve data most of the time. It doesn't matter how fast your processor is if it has to wait on a pokey hard drive all the time. The net is you end up with a poor performing laptop due to this one component.

So you say, "no problem" just go out and buy a Solid State drive and replace it. Not so fast! First you can't get access to the hard drive without tearing the entire machine apart. What does it take to do this? First you need to remove all the screws from the bottom of the case.Read more ›

I love it. The item starts up very quickly and can handle multitasking very well. It runs quiet overall and runs cool from the bottom. I haven't had a hot lap yet with a 3 hour use of web browsing and photo editing. I installed windows 10 immediately upon starting up the laptop for the first time. Everything installed smooth and runs smooth. From my understanding this is not the lightest laptop nor the heaviest. But its still very comfortable to carry around and have on your lap. I will admit that the exterior laptop quality of material used is not the best or even close. The keyboard does have flex in it, and plastic comes to mind for everything but the hardware. However I understand that for this price range of $575.00, I was more interested in having the 8 GB ram, 1 TB of hard drive space using an Intel I7 processor. I use my laptop for home use and for when I go on vacation for photo upload use. So this review is for the average user. The screen resolution is not the best. However I am fine with it and I am not a screen pixel buff. The screen resolution is identical to my old 2007 acer laptop which I never thought had a bad picture. I hope this laptop will give me another 8 years of solid use. My old acer is still running strong with the original battery but it was time I upgraded to 8GB of Ram which my old one which had 2 GB of ram. Wow what a difference. So if you are looking for laptop that will handle just about every use not including heavy gameplay, I recommend this laptop. I was willing to give up build quality for hardware specs. So using the laptop the past week I am very happy with my purchase. I will just have to be very careful not ever drop the thing.
