After reading both the positive and the negative reviews on this site, I was not certain what to expect when I ordered one of these new ASUS laptops. Overall, I'd say that the laptop deserves a positive review. There are some components (most notably the keyboard and the webcam), which are not particularly great, but at this price range (500-550 USD), this is a pretty decent buy.

Some users report problems right out of the box. I was perhaps lucky, but I had none such except that the laptop did not sync the date and time automatically, which led to all browsers displaying "security certificate" messages, until I manually synchronized the Internet time. Other users were upset because of the way in which the hard drive was partitioned. If you have never bought a laptop overseas (this machine has an international warranty and seems to have been targeted to a variety of countries), you might find the partitioning strange. Basically, the 1 TB hard drive is broken down into two: a 370-GB "C" drive (where the OS, Windows 8.1, is installed), and a 540-GB "D" drive, which presumably you will be using for your media and work files, etc. There is also a 20-GB hidden partition that contains the factory recovery image. I am particularly pleased by this division because if something happens to my OS partition (a bad Windows update, etc.), my files, which remain on D, won't be affected if I need to reinstall the OS.

Other observations: the screen is bright and has no bad pixels; the sound is average in terms of loudness; the CPU is relatively fast and the machine is overall responsive (it was slowed down a tad after installing right away about 80 updates from Microsoft, but still works pretty quickly).

Excellent build quality - feels more expensive than it is. I take away one star for the low resolution screen (1366x768) and lack of 5 GHz networking, but everything else is top notch. Great keyboard for typing and fantastic specs for the price. Performance is right in line with what one would expect for a Core i5 with 8 Gigs of RAM. For those who typically buy $300 laptops, spend the extra money and get a lot more value for your money with this machine.

BUY IT! I needed a laptop to carry from school, to work and to help me out when I start college. As a senior in high school with a demanding internship I needed something to run Photoshop, AutoCAD, SketchUp along with your every day web surfing. This computer has not disappointed me for the week I've had it. Everything has ran INCREDIBLY smooth. The price? Oh! You get more than what you pay for.
2 3.0 USB ports, 1 2.0 port, a DVD drive, an i5 processor with 8GB of RAM?! This is amazing!

Now.. there is a few things worth mentioning that some of you may need to hear, the keyboard is not that "AMAZINGLY" built. It is a slight disappointment, the whole plastic part that surrounds the keyboard sinks in when you press certain keys hard (not noticeable at all if you're just typing normally with little pressure.) The DVD drive gave me a scare as for some reason I couldn't get it to open.. but it works.. I was just not pressing it correctly. Don't give up, haha. Another thing worth noticing is I am not using the trackpad, I use an AmazonBasics wireless mouse, so I cannot comment at all on whether the trackpad is good or not. The webcam camera is just horrible, but it is not something I ever planned to use. You will most likely have a camera 2x better than this on your smartphone's front screen camera.

In conclusion this is a MUST BUY. I bought this before there was any reviews or recognition for this laptop anywhere online. I took this risk because of the amazing specs and I am not one bit disappointed in spending $500 on this. It is a MUST BUY!

I had very high hopes for this laptop. In some ways this laptop reminds me of the controversy around the 2012 Honda Civic, where low cost to produce became the primary focus rather than quality and *especially* end-user experience. Let me tell you how this laptop disappoints.

And keep in mind that this same configuration appears to be listed/marketed as the following different model numbers (matching ASUS declaration of conformity to the FCC filed May 12 2014):
- X555L - ASUS X555LA-DB51 15.6-Inch HD Laptop (Black)
- A555L
- F555L - (this listing on Amazon)
- K555L
- R556L

Matte Screen - in this case code word for 'narrow viewing angle' and 'fuzzy'. Yes, something about this screen is just, well, not crystal clear. I really do prefer matte screens but this one is a little uncrisp.

Video Display on External Monitor - I've adjusted the ClearType settings in the laptop numerous times while viewing on a Dell U2412M LED Monitor, but this Intel HD4400 display adapter paired with Windows 8.1 is just not doing it. It reminds me of the video output from a Dell Mini 10v of a few years ago. (I compared the output between two other laptops and this ASUS on this monitor Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24-Inch Screen LED-lit Monitor. The ASUS output on the same monitor is also noticeably 'fuzzy' while the Dell and Samsung are crystal clear.

Chasis materials - The overall feel of this laptop is a little on the flimsy side.
