Really great but not perfect!!!

I must say that i found out (rather late, i don't keep an eye on the ROG forum regularly) that there is an update for the speaker drivers which apparently fixes the issue with the speakers. As it is, the problem seemed to be that the laptop was seeing the speakers as the sub woofer and vice versa (hence the left sided sound). I personally find such a mistake by ASUS incredible and unbelievable.

The new driver actually helps quite a bit. The sound is not left sided anymore. It seems to be a little more clear for me, but results may very. Now doesn't start to distort at 30% but at 70%.

Finally i must say that the laptop definitely sounds a little better although i still find it weak for a laptop of this price range. But the fact that this was even an issue makes me feel extremely uneasy about ASUS quality control or for that matter makes me wonder if they even tested the units before launch to see if there were any issues, i think it anyone would have picked on up and tested a unit, it could have been easily solved. Due to this, i am keeping my review as it is.

Wonderful Laptop!

This laptop is amazing. I am not a gamer so I can not comment on that. I purchased this for intense photo editing, video editing, and crazing amounts of multitasking with demanding programs. So far, it has been very fast and the laptop has quietly handled everything. I consider this to be the best laptop on the market at this moment. If I had the luxury of waiting, I would have waited for the 15 in version. The 17 inch is a beast...huge and heavy!

Cons
location of bluray drive (I accidentally open it 10x a day. Frustrating.)
Had to disable most Asus Gestures. Got tired of stuff popping up all of the time, especially Win Charms.
Weight (I will probably not leave the house with this thing. too heavy.)
power supply connects to laptop loosely but my targus adaptor fits GREAT

I've had this laptop for about 3 weeks now.

It is premium quality and a delight to use. There are only two things about it that I would change:
1. I would like to be able to bend the screen a little further back (right now it goes to about the 100-110 degrees.
2. The escape key should be swapped with the recording button, or the recording and macro keys should be moved to the right.

These are extremely small issues.

I've so far played the following games on ultra settings with maximum AA/HBOA/etc.:
Battlefield 4
Battlefield 3
Battlefield: Bad Company 2
Mass Effect 3
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Titanfall
Many others that would obviously play well given the above.

I'm an engineer, so I use a variety of IDEs. I've used the following software (most of them simultaneously) and they were all extremely responsive:
Android Studio (this is quite a hog)
Google Chrome with like 50 tabs open (don't judge me)
Photoshop CS2
Visual Studio Pro 2013
CooCox CoIDE (eclipse based ARM IDE)
Google SketchUp
Digilent Waveforms
Saleae Logic
DesignSpark PCB 7
Sketchbook Pro 6
MPLAB-X
Other small stuff.

Really happy with the connectivity on this thing. 4 usb 3.0 ports is great when you have to have multiple development boards hooked up at once with a mouse or phone, etc. Full size HDMI and a gigabit ethernet port are excellent additions too. I keep accidentally opening the blu-ray drive every time I move the laptop. Haha, I'm getting used to it, though.

The power adapter is not "magsafe" or anything like that. It's a standard coaxial type connector.Read more ›

The screen looks good, no dead pixel found after 1 week

Outstanding All-Purposes Laptop

Pros: The performance, not just gaming, but overall.
The design. Looks solid, tough, and stylish.
The screen. The screen looks good, no dead pixel found after 1 week.
The battery life. As a gaming laptop, I don't expect it has long battery life. But this battery exceeds my expectation

Cons: I don't like two designs.
1: the keyboard. The letters on the keys are hardly to see without keyboard light on. I know I can turn on the keyboard light, but for keyboard itself, the key is black, but the letters on it are dark red. It is even hard to see it in the room during daytime.
2: the touchpad. The touchpad is designed too big. If the users have two relatively big palms, it is easy to touch the touchpad "accidentally" when typing. Even I try to leave my palms away from the touchpad, if I don't lift my palms high enough from touchpad during typing, the touchpad still can sense it which leads to the movement of the cursor. I think the dimension of the touchpad should be reduced. Is it able to disable the touchpad? It makes me unconformable during long-time work since I have to keep my palm high enough from the touchpad.

Other Thoughts:
I have purchased this gaming laptop for 1 week. It is actually my first gaming laptop. I always doubt the gaming performance on "gaming" laptop, but I finally decide to give it a try after I read many reviews about it. In the past 1 week, I am really satisfied with this laptop.
