I was looking for either a new laptop, 2-in-1, or MacBook to do things that just aren't possible on my iPad. After weeks of searching, I took the plunge with the ASUS TP500LA, which was half the price of the MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display I had downselected as the other finalist.

I am very happy with the ASUS - very nice looking, excellent build quality, great keyboard layout, and setup at home was the easiest I have ever experienced with any computer . Despite reviews of ASUS sister products claiming the Wi-Fi is slow, the Wi-Fi on my unit is crazy fast, display is outstanding, boot up is about 15 seconds, power down is about 5 seconds.

I'm not a huge fan of Windows 8.1, but I got around that by installing Stardock Start8, a $5 program with a 30 day free trial that emulates Windows 7 but give you the flexibility to access the Win 8.1 interface if you want.

Only cons: No backlit keyboard, battery life is 5-6 hours (9 for the MacBook Pro), a tad heavy at 5 lbs (3.5 for the MacBook Pro), but you know all of this going into the purchase, which for me, was worth saving $800.

Amazon shipping was amazing - I chose the 1 day option ($7 for Prime members), which shipped from CA at 8 pm the night before and arrived at my doorstep in CT at 2 pm the next day (how the heck do they do that for $7?).

Anyway, no regrets at all for this purchase - would do it again in a heartbeat!

Works great, looks great, very flexible.

Weakness: i5 processor - wanted the i7, but that's not available with the 1080p resolution. Keyboard feel is weak with very short key travel and keys spaced a little too far apart. Windows 8.1 (Windows 10 will be out soon and should solve that). Slow hard drive limits the speed of the entire unit.

Strengths: Almost no crapware! Fully convertible in 15.6"! Good selection of ports and great screen. Almost desktop replacement level machine. Easy to change the hard drive to SSD or Hybrid. NOTE: Running drive cloning software prior to changing to a different drive requires a change in the BIOS that is not obvious. Contact me for details.

I really like this computer. I searched for weeks to find an appropriate portable for my needs. This did it and is only limited by the i5 and slow drive. One can be fixed, the other cannot. I know you will enjoy this computer.

The Good and the Bad - ASUS poor Quality control

This is my initial review after only having this laptop for a few days. I did an detailed search for a good replacement notebook and ended up purchasing this laptop for better or worse.

When I first received the laptop I heard rattling inside the case. I took the bottom panel off, (when replacing the HDD with a Solid State drive I found two loose screws and pieces of plastic fragments on top of the motherboard just rolling around. I didn't see any missing screws, so whoever assembled this laptop must have dropped them inside and never bothered to check for anything loose before putting it together. It's a good thing it didn't short something out. Bad quality control ASUS!

This is a very nice looking notebook. It has an aluminum display back and what looks like aluminum where the keyboard is. It's actually just plastic. Everything else is also plastic. The problem with the metal plating on the back of the display is that it is a finger print magnet and they are very difficult to remove. The metal is just for show and really doesn't add to the build quality vs. a laptop that is all plastic.

It has a very fast Intel I5 processor which is crippled by the very slow Samsung 1TB 5400rpm hard drive. You can replace the hard drive with a solid state drive by taking the bottom panel off and carefully prying it past the locking tabs all the way around the frame. I used a thick guitar pick and the bottom panel came off rather easily. There are 4 screws holding the HDD caddy in place. Once I replaced the HDD the performance was a monumental improvement. It's obvious the CPU was constantly waiting on the slow drive, making this laptop feel really slow. Boot times before were easily over a minute and after, with the SSD, it booted in less than 8 seconds.Read more ›

I've only had it for a couple of weeks but it is much faster than the Samsung it replaced. I really like using the tablet feature. The only negative has been seemingly less battery time which is not really any issue for me. My wife likes it well enough that she has ordered the Intel 7 version for herself.

The excitement I had to get a top of the line touchscreen notebook quickly ebbed as the wireless card in the laptop died within 24 hours. No recourse except to send it to ASUS for repair which is leaving me without a notebook (ASUS did not offer an exchange, only a repair - despite the fact that I had purchased the notebook less than 72 hours previously). In their favor, they did pay for shipping (FedEx Ground), but now I have to wait until they get the laptop, diagnose the issue, and return it. I'm not sure how long that is going to take.

Being more than a noob at computers, I tried just about everything to figure out if it was something I was doing - reloaded drivers, uninstalled the device and reinstalled it, shut down the computer and restarted, connected via wired connection (that worked fine), and finally installed a USB WiFi which worked flawlessly. Final diagnosis: the wireless card is faulty - called ASUS who told me to return the laptop for repair.

Very disappointing quality control so we'll see how it goes when I get the notebook back from repair (I will update this review when it comes back).

My recommendation at this point is beware this may not be the notebook that ASUS wants you to think it is.

UPDATE:
Sent the laptop to ASUS for repair. They replaced the 802.11 G/G/N board, but didn't try to replicate the problem using the new board, if they had, they would have seen that the replacement is just as bad as the original. Sad to say if you want a fast internet connection, do not buy this laptop since you will have to invest in an external USB WiFi in order to actually use it.
