This is an excellent entry-level laptop with decent performance, a nice bright screen, and a light footprint at about 5 pounds. It also has a smaller a/c adapter sort of like an iPad instead of the older style "bricks" which is nice - I'm surprised it's taking manufacturers so long to copy Apple's lead in the small a/c adapter area. The keyboard does feel exceedingly cheap (much cheaper than my $299 HP Chromebook) and the entire keyboard vibrates as you are typing. If you push down on the "G" key with normal force, you will see that entire part of the keyboard (T,F,H,V,B) sink in which is a little disconcerting. The keyboard is definitely the weak link in this system. ALSO, it pays you to shop around.... there is a major price war going on and I was able to buy this at a local office supply chain which matched the price at the big box electronics store down the street....both of which were significantly less than the current price here on Amazon. ONE MORE TIP: There are two models of this computer that are identical EXCEPT one has a DVD player and one does not. As of this writing the one without has been hovering around $200 and the one with the DVD player is around $220. It is very easy to get them confused as they have the same box and almost the same model number, so be sure to look for the full model number when you are searching: X551MAV-RCLN06. Both boxes will say "X551" in big letters but you have to read the small print next to the serial number to make sure you are getting the correct one. I ordered this one and was shipped the non-DVD drive unit by an Amazon seller and had to return it.

Wow, this keyboard is really cheap.. I'm typing this review on it and it keeps dropping letters as I type.

I never write long, drawn out reviews because they are boring to read and I'm not always convinced they give out more information than can be achieved with an abstract. However, this warrants a long winded review because I was so impressed with this bad boy!

I haven't had a properly functioning laptop in years so my review might be a little biased, but I LOVE this laptop! It is fast, runs silent, doesn't overheat, has all the ports I need, has the CD/DVD drive, the batteries last forever, (in comparison to what I am used to,) I love that there is a one-part power cord as I don't have to lug around the giant clunky things. It also charges very quickly, and that is nice when outlets aren't overly accessible.

I found that it was easy to learn and get used to Windows 8.1, ( I was previously using Windows XP, I told you it had been years!) I was dreading this as I kept hearing just how much a nightmare Windows 7 was. I do find myself reaching out and touching the screen out of habit of having only an Android phone and tablet to work off of and I imagine that I look rather silly as I continually tap a screen that was never designed to react and becoming increasingly frustrated until I remember that there is a track pad for that. Not really related, but I am so happy to have a proper word program and whatnot again.

One of my favorite features is the full keyboard. I really missed having the 10 key touch pad on the side and having the function keys more spread out. Also, the buttons have a satisfying resistance and "click" so you know that you've depressed the button properly. The settings are easily changed without extreme navigation away from whatever you are doing, an amazing innovation that I have been begging for since computers have existed.

I just found the laptop came with a screw missing! I guess that's what causes the intermittent malfunction of the USB ports. I trusted the quality of ASUS.:(

This is an awesome bargain level laptop. I got it at a computer store for 178 for a college bound student and I couldn't be happier. It has all the features needed for basic college purposes of writing papers and internet. What won me over was the included dvd drive. In researching I found that a lot of manufacturers are eliminating this feature. The laptop seems bigger than 15" which surprised me. The keyboard feels good and easy to type on. The touchpad is spacious, but the seemless buttons have a loud click. Sometimes you have to press harder than usual. The computer is super quiet and after being on my lap for over a two hour stretch it was not hot or even warm. The speakers are above average, loud and sound really good with headphones.

This computer doesn't have bluetooth or cap/num lock indicator lights. Also, it only has two usb ports which can be easily remedied by purchasing an inexpensive usb hub. The webcam is low resolution too. However my more expensive dell webcam is subpar too. To remedy this purchase an external webcam. I could care less about gaming so I wouldn't know how this would hold up for games.

I've only had the computer for a short time, but so far I'm not regretting the purchase.

The audio sounds like the speakers are cracked. Tried Asus support short answer reinstall audio drivers told them I did. Then they said take it back to the store I purchased the laptop from. Can't only had 15 days once opened, purchased on 09/08/2014 gave it to my son in college on 09/20/2014 (he attends college in another state). Would not buy any products from Asus ever again. No support, no service centers and reading repair complaints online seems you really do get what you pay for. Lesson learned.
