Pros:
Amazing i7: powerful and can handle a lot. Quad-core is awesome.
Lots of memory: 1TB, partitioned single 5400rpm hard drive.
Sharpish screen, for its resolution: Screen and colours look satisfactory for basic uses.
Nice look, feel, and keyboard (unfortunately the keys do not light up, however.)
8Gbs of RAM is nothing to complain about, and most tasks will never take me over 70% usage.
Great Price! In comparison to the $2,000+ Zbook 17 and the $2,000+ MacBook Pro 15" & 17" this is an awesome price-friendly alternative that definitely falls short in some areas, but delivers in most of them.

Cons:
No thunderbolt ports: only USB 3.0 and 2.0, which isn't a huge deal.
Hard to customize internal parts, you have to take off the entire backing, and everything is very tightly put together, customizing/replacing/upgrading parts can be difficult. Also not a lot of room for upgrades... Only one hard drive port/space, and the RAM would need to be upgraded to from two 4GBs to two 8Gbs which is pretty expensive.
Not 1080 screen, incapable of 1080HD native, not a huge deal though for MOST people (not video editors and enthusiasts). Screen looks fine otherwise.
Bad battery life: I leave this computer plugged in as a desktop basically, so not a big deal, but hard to work while mobile
Slow hard drive: And replacing to a SSD is difficult considering there is only room for one hard drive in there, so you would need to backup all media and heavy storage on an external... Which makes working hard while mobile.Read more ›

Price to value is very strong!
I'm a sound snob, and was disgusted by the poor sound quality of the older Asus models. I was expecting the same thing with this model, because it's half the price of my older model, but was very surprised with the quality!! The volume is great, louder! The sound is very crisp, not muffled like my older Asus. You can't ask for more from a 700 laptop!
The trackpad has also improved. 2 finger scrolling is smoother now. Not as smooth as an apple, but better than a lot of windows computers.
The design is beautiful! Very thin and lightweight! Fancy stainless steel body, not cheapo plastic like most dells. It looks better than the picture! From looking at the picture, I thought the white part would be plastic, but it's actually metal! Extremely good value!
The screen is also very nice, smooth black shiny screen. It's not a matte screen, which I dislike because of the grain and hardness.
The hardware is also amazing. It's hard to find an intel i7 haswell in the 700 range.

While the processor is good for video

I've owned this laptop for six months. This is the third machine. That should tell you everything you need to know. But I will add these details.
While the processor is good for video, most other machine functions stall. The screen is glitchy. The processor hangs. It is surprisingly slow for a "fast" machine. The connection ports are cheap. For a multimedia laptop, you would think they would have a robust headphone jack. It's cheap, flimsy and often disconnects internally. This is the third such jack I've had to install. And plugging in earbuds is a process. It requires an authorization screen which means every time you're watching something and the earphones decide to quit, you have to leave what you're watching, reauthorize "headphones" and return. It's a joke but on the user.
The keyboard is mediocre at best. The keys look strong in photos. But in use, they are oddly spongy. They are prone to mistakes which is really a bummer. The amount of time I've had to waste fixing keyboard errors cuts into productivity. If you're thinking about using this for word processing, think again. I warn you. You won't like it.
My worst comments I save for Windows 8.1 While this has nothing to do with the machine, per se, it comes loaded with it. It is the worst operating system I have every had to deal with: opaque, decidedly not user friendly, non-intuitive, needlessly complicated to drive you into every Microsoft corner they have. For Microsoft, it might be a good thing. If you are anything other than a casual user, it is a nightmare.
I would never recommend this machine to anyone. Further, I have serious questions about ASUS customer service on any of its products.Read more ›

The thing I love most besides everything is, the fact that you get a one year accidental warranty for free through ASUS! Very Happy with this purchase, I have had really bad luck with Dell, HP, and was deciding between this and a comparable Acer, very happy that I went with this.
