Sad. I bought TWO of these. Once for each of my daughters. The touchpad on NEITHER machine worked. I had an extra wireless mouse so I went through the process of setting them up and updating their drivers. Said drivers were up to date, so I manually installed the most recent driver for the machines manually from the ASUS website. Restarted as instructed, no touch pad. (I also toggled the FN-F9 key to see if the touchpad was locked...nope) Remember this is on 2 out of 2 laptops. Pretty long odds for a duplicate problem.

I began searching for a support solution online and came across a review on another re-seller website where a person had submitted a review after experiencing the same issue with a defective touch pad. Hmmm....this sounds like a systemic problem.

Thankfully Amazon will take them back. But I won't get back the four hours I spent figuring out a problem I'm pretty sure that Asus was already aware of. In my mind they had two options a) recall the faulty products or b) figure out a software patch that would remedy the problem.

Previously I had no beef with Asus. I use a mini-tablet of theirs on a daily basis. But experiences like this explain how a brand gets ruined. Buy this laptop at your own peril. You've been warned.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
To get to the heart of this review: This ASUS laptop is a perfectly decent, middle-of-the-road laptop with a massive display. It is far from the fastest around but should be fast enough for most basic needs. It is NOT hardcore gaming laptop. It does have a very nice screen for watching movies on and working on spreadsheets and word processing tasks.

In more detail:
Positives:
+ Trackpad - (I list a big negative below too, be sure to read that). The trackpad is BIG and they placed it correctly so that one can touch type without brushing their wrists and thumbs on the trackpad. It is very responsive and generally "just works". There is a slight "wobble" or secondary click that irritates me a little when physically tapping it. It almost feels like the plastic "pad" part of the trackpad is just slighly elevated above the part that registers the push of a click. So, whenever you tap it, you feel and hear the click twice. Difficult to explain and not a big enough problem to warrant removing a start, but it's something that I notice.

+ HUGE screen - I'm used to working on a 13" screen with my other laptop and this 17" makes the other look puny. The downside to this is that the 17" ASUS is a significantly larger laptop itself and just barely -- barely -- fits in any of my backpacks.

+ Power Adapter - The power adapter is TINY. This is actually really nice. I mentioned my backpack for carrying above. Well, my 13" HP laptop has a rather large power brick that it uses. If I carry both the HP laptop and the power brick they occupy almost the same space and the 17" ASUS laptop itself. Since the ASUS's brick is about the same size as a mobile phone USB wall charger, it just slips into any open pocket in my backpack.

Not sure how many stars to give this computer. I am on my 4th one.
I got the first from Amazon, and the screen was fuzzy, like it wasn't connected tightly maybe?
So I returned it and got #2. The touchpad didn't work. Attached a USB mouse and found that the computer knew it should have one, but that it was "disconnected". I wasn't opening a brand new computer up, so I returned it for #3.
#3 got here a day later (Amazon's return shipping was amazing!). Opened it up, touchpad didn't work, so I sent it back.
I was ready to give up, but I figured things happen in 3's so I'd give it one more chance.
#4 got here, and the screen was clear, the touchpad worked, and I was ecstatic!
After several hours of setting it up, I got to the CD loader, and couldn't get it to open with the button. It's really cheap, and rarely works. However, this is easy to work around with using the "eject" button from the main screen.
But I should NOT have to have spent a week doing QA for ASUS. It is ruining their brand name!
I guess all PC manufacturers are too busy being cutting edge and don't care about quality anymore.
But I've been on the 4th one now for a few days, and I'm happy with the memory and CPU performance.
I even figured out win8 (You HAVE to download the "start menu" program from CNET to make it like Windows 7, but it's worth it.
All the Microsoft bloatware that comes with Win8 is slow, stupid, and sucks, but that isn't a problem with ASUS.
I don't know why someone would want their computer to act like a smartphone, and the emulator to make it such is evidently quite a beast, because it's SLOW to use any Microsoft Windows Appstore apps.

Also, the 1 TB drive is partitioned into 400GB for C: and 600GB for D:.

Well to start off i got it on the second day so shipping was great! I have been using this laptop for about a week nonstop i haven't had any heating issues and the battery last quite long! everything boots up fast and because of it being hooked up to my google account everything from my last computer was easily transferable. I would recommend this computer to anyone especially as a casual user!
