Another trustworthy Acer

I've had this laptop for over a month. It is my second Acer- my last one being an i3. It is a solid, well-built device, capable of running multiple programs simultaneously even with only 6GB of RAM. I usually have Photoshop and video running, plus multiple other applications open in the background with no lag. However, I highly recommend uninstalling Mcafee, which it comes with and bogs everything down to an infuriating crawl. I have also owned a Toshiba, which was okay, and an HP that was very disappointing despite having much more RAM. I even returned the HP and bought this instead. The sound and graphics are also good- nothing amazing, but more than adequate for running Photoshop and watching movies. Good keyboard, no mushy keys or double typing. TMy only surprise on this is that the i5 is not noticeably faster than my i3. I suppose you have to upgrade to the i7 to really see a difference. However, the cpu stays cool. I haven't yet seen it get overloaded, which might be attributable to the i5.. I plan to stick with Acer laptops for any future purchases.

Currently the best by for the money.

For an inexpensive laptop with decent hardware this is a good buy. I had to replace the slow 5400 rpm 1TB disk with a 256GB SSD (I used an OCZ Vertex 4) in order to get the system response up to what a Core i5 is capable of providing. When I first set this up (I installed my own Win7 Enterprise 64 bit OS and tools) it was quite slow (compared to my Core i7 desktop) on opening web sites with a lot of clutter (like Yahoo - one has to download tons of junk for each page - and I have a very fast 60mbit internet connection). As I expected, this was entirely due to the very slow disk. It has 6GB of RAM which is plenty - adding more would not impact performance unless you were running an app such as a video transcoder that could use a lot of RAM (much more than the usual 2GB limit of many apps). The 17" screen is quite good, and after making a few adjustments (to the Intel HD5000 graphics software) has pretty good color (few laptops or monitor have accurate color depths). I have a screen attached colorimeter calibration system I use to get it adjusted as much as the panel can accommodate. I also use an external (HDMI attached) 28" monitor that is capable of being 94% color accurate (most displays are closer to just 76% after calibration).

BTW - there is a single large bottom panel, so it is a pain to get to the disk or RAM. One must remove 28 (or so) screws, then pop open the case starting at the rear section. Pry open (I used a small flat screwdriver) the side with the DVD next since the case has openings on the left side for many jacks, and has to open up at an angle to clear them (same on reassembly).Read more ›

I've had this computer for a few weeks now and I haven't got any complaints. It's quick, display is nice, everything works very well and Windows 8.1 was actually pretty easy to get familiar with.

Sure there's bloat that needs to be cleaned out, but it's that way no matter what computer brand you go with these days. No point in getting wrapped around the axle over it.

Not to shabby, except the sound.

Pros: Overall great laptop. Display is nice, the "button-style" keyboard takes a little getting used to, but is very comfortable.. lots of realestate on the topside to rest your hands/wrists, and it will run Neverwinter on Medium/High.

Downsides: Win 8.1, but "Classic Shell" fixed that. And some idiot at Acer thought it would be a great idea to put the speakers on the BOTTOM of the unit, so the onboard sound is horrible. Loud, but horrible.

Oh, and it has a single analog audio jack.. a combined input/output thing that will require an adapter if you're using an external mic.

Overall, probably one of the better laptops I've owned.

Not very tough

I loaded Ubuntu into this computer, was not satisfied with not being able to load ALL Windows Programs into it, so decided to reload Windows 8.1 back into it. In the process, the USB 2.0 ports went down and stopped working altogether. Regardless of reloading 8.1 again into it, downloading all the necessary drivers, the USB 2.0 would not work. I bought this computer only 2 months ago, and you'd think that the hardware would last a little longer than that. One month past the return date, soooooooo, I'm stuck with it.

I don't often give only one star. After many years, this might be only the second time.

Works fine. The touch pad works better that the one on my HP, but its still a little flaky sometimes. Also, the touch pad has the left and right switches built in under the pad with out separate sections that you can feel, so it something a little different to get used to. Every thing else seems to be fine.
