Two things up front:

1) Acer will refund part of your purchase price if you mail this computer to them with an unactivated copy of windows 8.1. So, if you are planning on using this computer with linux, it's actual price is closer to 200 USD (!!). You must do all this in the USA prior to using it to get the rebate. Look up Acer Windows Refund Program. It's part of why I like Acer.

2) 2GB of RAM is basically inadequate for running windows the 8.1 which comes bundled. I have a copy of 8.1 which I need to dual boot for running some specific software. No matter how I tweaked it, or what I removed, it stayed slow. Chrome for example was often taking 10-15 seconds to start up. Yes, it just dragged. For this alone, I'm taking off one star. I believe I could have improved the speed by switching the swap space to a fast SD card instead of constantly swapping huge amounts to a 5400RPM spinner. But why not ship a PC with 4GB of RAM if the end user is intended to use the pre-installed majorly bloated Windows 8.1? It's kind of insane.

Had I not known any better and stuck with 2GB of RAM on this computer, I would have judged him worse than the core II Duo circa 2009 which he is replacing.

All that said, I really like this box for the money I paid for it. Running newest version of Ubuntu in a dual screen setup, it's great right out of the gate. The CPU is not disappointing at all. Quad Cores. Stands shoulder to shoulder with newer i3s and often beats older i5s (in synthetic benchmarks). Got a playable 35+FPS in PS2 emulation (which is notoriously processor intense). N64 Emu sits around 60FPS. For all the utility stuff, watching movies, skype, writing, etc, it's fast.

I mainly use it for traveling between teaching at different colleges or anything that I need a small laptop, e.g. meetings and seminars. I wiped out all the bloatware and put a SSD (Samsung Evo 850 500 GB SSD) and 8gb of RAM (Kingston HyperX Impact Black 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L) in it and it runs flawlessly now. Before that it ran well but was a little slow and jumpy and would freeze on occasion. Keep in mind that I was coming from an i7 1TB SSD with 16 of RAM and that was what I was comparing it to and used to. I highly recommend it for travel, surfing the web, watching movies or basic word processioning after removing the bloatware. With the upgrades it can handle about 8-10 windows (low power windows, e.g. email, word, most websites) or 3-5 windows (high power windows, e.g. Corel Draw X3, RStudio, and Reddit with enhancement suites) open and doing things before it starts to slow down. All in all, I love it and it works great as part of my mobile workstation.

Accessories I use with it as part of my mobile workstation.

I started with a 10.1 inch tablet PC running Windows 8.1 as my only Windows machine ( my desktop is Linux ). I decided that I really like Windows 8.1, once I got used to it, and I have a handful of Windows programs that I need to use. On the one hand, the tablet PC is short on resources and cannot be upgraded. On the other hand, I really like the small size. But after reading reviews here and elsewhere on the Web, I decided that this machine is a good choice. As posted here by another reviewer, adding more memory and an SSD can really enhance performance. I replaced the 2gb memory card with an 8gb memory card, and as soon as my SSD adapter arrives, I will replace the SATA HD, although I am not finding that the 250gb hard drive to be that much of a bottle neck. I find the machine easy to take apart and add the upgrades. Changing RAM is a little more involved but not bad. Just be careful with unplugging the ribbon flex cables. The Intel N3540 quad core processor is excellent, the graphics hardware is good, and I very much like the anti-glare screen. The machine is very light weight and easily fits into my brief case. By the way, Windows 8.1 drives very easily with a mouse. So if you are looking for a small footprint laptop but need big machine capacity and performance, then this is a good choice.

Update: Installed a Samsung 256gb SSD - time from pressing power button to seeing desktop is 5 seconds! Other benefits of using SSD - less heat, less power consumption, less weight. I am getting 5 to 6 hours constant use from the battery!

As of March '14 this netbook seems to be the best one under $300 that allows for a hard drive upgrade, mainly because it is sporting a fairly new processor that significantly beats most of the current netbooks out there (at least in synthetic benchmarks). Upgradable drive is important if you want to install an SSD, which I highly recommend doing, because an SSD is way faster than the eMMC solid state storage most netbooks are coming with.

As far as the rest of the netbook, it has a cheap screen that is very picky about the angle in which you look at it, which is typical of netbooks so no stars taken away. That being said, the colors are vibrant when looking at it straight on. 1366 x 768 is a sweet spot for an 11" screen, allowing for enough screen real-estate without making the text too small. The touchpad works very well, although the texture is different from what we are use to (phones and tablets), less smooth feeling. The touchpad has a nice mechanical click, as well as a response soft-click when you tap lightly. Sound definitely gets loud enough, which was a huge issue with my old netbook. The fanless design is nice, but I have yet to run any benchmarks and monitor the cpu temperature, so I'll update the review if I run into stability issues. Comes with bloatware, so I reinstalled windows using my own license.

Overall, a straightforward choice if you want a cheap netbook that allows for an SSD upgrade.
