Good for everyday school or home use, but not a power machine.

When reviewing something like this, there's a temptation for me to forget what this laptop's mission in life actually is. And it's important to remember what it's intended to do, because to do otherwise would be unfair.

So let's get the disclaimers out of the way first. This is NOT a gaming laptop. This is NOT something you'd use to develop applications. It's NOT built for photo or video editing, and certainly NOT going to make short work out of pushing boatloads of data around. However, this laptop never claimed to do any of those things, and so far I'm good with it.

No, make no mistake - this is a <$500 laptop that is made to do some low impact things cheaply and efficiently. For example, if all you're looking to do is write a letter, you really don't need an NVidia 880M GPU. If you just want to stream Netflix, you don't need an optical drive. And so on. In other words, this is an inexpensive laptop that is made for situations where anything more would be a waste.

That isn't to say this machine is a slouch. No, it actually performs quite well for these mundane tasks. The Celeron (N2840) it has is quick enough to run Windows 8.1 quite well, despite the N2840 being a midrange offering. It features 802.11n connectivity, which enables speedy network connectivity (if you have a fast internet connection, say >50mpbs, you'll see the difference). The screen is bright enough and is clear from different angles, which is a surprise on a machine at this price point.

And the proof is in the pudding. Office 365 Home installed from scratch in about 15 minutes, and the machine runs Word and Excel pretty nicely. Streaming also works quite well, with no hiccups or lags that I could see. So for everyday use scenarios, this is a valid option.Read more ›

Great little machine.... This is the Bomb!!!

This is the Bomb!!! What a great little machine. I ordered this when my Costco HP Envy I7 machine developed problems (the main keyboard stopped operating) and it became evident that although the machine was under warranty by Costco Repair, Concierge Service could not diagnose the problem nor would they allow me to return the machine for inspection until I completed an arduous several hour series of fixes via telephone lasting over 4 days and costing me $65 to purchase a set of reset disks, from HP, which Costco required but only succeeded in wiping out my files. Some Costco Warranty???? Long story short, I decided I was not going to be investing big dollars in the future on machines which clearly were more than I needed in the first place. So I purchased this little gem. Although I was a bit nervous that it might not be powerful enough for my basic needs, all of my fears were in vain. This guy works like a champ. Downloads appear every bit as fast as the I7. Utube videos no problem. I downloaded and am running Microsoft Office, Quicken 2014, and File Master applications with little if any appreciable loss in speed. While it may not be suitable for gamers, it is perfect for the normal everyday user. Now to the good part. Seeing how distraught I was arguing with Costco. my wife went on the internet chat groups and found the problem. Apparently the sticky key menu had somehow engaged, possibly by depressing the shift key for several seconds, This can shut off the main keyboard. Following her advice, I went into the windows menu, unchecked all the sticky key options and hooray - all is well in paradise. However, I am so pleased with the Acer that I am keeping it as my go too machine........ Besides, I now have an in-house computer expert on call!!!!!

Budget range laptop

First of all, the Amazon description says the laptop is "512-C323".
I received a laptop that says "512-C88M", both on the box and on the laptop itself.
So, somebody needs to explain this discrepancy.

Secondly, this laptop is budget range, so you get what you pay for, so it has some problems:

- LED backlighting is weak. Screen is too bright. Colors are washed out. Adjusting brightness does not help. This is a major annoyance.
- Wireless adapter card is not dual-band (2.4GHz only).
- Laptop has webcam, but has no webcam software installed to use it.
- Webcam is not HD (VGA quality only).

It also has MacAfee installed, which slows down everything, including Windows updates.
Just remove this extra baggage to speed up your laptop considerably.

Also forgot one last important point. The laptop comes pre-installed with Windows 8.1.
The laptop comes with no installation CDs or anything else. Nothing. So, you have absolutely no way
of re-installing your operating system if something happens. And there's no CDROM drive either,
so that is another obstacle if you need to re-install or re-format your HDD.

I have the previous version (cheaper C88M version) http://amzn.to/1HjpWuN and saw this one and thought i might upgrade. But this is simply the SAME cheaper version rebranded. Same chipset, processor, bluetooth and wifi capable. I see no reason not to get the previous version over this one. http://amzn.to/1HjpWuN

Astonishingly good quality for the price. I own two Acer laptops for my business and am sold on their quality. The Acer Aspire is really fast and does all of the functions I need for business (I do training and need a good laptop for my presentations) and for the internet. It boots up much faster than my 1-year old working desktop (another manufacturer) and the screen is really easily visible. I looked at a lot of different laptops when I was deciding what to buy and this is easily the best bargain for the price I have found
