I have had this laptop for a few days now, here are my first impressions:

Wifi: Reviews of previous versions of this laptop noted poor wifi reception. This was thought to be a combination of the antenna placement and a poor wireless card. The wifi antennas (at least in the older version) are in the base of the unit below the screen, where it is chromed. Usually the wifi antennas are placed at the top corners of the screen to aid in reception and avoid interference from all the other components in the base. The old wireless card was an Atheros 802.11bgn.
The new wireless card in an Intel 802.11ac. I don't know if the antenna placement has changed since I haven't opened up this unit, but I am getting great wifi reception. Perhaps it was just the wifi card, or maybe they changed the antennas too. I think ac uses different antennas.

Processor: The cpu can get very hot if taxed. Running a cpu torture test shot the temp up close to 100°C, which is the maximum operating temperature for this cpu. It's unrealistic to think a desktop class cpu can run all-out in a laptop without some serious heating, but this is still concerning. Turning off the turbo-boost can help. Most games do not use 100% of the cpu all the time, so you might not have any issues. But anyone needing sustained cpu load beware. It will throttle down quite severely if it gets too hot.

GPU: Have not tested extensively but seems to run cool. There will probably be laptops at the same price point with the 970m in a few months, if you can wait.

Screen: Very nice screen, love the matte finish. You lose a bit of brightness viewing off-axis, but the colors are still good. This might be due to the matte finish more then the panel itself.

Keyboard: Not the best, but pleasant to type on.

Acer has got it right, for this price point this laptop packs some powerful hardware into a slim, well thought out design that doesn't scream "G4M3R" at the top of it's lungs. The Aspire V Nitro ditches the turbo power exhaust ports, painted keys, and gaudy branding for a professional design that you wouldn't be embarrassed to bring out in public. Weighing in at just over 5 lbs it is very portable, but don't expect to leave your charger at home. The battery life is around 3 hours with brightness turned up while browsing the web, and about 1 hour battery life while playing games. The 5400 rpm hard drive that comes with this model is acceptable, but I added a Samsung 850 Evo SSD and now this laptop is amazingly fast. I'd recommend doing the same and adding a solid state drive to the laptop yourself rather than pay a premium with some of the upgraded models. After years of "building" my own custom desktops I can finally say this laptop is good enough to be a desktop replacement, and that's exactly what I'm using it for.

This computer is not bad, but here is my personal notes on it:

- Pros -
- Great performance 10/10
- Awesome Sound system 10/10
- Looks nice 9/10
- Great Graphics all around 10/10
- Lit keyboard (Red) 10/10

- Cons -
- Fingerprint magnet
- Overheats if hooked up to a T.V. through HDMI while playing a demanding game like Skyrim.
- Sort of heavy, but its to be expected for all the awesome stuff it has

I've used it for a lot of stuff like games, movies, streaming, etc. for over a week now, and despite all the personal cons. I still don't regret buying it, this laptop its worth all the money.

I have built gaming desktops since the early 90's, and always had hand me down laptops that never do what I need them to do. In fact, I hated them all, even the cheap new win8 one my boss got me for work. I really hated windows 8. Now that has all changed almost overnight.

1. I did my due diligence and spent an entire afternoon getting rid of bloatware, updating every single driver, doing windows update, and testing functionality. I still hate win8, so I installed classic shell, and spent about an hour paying close attention to how I want to see my files. .

2. This machine is AWESOME. It a solid performer and multitasker. Now with all the power this thing has at my disposal, and I have a GUI that I can navigate, this system is superior to even my 2500 dollar desktop monster in many ways. Finally a laptop that that works for me.

pros: I love the look of the cover, I love having a high quality panel. This laptop is capable of all my needs: Photography editing, printing, excellent color management. I am happy with its response playing video for sure. The audio is the best I have heard from a laptop outside of the 1500 -2000 dollar range. The headphone jack is true, the power options work well. Did I mentions the screen is outstanding? Networking setup was a snap, I am immediately connected to wireless AC at almost 900mbps. I mapped my network drives easily. Programs installed and operate quickly and without errors or hassle.

cons: I understand that upgrading the drives, battery, and especially the RAM requires removing the top and several ribbon cables. I hear that sometimes parts of the keyboard will stop working after surgery.
