Extremely Versitile, A Great Bargain If The Specs Meet Your Needs!

At under $300, you are getting a whole lot of bang for the buck. I was able to get the 64GB version of this from Acer's website for around the same $279 mark a few weeks ago. Combine a 32GB MicroSD card that I had lying around and with 100GB of storage, that's plenty for my needs as this is just my on-the-go PC. If you want the extra ooohhh-la-la or a Surface Pro or the Retina screen of a MacBook, pay the extra money! For me, this is all I need.

Just completed my upgrade to Windows 10 which makes this laptop even more useful. I'll try to critique some of the areas that I was interested in:

Screen: Looks really, really nice. Does get a bit washed out in sunlight, but still readable for me. Plenty of glare at times, but not a deal-breaker. Screen resolution is not super-HD, nor do I need that on a 10" laptop.
Speakers: Fairly cheap sounding but get the job done. I connect a Bluetooth speaker easily if I want better sound.
Keyboard: Being an owner of a Dell Mini 9 a few years back, the keyboard completely ruined the experience. This keyboard is a bit smaller than normal, but not enough to get annoying during light use.
Track-pad: Works very well for a budget machine.
Power: Uses a standard Micro USB cable. Hurray for no proprietary adapter!
Weight: Just hefty enough to know it's there. Has a substantial, but quality feel.
Case Material: Has a pretty cool plastic casing that shows no scratches or smudges. After throwing in my bag multiple times, I've noticed no wear.
Processor/Memory: Typical slower Atom processor w/2GB or RAM. Not a speedster, but accomplishes my daily tasks well (watching video, browsing web).Read more ›

The Secret

This arrived yesterday, and worked fine until this afternoon. Now it will not start. No go. I have read the manual and performed all the recommended maneuvers. Nada. Called Customer Service for a pre-screening. He gave me the "Secret" number to call. It's been busy for hours. Recording says I should either call back later or leave a message with info so they can call me back when they get around to it - but then proceeds to hang up on me.
Repeat.
Repeat.
Repeat.
Etc.
Stay tuned ...
...on day four, I was able to talk to a real person.
Problem solved
I bought this to replace my original Surface Pro, which I dearly love - but their unique charger is the definition of American Corporate planned obsolescence. They were poorly made and require regular replacement. Cheap Chinese equivalents work poorly or not at all. And Microsoft is no longer making OEM chargers for the original Surface Pro, so that people will have to buy an SP 2 or 3. And getting OEM chargers from 3d party venders/speculators was getting spendier all the time.
So I decided to take a chance on this Acer Aspire Switch 10 E SW3-013-1369. And I'm glad I did, once I learned the secret, which is:
If the unit is just sitting there dead, like a brick and will not "go" i.e. boot
HOLD the power button down and count to 40 (in any language and with or without expletives) or until the thing turns on - whichever comes first :D
[Note: He also told me to only charge it until the icon indicates fully charged. Overcharging can cause the problem [which in retrospect may have contributed to the Surface Pro problem?]
Once "on," set up of the Acer was easy - the Microsoft Office and Google Chrome Browser settings populated right on in when summoned..Read more ›

Nicely Done!

I accidentally fried my old Win 98 Acer netbook the other day, so I figured it was time to upgrade. I've been using that sweet little device for years now to update my blog while I'm on the road and I'm a Windows guy, I love my Nexus 10, but it ain't Windows.

I also wanted to use a Win 10 device without blowing away my finely tuned Win 7 Ultimate on my primary box. I should also note here that I've used every version of Windows since the beginning. I bought one of the first IBM PC's in the early eighties and I used to write Windows scanner drivers for ZSoft in assembly language back in the early nineties. I have cred...

So, when this sweet little Acer arrived tonight I snapped on the screen, plugged the USB power in, held the power button down for about fifteen seconds and she woke up. I skipped the Microsoft sign in stuff, gave it my WiFi passcode and Windows 8 booted.

The option to upgrade to Windows 10 came right up and I accepted. While it downloaded I forced myself to deal with Win 8 long enough to hook up a Bluetooth mouse and uninstall McAfee. I have to say, the upgrade process is an arduous one, be prepared to devote an evening to it.

I finally accepted the default Win 10 apps and everything came alive! Ok, this is the sexiest windows install I've ever seen! Nicely done Acer and Microsoft. Excuse me while I go play...

Plain and simple, I love this thing. It's perfect for my needs and I love the aqua color. I get compliments on this everytime I pull it out of my purse. Yes it fits in my large purse. It was fun to unbox and easy to set up. Soooo glad I got this and not a regular laptop. I love touch screens! And yay for the surface of the screen, it's gorilla glass. Easily set up on my counter while I'm cooking. I highly recommend this. Keyboard is a little tight but it didn't take long to get used to it. All in all a fine product and I am super happy!!
