Portable on a budget!

I purchased this 2n1 a few weeks ago because I needed something more portable than my aging laptop. It initially was much smaller than I expected. I'm just now reviewing this as I wanted to get some hours on the machine first.

First off, the packaging is clean and well thought out. The tablet is the first thing out of the box, wrapped in plastic. After that there is a cardboard flap that pulls out to reveal the keyboard attachment. It is wrapped in a synthetic clothe. Finally, the charger and Office activation pamphlet are under the keyboard, accessed by pulling out the cardboard under the keyboard. In other words, this thing comes tightly packaged in a nice small box.

Setup was quick and easy. It doesn't come with a whole lot of bloatware (to my surprise). Just Acer pc management programs and their own set of productivity tools. I promptly uninstalled all of the included programs. Acer also includes quite a few browser bookmarks on the desktop.

As for actual usage, this thing will happily run Chrome with a few tabs running, and will actually play light games (and to my own amusement, Minecraft is playable with optifine installed and set up right). This tablet is no monster, but it is definitely no slouch, either.

So far it has been issue free with one exception. Occasionally it would refuse to come out of sleep. It would require a hard reboot and holding the power and down buttons simultaneously to turn off. However, I believe I fixed this issue. Acer released a new BIOS for the Switch and after installing the update I have not had the problem.

If you want something that's small and portable, yet can still function as a laptop and isn't as slow as the dreadful netbooks of the past, this is a strong choice.Read more ›

I just received this laptop (model: sw5-012) and have used it for an hour. Here is my preliminary review. First of all, I have not experienced the stuck Windows key like I did with the older model (sw5-011). If you have read my other review on the older model, you would have known that the older model has problem turning on. I was not the only user who experienced these two major issues. I will have to use this new laptop for the next few days in order to see if it also has any issue with powering on as well as any other issues. I will post an update. For now, let me highlight the major differences in features between the two models

I believed that McAfee might be the cause. After uninstalling it, the laptop feels smooth and is more responsive. I hope my review helps thus far. I plan to post an update in a week or so. I shut down the tablet many times in my test and each time it had no problem turning back on. One issue I have experienced so far is that the Windows Update app seems to stall. Compares Well to the Windows Surface tablet

This tablet/laptop compares very closely and compares very favorably to my 2013 Windows Surface RT. Like the Surface tablet, the Acer Aspire Switch is not at all heavy and is about as thin, although at 10.1 inches it is slightly shorter. The Acer is very responsive to swipes and touches and is very, very quick. The 1.33 GHz Intel Atom is more than enough firepower for this pc. Acer's keyboard is much more like a conventional keyboard in look and feel. The keys are not sticky and had a nice click to them; It is a useful thing to have a tablet which quickly converts to a conventional laptop-like computer. Interestingly the left 'd' on the virtual tablet keyboard seems to stick, meaning it is not always immediately responsive.

Out of the box the Acer Aspire is very simple to start (after ½ hour so so charging time) and very quick to set up logins, timezones, location info, etc. Since I do own the Surface and was setting the new tablet up through my wi-fi the Acer recognized me and asked if I wanted to set it up like my Surface. I agreed and within seconds the new tablet came up to a very friendly looking start page. All the tiles were set in the same order, the color scheme was identical and it all looked very familiar. I quickly set up a new look for the Acer but I was glad to have the option to clone an existing device.

Within minutes I was opening apps, surfing the web and enjoying the heck out of this device. I agree with other reviewers that this is not the newest, greatest, most powerful, sexiest, etc. out there. But it sure is nice and fast and colorful and useful to have around. I think this would make a fine first tablet purchase as well as a very nice secondary device in the house.

Recommended.
