This is a pretty solid laptop for the price, and I'm honestly kind of surprised at that. First off, this is about the cheapest you can get a decent i5 for, and the laptops that offer them at a lower price don't seem to be very good setups. When I ordered the laptop, though, I figured that because it's so cheap that it would feel horribly cheap, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it had a decent feel to it. It's by no means a top-of-the-line construction, but it exceeded my expectations at this price for sure.

As far as performance goes, it's pretty responsive, honestly. As with all laptops, you have to get one designed for what you'll be using it for, and if you need a laptop for school and other relatively light tasks, this is a good choice. It can handle very light gaming, but anything intensive and it will quickly get pretty warm, so I wouldn't stress it too much. It can handle game streaming through Steam, so if you've got a nice desktop, you should look into doing that, because this laptop won't even break a sweat with streaming games to it. Other than that, I did find that replacing the HDD with an SSD was a fantastic choice, and from a cold power-down, it literally only takes 5 seconds to boot. Most people pay $800+ for those sorts of boot times, and if you know what you're doing, you can get it for right about $500. If you do go that route, though, keep in mind that swapping out the hard drive IS a bit of a pain... you remove all of the screws on the back first, then you actually remove the KEYBOARD, not the back...

As for a few minor cons, I would say that the touch pad is a bit annoying to use (but I never really like them anyway), and like all pre-built systems, it comes with its fair share of bloatware. As long as you know what yo're doing, though, you can remove that easily enough. :)

UPDATE 3/1/15: There is one annoying aspect that is so bothersome I felt compelled to edit my review.

The touchpad is NOT CENTERED, but sits to the LEFT (which may help left-handed users?). This is VERY aggravating! I have never had a laptop with this design. I often press the right click instead of left click because it is unnatural to keep your hands so far to the left when typing (the left click is about 4 inches from left edge of the laptop). Having to click off and re-click, often multiple times when I am typing a lot, adds a lot of time to any task while I fix errors, close windows I accidentally activated, retype words I accidentally undid (with the Undo feature at the top when right clicking on gmail) etc. It's natural to center your hands on the laptop, but feels so unnatural to move so far left to click.
I hope they fix this feature in future. Or, if this serves left-handed users well, maybe they can offer different units with touchpads either to the left, centered, or on the right.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

This laptop has great specs for the price. I was looking for a budget laptop for mostly web browing, video streaming, light gaming, but with at least an i5 so I can run Sony Vegas Movie Studio 11 on occasion for some light video editing. (My old laptop was an i3 and I was able to do some video editing, but this is a step up). This fit my needs perfectly. I wasn't crazy about how it looked in the pictures, but once I saw it in person I was surprised how elegant it looks with the smooth surface and clean lines. I prefer mouse touchpads with separate buttons for the left & right click instead of one big square as with this one, but I knew what it was before I bought it so I'm okay with it.

When I decided to buy a laptop I did a lot of research. I wanted a laptop that I could do some development and light gaming on for as low a price as possible. Most laptops under $500 sport i3 processors and I was pleased to find this one that has a faster i5 so I took the plunge.

I really, really like this laptop. The keys are nice and big, are laid out just like a desktop keyboard and it has a complete number pad (important for a programmer). The 15.6" screen is also big, very clear and easy to see. The processor is nice and peppy and four gigs of RAM help a lot. The bluetooth and wireless adapters work well. A charge will last about 6-8 hours unless you're gaming and the laptop charges in about an hour. It runs World of Warcraft on medium settings fine, but Skyrim only runs on the lowest settings, which doesn't surprise me. This isn't a gaming laptop.

Now for the downsides. The case is plastic and feels far less solid and durable than a metal one would. The resolution of the screen is actually fairly low (1366x768). And (and this is the strangest thing) there are no indicators anywhere for NumLock and CapsLock, so there's no way to know if they're on without typing something. This particular laptop has no optical drive, though that isn't a problem for me.

(Warning - deep geekery ahead!) The laptop cannot boot from a USB drive in UEFI mode, meaning that if you want to install another operating system, you'll have to switch to legacy mode and lose the advantages of UEFI. Not that big a deal, though it is a bit galling that Acer would lock down the laptop like that.

Also, the laptop is very difficult to upgrade.
