As a college student suffering with a six year old Emachines laptop, I really, REALLY needed to upgrade. I was going to get the version of this laptop without a touchscreen, but after a month of waiting it still hadn't shipped. So I splurged and went with this one. It was a pretty good decision.

What I was looking for: an all around laptop for gaming and typical student things (internet, MS Office, Netflix, etc), semiportable when necessary (why a desktop was not an option for me).

Pros:
most importantly, yes, you can play video games on this. I'm a fairly avid gamer. Transistor works like a dream. Skyrim runs pretty well; I haven't racked up enough hours on it yet to really give an estimate. Civ V runs awesome, no noticeable lag, not sure if having mods would bog it down. Goat Simulator is similarly fast. edit six months later: I blazed my way through all three Mass Effects on this and they ran great, although it does get the machine pretty hot.
It boots up so fast I might cry. Less than 30 seconds. This could just be because my old laptop took 1-5 minutes to boot up.
Terabyte hard drive is amazing. I could probably fit my whole Steam library on here.
The touchscreen is nifty. I spend a lot of time on mobile, and I've used Windows phones before, so switching to 8.1 wasn't that big of a deal. I'm sure it would be much more obnoxious without a touchscreen, though. It is absolutely designed for that. I can also play Halo: Spartan Assault with my touchscreen and it's so much fun. Screen is decently sturdy, I wouldn't suggest punching it or abusing it though.

A Great Machine, (Overlooking the Missing Optical Drive)

I've had several Acer devices and have been pleased with all of them. When I wanted to upgrade my previous Acer, (a machine that has been donated still in wonderful condition,) I wanted a touchscreen, 8GB, i5, with a 6 cell battery. For the price, this is a fantastic machine that hits all marks and does it well.

However, the not-included optical drive is incredibly lame; it has a bay for it and ships with a baffle. So, Acer, either ship with the drive or make this thing half as thin. At the very least, have a ridiculously low-priced drive available to anyone that purchases this model.

If you don't need an optical drive, this is a great machine. Even if you drop the $50-80 for a new after market drive, this is still a good machine. Personally, I think I will go with a second hard drive. I have the space, might as well use it.

This laptop is great. I use it for college, I'm an IT major and so far this laptop has over exceeded my expectations. Its very quite, almost silent. Very fast! Because of school I have multiple Windows open and multiple programs running (like Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel and the web) and the Acer doesn't miss a beat. The touch screen is awesome, if u have a touch screen phone, then using this will be simple.

It works like a charm, is really fast, plus bluetooth and a touchscreen? What more could you ask for? I am reviewing from the computer itself and internet is fantastic. I am not an intel fan but if you want a fast enough and convenient enough computer, this is the one for you.

PS - the bluetooth also connects to phones to retrieve and send calls and texts. Plus you can use the bluetooth fir headphones as well

Excellent computer, unbeatable value. I love Acer products because they are quality and well priced. I wanted to upgrade to a touch screen with at least 8gb of RAM. I compared models for months, and this one eliminated all of the competition based on specifications and tremendous value. One thing I would tweak slightly, however, would be the mouse touch pad, which sometimes has difficulty registering the difference between a right or a left click. To be fair I had the same problem on a few Asus models I tested, as well. The touchscreen works fantastically, however -- never any trouble localizing where I am clicking. Using a touchscreen pc is readily adaptable and feels intuitive immediately.

Good laptop overall

The computer is good. I am having issues with the keys - sticky which makes typing accurate a bit challenging. Since I don't use it for daily work, it's been ok - just need to watch what I type and press a bit harder. Of course it can just be the machine I got and not all of them but it's the one thing I don't like.

Overall it is a good laptop for the price. Looks more expensive than it is. The display quality could be better. Brightness is uneven and colors look washed out. Colors and brightness can be adjusted but there is no way to adjust contrast. Keyboard is not backlit.

Bloatware. Bloatware everywhere!

In short, I purchased the laptop because it was cheap and so I can play World of Warcraft (WoW) with my friends when I'm not home. I don't use it often, though it comes in handy when my friends and I are going to have a LAN party or when I stop by at my friend's house on the way back from work. It's not the best laptop in the world, but it holds it together alright while playing WoW.

I've done my homework and this laptop should be able to run WoW with some hiccups to be expected. The specifications of the laptop is slightly better than the bare essentials required listed on Blizzard's website. Though I wasn't expecting the best experience ever, I wasn't expecting it to be such a poor experience either. Then I read about bloatware...

The laptop is bogged down with tons of bloatware, which in turn slows down the overall performance of the laptop. I tried deleting some, but I have no idea what is and isn't important and the Should I Remove It website didn't have enough information on the software to help me decide what should stay and what should go.

What I plan to do, to save me time and headache, is restore the laptop to Windows 7, which will remove all the bloatware Acer filled the hard drive with. I don't expect my experience to improve a lot, but just enough where I don't experience as much lag while playing WoW.

As a side note to gamers looking for an inexpensive laptop, do keep in mind WoW is a pretty graphic intensive game and requires a lot to run smoothly. If this laptop can run WoW the way it does in its present state, then I have no doubt it can handle other not-so-graphic-intensive games like Diablo, Counter Strike, Warcraft or Starcraft, and games like The Sims.
