Product Description

Pure invention. We designed the new MacBook to be not only thinner and lighter, but more functional and intuitive than ever before. To do that, we couldn't just shave a millimeter here, a gram there. So we started from scratch, reinventing each essential element as part of a singular, deceptively simple design. It's everything there is to love about Mac. In its purest form ever. A keyboard reimagined from A to Z. From the beginning, our goal was to design a full, uncompromising Mac experience. And a full-size keyboard is an essential part of that. In order to fit a full-size keyboard in the incredibly thin MacBook, we designed the keyboard from the ground up. Each component has been rethought specifically for the new MacBook, from the underlying mechanism to the curvature of the surface of each key to the distinctive new typeface. The result is a keyboard dramatically thinner than its predecessor. Now when your finger strikes the key, it goes down and bounces back with a crisp, consistent motion that makes typing with precision a breeze. Butterfly mechanism. Traditional keyboards use a scissor mechanism, which tends to wobble around the edges. This creates a lack of precision when you strike anywhere except the center of the key. We needed to reduce key wobbling for a keyboard this thin; otherwise, striking a key off-center could result in the keycap hitting bottom before a keystroke registers. So we designed an entirely new butterfly mechanism.

Not since the tech press slammed the original iPad ("Who need this?" "Nothing but a big iPod Touch!") have I seen such a wrong-headed rush to criticize a new Apple product. It's like watching a lunatic mob roam the village at night with torches and pitchforks, shouting: "Kill the beast!" And here's what's so bizarre about the criticism: the Macbook Air has always been compromised compared to the Macbook Pro. Worse screen, fewer ports, less available memory, slower processors. But everyone understands that these are the trade-offs if you want a thinner, lighter laptop. Now the new Macbook 12' takes thin and light to a whole new level, with a much better screen, while the main compromises vs. the Air are the reduction to one port and a slower processor... and the press has reacted like Apple shot someone's dog.

This review will take you through the major critiques of the new Macbook, tell you the truth about them, and help you decide if there's really any issue FOR YOU. But let's start here: the new 12" Macbook is one of the best pieces of design work to ever come from Apple, and that's saying a lot. It's certainly their sexiest and most gorgeous laptop ever, and I've been using Apple laptops since the Powerbook 170. It makes my 13" Macbook Air seem clunky by comparison, something I never would have thought was possible. And the screen is absolutely stunning.

Criticism #1: "It's just a low end laptop for consumers." Not true, not even close. If you're a video or photo editing professional, a hard core gamer or someone who plugs in multiple peripherals regularly--then you'll want either a Macbook Pro or possibly an Air. The price you'll pay will be size, weight and dollars in the case of the Pro.

Size: 256 GBColor: Silver Verified Purchase
Please note that this is the smallest Apple laptop to date and there are a few things that a buyer should consider, before purchasing this MacBook, vs. a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. I'm completely satisfied with my purchase. I got the Space Grey color and it looks amazing. Upgrading from a MacBook Air, the size and weight difference felt like my previous transition from MacBook Pro to MacBook Air. Portability is my primary concern. I do all of my CPU-intensive video edits on my iMac with Retina 5K Display. I use the MacBook as my secondary field computer. It's is awesome for that purpose for many reasons:

#1 Small size and weight for travel
#2 Can recharge via USB-C. This mean using USB battery banks, USB solar chargers, etc. to recharge off-the-grid is possible! There is no longer a need to duck in corners of airports, etc. to try to find a power outlet
#3 Retina display. This is a huge visual upgrade from my MacBook Air that did not have Retina display.
#4 Three laptop color options to choose from
#5 Improved touch pad and keyboard lighting
#6 Great battery life but not quite as long as MacBook Air. However, the ability to recharge via USB makes the MacBook superior IMO.
#7 USB-C to USB 3.0 converters can be inexpensively purchased to enable use of older USB 3.0 devices. Also USB-C charging cables are cheap, so there is no need to feel tethered to Apple proprietary charging/synch cables like the iPad/iPhone/iPod use.

For a casual user browsing the web, checking e-mail and editing photos this would be a perfect computer. It's also suitable for someone like myself that performs Final Cut Pro X field video edits. I can even edit 4K video with it!

This review is for the Macbook 12 1.1 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core M processor, 256GB HD in gold. I won’t lie. When I first saw the specs for the Macbook 12” I was disappointed. But I was in need of a lightweight laptop, and the gold one looked so appealing that I decided to give it a try. After using it for about 2 weeks, I think it’s a great product if you are looking for a laptop that doesn’t need to do any processor intensive tasks with a great battery life. Some thoughts on my experience thus far.

Reasons for choosing the Macbook 12 over other laptops

For the price that Apple is charging, this isn’t the thinnest laptop on the market (Asus ZenBook UX305 is thinner), nor does it have the best display (Dell XPS 13 has more pixels). It isn’t even the lightest laptop that is currently available (that goes to Lenovo’s LaVie Z). The reason I chose the Macbook 12 over the competitors was because of the portability. Both the Dell XPS 13 and the Asus ZenBook boast battery life that is close to the Macbook but they are both heavier by .8 lbs and .64 lbs respectively. It’s not much but for me, I wanted something that was the lightest. I could’ve waited for the Lenovo which weighs 1.87 lbs but sorry, I think the laptop looks horrible and it is thicker than the Macbook 12.

I could’ve gone for the new Macbook Air since it has a longer battery life, faster processor and is relatively light but I wanted the retina display, and I hate the loud clicking trackpad.

User Experience

Portability: This laptop is very portable- light, long-lasting battery. My main laptop is a Macbook Pro, and I hate to carry it around unless I absolutely have to.
