Great for Producing Videos

I bought this laptop for the specific purpose of producing videos using Sony Vegas. I somewhat worried that I wasn't buying the top of the line Asus gaming compter. Well, guess what? This laptop works perfectly. Also, it's not a 17 inch which means it can fit into a Pelican backpack hardcase.

I love the feel of the keyboard. I'm not a gamer and don't use the illuminated keys but the feature is there if I need it. Also love the touchscreen feature. Once again, I don't really use it that often, but it's there if I need it, which sometimes is the case.

Picked up a 1TB Toshiba external drive at WalMart and that gives me all the extra storage I need.

I'm currently producing an hour and a half video for YouTube and everything is going very smoothly. This laptop eats Sony Vegas for breakfast.

If you read any negative reviews about this laptop, just ignore them and realize that some people seemingly live for the express purpose of being negative.

Also: contrary to what some reviewers say, the sound is plenty loud. (Of course, I don't expect my laptop to function as a boom box - don't know what those other reviewers are thinking). Truthfully, I had to unplug the subwoofer because I'm writing this to you in a motel and the subwoofer would vibrate the wall and disturb people in the next room.

What I've learned from experimentation is that you have to be careful about what antivirus you install. I replaced the gratuitous McAfee temporary subscription software with Avira and suddenly my laptop started hanging. I also tried out Comodo and finally settled on using Bitdefender.

As for the firewall, do your research and you'll find out that the new Windows 8 firewall works just fine.Read more ›

Watch out for that right-edge swipe!

I bought this Windows laptop after getting incredibly frustrated with my Macbook Pro and its horrible window manager, which obviously was not built with multitasking in mind. (I really gave conversion a shot, but I guess I'm just not meant to be a fan boy.) It was so nice to be back in Windows land once again. However, I will admit, I'm still not sure if I like Windows 8.1 as much as I did Windows 7. It feels like Microsoft is trying to turn my computer into a phone. Time will tell if I can actually adapt to this new paradigm.

I've been using this laptop for a little over a month now, and so far I'm still glad I bought it. Here are some points you might find useful:

* Out of the box, the system boots in just a few seconds (that is, after the initial boot and setup). Seriously, it's super-fast. Of course, your experience may differ, depending on what you choose to install.

* Initially, the sound wasn't as impressive as I had been led to believe it would be, and I was a little disappointed. But then I discovered I could tweak some settings, and my opinion was completely reversed. I can now honestly say that I've never heard better sound from any laptop, and my wife agrees. Believe it or not, we used this laptop, its built-in speakers, and the supplied external subwoofer to provide the music at our very modest New Year's Eve party. It performed wonderfully.

* At first, I didn't think I'd care much about the touchscreen, but once I had it, I was surprised at how much I started using it. When the touch targets (i.e.Read more ›

Screen failed after 2 hours

A couple hours after I first plugged it in the screen suddenly died and went blank. Moving it, the screen would sputter and flash bright white. Closing it and opening it the screen sometimes would come on for a few seconds and then go blank again, most of the time it wouldn't do anything other than flash bright white if moved. Based on the other reviews here the screen failure seems to be a common problem. I wasn't able to check whether it had other hardware problems as well as some have noted. Returning to Amazon. I love the features but I'm concerned if I order another that it will have hardware issues as well; or develop issues after the 30 day return expires.

Computer arrived next day, one day earlier than promised. So that was definitely a good start. I have now had this computer for one week, so I will update this review later if needed.

Everything about this computer so far is stunning. Certainly the nicest laptop I have ever owned. The screen is fantastic and the speed this system operates at amazes me every time I use it. Shut down and start up times are below 5 seconds, something I still have to get used to (in the positive sense of course). Reading other comments about the HDD version, it was clear to me that I would invest the extra $250 in the SDD version. I cannot speak for the HDD system, but seeing how fast this SDD runs, I can only imagine how this technology will soon become the new standard.

I have read reviews that complained about the optical drive being slightly misaligned. I can confirm that this is the case with my device too. However, the drive is fully functional and in all honesty, I rarely look at the laptop from the right side, so it really does not bother me that much. I actually question if I will ever use the drive...

Other users complain about Windows 8.1, which really makes no sense given that these individuals knew well in advance what operating system their device would run on. I have been an XP advocate for many years and have had little issues finding my way in the new system. Sure, you will not necessarily find what you are looking for on your first try, but let's face it... you won't mind spending time on this beautiful laptop. Less than one week and I feel extremely comfortable with Windows 8.1.

No issues at all with the wireless. The keyboard is very responsive and intuitive. I love everything about it.Read more ›
