After having only used high end laptops for the past few years, I was hesitant on this one. Pleased that performance is very good and with an SSD upgrade, the i3 is more than tolerable.

The screen is large enough to actually get some work done, but the viewing angles are terrible. What was a nice surprise was seeing how crisp the screen was, can't really see individual pixels unless you really try and having the GUI larger due to scaling is actually a lot easier to use.

Never liked 8.1, but with touch, it's not bad for some things. While you'll rarely use this as a tablet due to it's weight, it's nice to have.

For around $400 (Thank you Black Friday), I couldn't be happier considering I paid $400 for a Nexus 10 not too long ago. My old laptop was 14lbs (desktop replacement) and a pain to travel with, this one is relatively light and much easier to deal with, even the "brick" is small and light.

The worst problem is very low audio, luckily the media players (Media Player Classic) and VLC let you boost the audio, so everything but an occasional Youtube video is OK, but it really is just too weak.

I looked at a lot of laptops/convertibles and this had the best bang for the buck, the next real step up puts you close to $1000 and unless you're a gamer with eagle eyes, you won't miss the extra HP much.

UPDATE: Aug 22 2015 - Recently upgraded to a larger SSD and decided to do a fresh install of W10. This took a bit of research to adjust bios settings to finally accept the USB thumb to boot and the W8 license did not transfer for me. W10 is noticeably faster that 8 and is all the better without the crapware. All hardware drivers were present except the card reader which mounting an old 8.1 Macrium reflect image and pointing w10 to that directory to search for the driver succeeded. If you don't mind the privacy issues of w10, it's a nice upgrade for this machine

I looked for a long time before buying this ASUS Flip book. I was worried about it being too heavy or bulky, but I was very happy when it came--very thin and light. Much better than I expected. The touch screen works great--so happy to have that. It makes windows 8 very enjoyable. The flip feature is cool, although I am still getting used to the sensitivity of the screen and how it works in that mode. Overall, a very sleek notebook with an excellent keyboard and feel. Sound is pretty good too. I believe for the price, it is an excellent choice for someone looking for a full size laptop that can also function as a tablet. I don't like the tablets that disconnect from their keyboards...this flip book is a better design. Works very well for everyday functions, no hang-ups or problems yet. I will update if I encounter any negative issues, but so far, I LOVE it!

I Love this laptop from Asus. The only brand I will buy because they are made to last without constant problems.
At this time I own 2 other Asus laptops and a Asus T100TA 2 in one. And now this awesome Asus 360 degree
flip that goes into a tablet..

Hopefully this will help you decide if this is the device for you as there are several options out there for 2 in 1 / Convertible laptops. I looked at pretty much all the options and decided on this one since it had 6gb RAM, 500gb disc space, 3.0 USB port, ethernet connection if ever needed & a nice large 15" screen plus a decent price at under $400. However, here is the bad news...I received this device yesterday(1/24/15) Saturday afternoon and spent several ours using it. In that limited amount of time three things happened, (1) the WiFi disconnected a hand full of times and the only option was to to a hard reboot to get it to reconnect. Very annoying if you are in the middle of something, (2) the touchscreen would lock up or nor fully function and again I found the only way to fix this was a hard reboot. I had to do this hand full of times as well, & (3) converting this to full tablet mode by folding the laptop in half was suppose to disable the keyboard and touch pad, well it didn't. Any movement on my lap or if holding it with my other had underneath would press the keys or move the cursor. I could not figure out how to fix this one. Yes I could have started over and reloaded Windows to see if that did anything but I thought a brand new device only having for 6hrs should not have all these issues. I wonder what more could go wrong in a week.

The Asus TP500LA-EB31T I received has problems with the Mediatek MT7630E 802.11bgn Wi-Fi adapter that comes with. It constantly disconnects from the Wi-Fi network and while connected the download speed is very low (dial-up like). I returned the first one and tried my luck with the same model but the replacement had same hardware and displayed same symptoms as the first one so I got a refund. (FYI Tested about 15 feet from my Wi-Fi router using WPA2, 2.4 & 5GHz. I do have other 8 devices working properly on my Wi-Fi - Android Phone, Windows Phone, iPhone, Win XP, 7 & 8 Laptops and 2 iPads).
...the design and built is nice though so I'm sorry it did not work.

First - I'm a big fan of ASUS (and have another ASUS laptop that I'm using to write this review). That's why I wanted to try a flip, and purchased an ASUS from Amazon....
When the computer worked properly, I liked it (a lot).... Unfortunately it had problems on day 1 after 1st start-up. It had intermittent operating problems (2 navigation arrows on screen at same time, intermittently scrolled thru various windows for no reasons, shaking screen displays, etc. - all intermittently). It would do this for short periods of time, and work fine at other times?
Also (and I'm very surprised at Amazon for how they packaged & shipped this laptop) - the computer was shipped by Amazon, and it was VERY poorly packaged. The computer box was placed inside of a larger box (as expected), but with very little added protection (the computer was literally rattling around in the larger box)....
I want to give the ASUS a 2nd chance, so as a Prime member I'm replacing. I will re-review once the replacement arrives (and I'm hopeful that it will be better packaged by Amazon) - & also noting that I have no idea if the poor packaging contributed to the operating problems...
